After much debate, the canal act was amended and, from the official opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, American vessels using the canal were treated the same as those of other nations. Elihu Root was a leader in the fight to keep the United States from granting itself a special advantage in relation to the canal. Enoch Lewis (1776-1856) was a Pennsylvania Quaker and a mathematician who edited several mathematical works and published several textbooks, including one on spherical projections. He was an abolitionist, establishing the monthly journal African Observer and taking an active role in the Underground Railroad in Chester County, Pa. In this pamphlet he examines another issue of concern to the Society of Friends, that of legal and judicial oaths, which Friends refused to take. Very scarce. Marbled endpapers. Contents: Premières Méditations Poétiques. Oval bookplate of former owner on front fixed endpaper: L. C. M. St. Medard. In Good Condition: leather is rubbed, with some loss at corners and ends of spine; front board partially detached; foxing, light except next to plates; otherwise, clean.
