Charles Northend was the Principal of the Aborn Street School in Salem Massachusetts.  His essay outlines his reaction to new theories of education that were circulating in the public school system in and around Boston. "But while many are thus prompt in bringing forward, with so much apparent interest, zeal and confidence, new theories, how few are really competent to carry any to successful operation.  Many have yet to learn that theory is one thing and practice quite another.".

Folded, some minor separation at folds, edges folded and chipped, some discoloration from tape at top margin, otherwise good and sound. Old Soldier's Advocate was published from 1858 through Reconstruction when it ceased publication in 1878. As the title suggests its' cause was the enlisted man, the veteran and war widows and orphans. Many of its articles include information about pressuring government to insure pensions and benefits to military families. This issue includes a description of General Fremont's removal from Command by President Lincoln, a synopsis of his address to his troops, reports from the field on Fremont's removal, report about various Union troop movements in the West, the resignation of General Winfield Scott, a column on payments to war widows and heirs, and a military pension report. 1926. 8vo. 200 x 125 mm., [8 x 5 inches].  44 leaves.  Illustrate with chromolithographic color plates representing the costumes of each of the 18 Provinces of Italy, followed by food recipes.  Bound in boards with color illustrations of a women cooking and some of the products it offers for sale. The Liebig Company produced aromatic extracts from beef and packaged them in small cubes for use in cooking.  This sales promotion is organized around the 18 Provinces of Italy beginning with the Piedmont and is illustrated with chromolithographic plates depicting a woman in local costume representing the territory.  This is followed by a recipe descripting a local specialty and how the use of the extract cube will enhance the flavor the dish.  This is repeated for Lombardia, Liguria, Trentino, Veneto, Istria, Emilia, Toscana, Umbria, Marche, Lazio, Abruzzo, Campania, Puglie, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicilia, and Sardegna.  Nicely produced. .

The feast of St. John the Baptist is one of two sacred days of remembrance established by the Grand Lodge in the early 18th century.  St. John was considered the patron saint of carpenters and masons, and this is commemorated every year during the last week of June.  The ceremony begins with an organ recital by Miss S. Davis, an Anthem, and a prayer by Br. G. M. Randall, D.G.M.  This is followed by an original hymn by Bro. Asa T. Caption title in large, bold type.   Broadside publication documenting the ceremony celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of President George Washington.  The program includes a reading of Washington's Farewell Address, a prayer and benediction, interspersed with a number of selections performed by the Springfield Musical Society.  The reading of Washington's Adddress was conducted in  ceremony after ceremony around the country and became an essential element of celebration once it was established as a federal holiday by an act of Congress in 1879.   In 1832, Henry Clay attempted to pass a bill which would have moved Washington's grave from Virginia to the District of Columbus, resulting in a clash of Northern states against Southern states about overreach of Federal powers… Read More

[Washington, D.C., 1844. Folio broadside. 340 x 220 mm., [13 1/3 x 8 ¾ inches].  Wide geometric mourning border. Old folds. Two small pieces lacking from right hand margin, but very good Bossier was of a Creole family, one of the earliest to settle in Louisiana. He was a cotton and sugar plantation owner. A Calhoun democrat, he served from March 4, 1843 until his death on April 24, 1844. He was later reinterred in Natchitoches, La..   His funeral service was conducted in the well of the House of Representatives and a newspaper notice about the event reads as follows:   "The lighted candles, the priests in their white surplices, and the clouds of incense wreathing in the Hall, presented a scene calculated to strike the beholder with awe. St. Louis: Published for the Author, 1869. 8vo.  185 x 120 mm., [7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches].  100, [iv] pp.  Illustrated throughout with wood engravins.  Brown publisher's cloth, title gilt on spine.  Cloth somewhat faded and worn, text block partially loose in binding.First edition.  Post Civil War book of poems, many of which highlight the lives of Confederate soldiers and leaders, including R. E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, and Andrew Johnson .  Some are of a religious nature, and a few deign humor.  The impact of the poems reflect a meloncholy for a civilization that have been lost.    The wood engravings are mostly stock vignettes and show skill but little imagination.

Godine, 2002. 8vo.  230 x 150 mm., [9 x 6 inches].  [6], 373 [1] pp.  Illustrated with 24 half tone images from the Origo Archive at La Foce.  Publisher's blue boards with white linen spine, dust jacket.  Very good copy. Highly readable biography of Iris Origo whose life as an Anglo American, married to a wealthy Tuscan land owner, captures the decline of Edwardian England, the rise of fascism in Italy, World War II, and preservation of small part of Italy from the ravages of its age.  It also focuses on Origo's writing, including her biographical work, autobiography, and literary criticism, "that has become recognized as a model of its kind." .

Fanbrini, Jacopo Leonardis, Giacomo Malosso, G. Zuliani and others.  Bound in full contemporary vellum, title in gilt on spine, edges sprinkled red and blue ink; endpapers and preliminary leaves with some light foxing, vellum light soiled with age.  A very good, unsophisticated set in contemporary vellum. Interesting work which discusses the use of hand formed letters as the designs for type at the time of the invention of printing. Requeno examines the various historical sources that make reference to this subject and discusses example from the book printed in the first one-hundred years of printing. Bigmore and Wyman, p. 253. Not in Besterman.

Bassano: Tipografia Remondiniana, 1807. 8vo. 215 x 135 mm., (8 ½ x 5 1/4/inches).  91 pp.  19th century decorated stiff paper wrappers from Remondini.  With the ex-libris of Tammaro De Marinis.  Very nice copy Rare history of printing in the Piedmont, based on his short essays published in 1778 and 1787 under the title, Lezione Sopra la Stampa, but greatly expanded.  It is the first work of its kind to focus on Piedmont printing and it was published over 100 years before Francesco Cosintini's work was published in Torino in 1914.  Vernazza includes biographies of Jean Glim and Christophe Beggiamo, early printers in the Piedmont. Roma: Da' Torchi di Mariano de Romanis e Figli, 1810.  8vo. 210 x 130 mm.  (7 ¾ x 5 inches).  (2), 106 pp.  Contemporary vellum; vellum uniformily soiled, title in ink on the spine.   Only edition.  Interesting work which discusses the development of hand formed letters during the Medieval period and hypothesizes that many manuscripts from that time were actually printed long before Gutenberg's invention of the black art.  Requeno examines the uniformity of letter forms designed that appear in early manuscripts and tries to demonstrate  that as early as the 10th century letter forms were engraved and pressed by hand onto sheets of vellum and paper by scribes work in the various monasteries in Germany and Italy.  A new edition  of his Chirotipografia was published in 2020, with an introductory essay by Antonio Castronuovo.  In his essay Castronuovo suggests that Requeno's devotion to the classical world, blurred his understanding of the great strides in art and printing that had taken… Read More
