This book is a collection of humorous essays written by a 10-year-old young lady in 1904. After fifty years in a scrapbook, they were copied by by the author's daughter, who then found a publisher, with the book being released in 1962. It went on to spend 66 weeks on the New York Times best seller list. This copy, from 1964, shows little wear for its almost 60 years. The cover shows chips around the edges and a single crease on the spine, which is still square. The page edges are dyed deep red all around and the only marks within is the owner's name and address inside the front cover. This is a fairly rare book.

The only date given is 1911, the date of first publication, but as this is a Modern Library Edition from Random House, I knew that wasn't the date for this volume, as Random House didn't exist in 1911. (Bennet Cerf is on the logo, and he was only 13 in 1911.) Eventually I searched images for other books that looked like this one. The majority indicated 1942, so that is what I went with, although I have no idea where they got that year. In a caution for online book shoppers, one seller was claiming the book as being a 1911 first edition. Do your own research and do not take what the seller says without a little corroboration.

As this is lacking a price, bar code, ISBN and number line, coupled with the book being slightly smaller than the typical hardcover, I am led to believe that this is a book club edition, although no book club is mentioned anywhere. This is the tenth of 25 Richard Jury novels. In this one, Superintendent Jury tries to get away on a little holiday, only to become an eyewitness to a murder most perplexing.

This is the author of The Little Colonel, later made into a movie with Shirley Temple. Many illustrations. Only about half of the dust jacket remains, but the cover is very well preserved. Yellow and tan fabric with print and decoration in green and black. Wear is mild, and the pages are clean, tight and unmarked, other than an inscription on the front free endpaper, shown in the photographs. Originally published in 1897. A rare book.
