, 1954; Two handwritten signed letters from singer/ actor Todd Duncan (1903-1998) addressed to early television director Jerome Shaw. Duncan, the original Porgy in "Porgy and Bess," was Gershwin’s personal choice, singing the role more than 1,800 times. His first operatic performance was in 1945 at the New York City Opera Company as Tonio in Leoncavallo’s "Pagliacci." He taught at Howard University for over fifty years, during which time he continued a rigorous concert performance schedule, logging over 2,000 performances the world over. He was a recipient of the George Peabody Medal, the Donaldson Award, the New York Drama Critic’s Award for "Lost In The Stars," and numerous domestic and foreign honorary awards and degrees. Los Angeles, 1927; Original Leo Cotton pen and ink drawing of Dorothy MacKaye, notorious actress at the center of the scandal that rocked Hollywood in 1927 when her husband, musical comedy star Ray Raymond, was beaten to death by popular actor Paul Kelly, with whom McKaye was involved in a love triangle. While serving time in San Quentin for her part in the crime, MacKaye wrote "Women In Prison," which in 1933 was made into the Warner Bros. film "Ladies They Talk About," starring Barbara Stanwyck and Preston Foster, and again in 1942 as "Lady Gangster," with Faye Emerson and Jackie Gleason. Artist Leo Cotton (1880-1946) was longtime art director of the Los Angeles Examiner where his illustrations for years were a regular feature of the newspaper’s format. , 1927; Original manuscripts of Jed Dooley (1884-1973), vaudeville comedian who before going solo was partnered with his sister Ethel and brother Billy in a trick cycling act billed as "The Three Dooleys." Included are eight hand-typed gag sheets recording recent changes and additions to Dooley’s comedy act, dated June 19 through December 12, 1927, and identified at top as, "Original gags added to my act since my last registration, Nov. 16th, 1926." Each sheet is hand signed by Dooley in numerous places. Also included are two handwritten versions of one of Dooley’s acts which featured standup, cycling, saxophone playing, and rope tricks, all with accompanying patter. The first is a nine-page full-length act from the late twenties, and the other a condensed three-page version labeled "Short Version of Act As Done at Coast-Guard, Feb 22, 1943."
