[England]: the company, n.d.]. Octavo-sized booklet, stapled in wrappers (18 x 12 cm.), 16 pages. Illustrated with brown and beige header vignettes and illustrations in the text. FIRST EDITION. One of the earliest OXO promotional cookbooks. It contained recipes by household cooks that mailed them to the company as an expression of their satisfaction with OXO cubes. These recipes include OXO Blanc Mange, OXO Devilled Bananas, and OXO Jambon Savory. The OXO beef stock cubes were introduced in 1910 as a cheaper version of the original product. Small stain to front wrapper panel, otherwise fine.

Catalogue of kitchen tools and furniture shown at an exhibit at the Renwick Gallery and The Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Introduction and notes by Mimi Sheraton. This exhibition ran from Sept. 1972 to April 1973, and displayed common and unusual kitchen gadgets from the pre-history to the present time. Very light rubbing to printed cardstock wrappers, otherwise fine.

A response to the impending Beer Act of 1830, from a "Country Brewer". The commercial policy called the Beer Act would open brewing and cider making up to all householders who paid a modest fee, and the existing brewers, all licensed by local magistrates, were pushing back. The argument made within claims that quality will decline, adulteration will proliferate, and the economic impact will be negative. To some extent the Country Brewer must have been correct. Only two weeks after the passage of the act, Sir Sydney Smith uttered his famous line, "The Sovereign people are in a beastly state. Everybody is drunk. Those who are not singing are sprawling." According to the author, the Technical Officer of the International Bee Research Association, the only book dedicated to the history, construction, use and maintenance of the observation hive. With the ownership signature of beekeeper W.S. Petch to the free front endpaper, otherwise fine, in brick-colored cloth, in a black and red printed dust jacket with only a tiny bit of light soiling.

A handsome early collection of the works of Berchoux who is credited with popularizing the word "gastronomy" with the first poem of this collection. Quarter green calf bindings, with gilt titled and decorated spines. Spines darkened, and some rubbing and edgewear to the boards, otherwise very good. Title page printed in black, green, and red. FIRST EDITION, publisher's "overprint" issue, limited to 250 copies printed for patrons and friends of the press; from a total edition of 750. Laid-in is a small printed statement from Press, stating that "Smith College Museum of Art has permitted us to overprint 250 copies of this keepsake... [for] our patrons and... our friends". Text consists of a letter from Browne to Evelyn on the use of plants for crowns and garlands by the ancient Greeks and other cultures, with reference to Philostratus, Theophrastus, Pliny, Pollux, and Athenaeus. Browne divides the crowns and garlands into three categories: gestatory, portatory, pensile or suspensory, and - finally - depository. A list of forty-four plants used as crowns or garlands forms part of the letter. [Baskin 30; Brook 31].

One of the very rare precursors to the famous Old Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide (1935). Following Repeal, Ben-Burk Distillers published the Guide, which was to become one of the iconic cocktail recipe books. Originally published as a promotional item for the Ben-Burk line of spirits distilled in Boston, the Guide became a staple of professional and home bars around the country. But prior to the first work titled Old Mr. Boston Guide, Ben-Burk published One Hundred Cocktails, Some Old -- Some New (1932) and One Hundred and Twenty Cocktails, Fizzes, Punches, Highballs, Toddies and Long Drinks (1934), both of which are very rare. [Boston, Mass: Ben Burk Inc, 1934. Folio, in post & staple-bound folder (31.5 x 24.5 cm.), [28] pages. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. A trade catalogue for the distilled products of Ben Burk Inc., the distillery more famous for their long-running Old Mr. Boston Bartender's Guide. The Guide first appeared with Repeal of Prohibition in 1934, though it was preceded by a number of printings of One Hundred Cocktails, Some Old -- Some New, and One Hundred and Twenty Cocktails, Fizzes, Punches, Highballs, Toddies and Long Drinks (1932 ff.). So this trade catalogue is concurrent with the end of Prohibition and the beginnings of the famous cocktail guide. With promotional descriptions of eight spirits, each with an 'actual size' image of the bottle. Some rubbing and staining to wrappers, with some of the staining reaching the interior. Stiff card wrappers, printed in red, black and silver, and with a de-bossed silver image of Mr. Boston himself. Near very good. Unrecorded. [OCLC locates no copies; not in Noling].

The first volume contains information on woodlands, hedgerows, forestry, the history of planting, and the use of place. The second volume contains a thorough dictionary of trees. Marshall was one of the first professional landscape improvers to write a manual. Internally near fine, pages generally fresh and clean. Bound in full calf, spine gilt with raised bands and red and black labels laid-on. General wear to head and foot of spines, and some cracking to the gutters. A good set.
