Senator Elihu Root argues persuasively against exempting American vessels passing through the Panama Canal from paying the tolls charged on other vessels. After much debate, the canal act was amended and, from the official opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, American vessels using the canal were treated the same as those of other nations. Elihu Root was a leader in the fight to keep the United States from granting itself a special advantage in relation to the canal. Robert Hare (1781-1858), an American chemist, was a professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania and was elected an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1824. He invented the calorimeter, the deflagrator, and the oxyhydrogen blowtorch. Late in his life he became a Spiritualist and published Experimental Investigation of the Spirit Manifestations. Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin and grandson of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Dallas, taught engineering at West Point, served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, was a professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1827 to 1843, and served as the first president of Central High School of Philadelphia from 1839 to 1842. In 1843 he became superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, a position he held until his death. This article by Lea was read before the Society on March 16, 1832. Very scarce. Enoch Lewis (1776-1856) was a Pennsylvania Quaker and a mathematician who edited several mathematical works and published several textbooks, including one on spherical projections. He was an abolitionist, establishing the monthly journal African Observer and taking an active role in the Underground Railroad in Chester County, Pa. In this pamphlet he examines another issue of concern to the Society of Friends, that of legal and judicial oaths, which Friends refused to take. Very scarce.
