[Leiden]: Prostant apud Isaacum Littleburii Bibliopolam Londinensem, 1684. 4to., pp.[iv], 327[i.e. 343], [xxxi]. Title-page in red and black, woodcut initials. Leaf 2V4 is cancelled, p.343 is mispaginated as p.327. With errata leaf. Occasional toning, a few light stains. Sympathetically rebound in dark brown calf, red morocco label to spine, blind tooled fillets to spine and borders, edges sprinkled red. Very good. Small inscription to preliminary blank, neat but (to us) indecipherable, and one marginal note to text. A reissue of the Leiden edition of the same year, sold in England with a new title-page giving the London bookseller's name. Vossius' commentary is described by Dibdin as 'elegant and erudite, though not free from occasional indelicacies of thought and illustration.' He observes that some copies have a title-page reading 'Lug. Bat 1684, 1691' and that whilst the later edition has extra indices, the London one is rarer. ESTC R34796; Dibdin I (4th ed.) 379.

Daventriae [Deventer]: typis Johannis Columbii, 1651; 1652. Two works in one vol. 8vo., pp. [xxvi], 292, [xxviii]; [xxiv], 431, [lxiii]. Printer's device to both title-pages, woodcut initials and decorative headpieces. A few leaves unopened at fore-edge. Occasional small spots (wax?) and smudges, very good. Contemporary vellum, titles inked to spine, fore-edges slightly overlapped, all edges blue. Pencilled booksellers' notes to front pastedown. A few marks to boards, endpapers toned, an approx. 3cm piece cut out of ffep possibly to remove a name, still very good. Two ownership inscriptions to ffep: D. Wyttenbach, dated August 1765, and J.A. Jeremie(?) dated 1863. The former is quite likely to be the classical scholar Daniel Wyttenbach (1746-1820), student of Hemsterhuis, Valckenaer and Ruhnken who, along with them, laid the foundations for modern Greek scholarship. Light water stain to upper blank margin of one gathering, small loss to lower outer blank margin of one leaf, thumb mark to titlepage, ink splash to verso of last blank. Full calf c.1800, tooled in blind, spine gilt-ruled, gilt-lettered label, a.e.r. Joints a bit cracked but firm at head and foot, upper board a bit rubbed. Bookplate of Cholmondeley Library to front pastedown; bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to ffep. An elegantly bound third century dialogue between a Christian (the Octavius of the title) and a pagan. Later green morocco, spine divided by raised bands, lettered in gilt direct, turn-ins gilt, all edges gilt. Title-page loosening, occasional minor spotting. Spine just slightly darkened, a touch of rubbing to head and corners. Armorial bookplate of Tervoe to front pastedown. An attractive printing of the Odes attributed to Anacreon, illustrated somewhat in the fashion of Pine's Horace (although the text is letterpress).

Early prize binding by Bickers & Son of mid-brown calf over thick wooden boards with slightly rounded edges, boards bordered with a double gilt rule and with central armorial prize stamps, spine divided by raised bands, green morocco label, other compartments with central decorative tools and corner circles all gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Some light spotting. Leather lightly marked, spine slightly darkened, a few small surface scrapes.
