Description:
Of Human Bondage is a coming-of-age story about a sensitive young man consumed by unrequited and self-destructive love. It is thought to be autobiographical and is considered to be Maugham's masterpiece. It was first published in 1915 and has twice been made into films. This copy was published by Heron Books in 1968 and contains original illustrations by Charles Keeping, well-known for his children's books and Charles Dickens illustrations. As is the case with all Heron Books productions, they're beautiful copies. (Heron usually published on wood-free paper, but that isn't noted here.)It is two volumes, in navy leather, or leatherette (I can't tell), with brilliant silver etching on the cover and spine. They both have a silk bookmark. They are both unread, and are so new that I don't want to open them too wide to take photos. The only flaws are on Vol II--there are two tiny marks, one at the top right corner and one at the bottom right corner.Note: If you're interested in Maugham, I have first editions… Read More

Description:
This is a copy of Sir Walter's Scott's Old Mortality, one of the Waverley novels first published in 1816. This one deals with the period of the Covenanters, featuring their victory at Loudoun Hill and their defeat at Bothwell Bridge, both in June 1679. A final section is set in 1689 at the time of the royalist defeat at Killiekrankie. This is the fourth printing of the edition issued by J.M. Dent and Sons. It was published in 1916. 4 1/2" x 7"; 450 pages. It appears to have just sat on a shelf for all of these years. You can tell that it was at least glanced at to page 127; from then on, the spine is un-cracked. At the back, the pages are still stuck together from printing. The plain red cover has faded with time. The spine is red but covered with gold lettering and patterned design. All of the wear to this book is shelfwear, although it may have been dropped because the spine has been re-glued. Inside, the pages are all clean, clear, undamaged and unmarked.

Description:
This is a copy of The Old Wives' Tale, the 1908 masterpiece written by the English author Arnold Bennett. It was first printed in the United States in 1908; in 1911, it was published as part of The Modern Library--this is a first edition from that series.

The story covers the 70 years (1840 to 1905), in England and France, of the lives of two sisters. In 1998, it was ranked No. 87 in the list of 100 greatest English-language novels of the 20th century.

It is 640 pages. Plain red boards, no jacket. Gold lettering on the spine, all intact. From page 137 to 173, there's a little brown spot on the outside edges of the pages. And there's a dent to the bottom right corner of the back cover.

Other than that, it's pristine.

Description:
This is a pristine copy of the classic tale Oliver Twist; or, the Parish Boy's Progress, originally published in 1839. It is about the trials, tribulations and salvation of a young boy, and a commentary on the brutality of British society at that time. This copy was published by Cathay Books, London, in 1984. It has not been read; the spine has not been cracked and the dust jacket is unclipped. It appears to have been imported and sold by B Mitchell publishers in North America because the price is in dollars. There is one illustration inside, uncredited (not by Phiz, likely Marcus Stone). The cover art is from the painting 'Covent Garden Market' by Phoebus Levin. The dust jacket and the cover bear the same artwork.Aside from the fact that the pages are just starting to darken at the edges, the only flaw is to the dust jacket. You can see it in the photo-the top edge has been rubbed. There is a tiny bit of shelf-wear on the back cover.

Description:
Orr: My Story is a 2013 autobiography written by Canadian hockey legend Bobby Orr, who played in the National Hockey League from 1966 to 1978, for the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Black Hawks. Considered one of the greatest players of all time, Orr's career was cut short by multiple knee injuries and surgeries. Orr was enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979 at age 31, the youngest to be inducted into the hall at that time.
It is near-perfect. There's a flaw on page 4, the page facing the title page. It looks like a bindery issue. It doesn't interfere with the rest of the book, which is bright and clean. 282 pages, including lots of photos.

Description:
"In this first installment of his masterful biography, Simon Callow captures the genius of Orson Welles as only an actor/director rooted in the entertainment industry could. Here is Welles's prodigious childhood; his youth in New York, with its fraught partnership with John Houseman and the groundbreaking triumph of his all-black Macbeth; the pioneering radio work that culminated in the notorious 1938 broadcast of War of the Worlds; and finally, his work in Hollywood, including an authoritative account of the making of Citizen Kane. Rich in detail and insight, this is far and away the definitive look at Orson Welles."Published by Random House UK 1995Printed on recycled paper. Plain black boards with brilliant gold lettering on the spine. It has a bookplate--it was awarded to a student for her contributions to a theater program. The dust jacket is a little worn, apparently from improper storage. But the book has not been read.640 pages including index. Weight over 2 lbs.

Description:
This is Dickens' last (complete) novel, and one of his most sophisticated and complicated. It was written in 1864-65 and is known for its biting social satire.
This copy was published by Chapman & Hall, Covent Garden, in August 1907. It is the first issue of this edition (see image). It was given as a gift to someone named Sophie in 1909 (see image). I can't tell if the inscription is in pencil or faded ink; I haven't tried to erase it.
It is olive green boards with a 'D' imprinted on the front cover and bright green lettering on the spine. The covers need a good brushing. The pages are a little darkened but the spine is in superb condition. There is one illustration, full-page, facing the title page; it is the original by Marcus Stone.

The following is from a review of it:The essay is one of the richest of literary forms. Its most obvious characteristics are freedom, informality, and the personal touch - though it can also find room for poetry, satire, fantasy, and sustained argument. All these qualities, and many others, are on display in The Oxford Book of Essays. Description:
This is a first reprint of the Oxford Book of Humorous Prose, a 'Conducted Tour' by the English comedy writer Frank Muir (1920-1998).
It is not a true anthology; it is a stroll through various humorists of various nationalities writing in English: the standard (Dickens, Twain), the expected (Dorothy Parker, Benchley, Shaw), the unexpected (Edgar Allen Poe, George Eliot), the well-known (Waugh, Leacock, Amis), the unknown (Johnson I. Hooper; Barry Crump), the classic (Sterne, Samuel Johnson), and the modern (Erma Bombeck, Garrison Keillor). Selections are generally very short, with bridges, often fairly humorous of themselves, by Muir. The humor ranges from the broad to the subtle. I attach photos of some of the contents pages.
It was an instant best-seller when it was published in 1990, this is the first reprint, from the same year.
It is 1154 pages and weighs 3 lbs.
