Small quarto. 111, (2)pp. From an edition of 350 copies, this is one of fifty on handmade paper, made by students of Norwich Free Academy. Inscribed by the author, an instructor in the Department of Printing at the Academy, to Hannah Dodge in January 1941. Dodge was the director of the Slater Museum at the Academy from 1926 to 1963; her husband, Ozias Dodge, who taught at and directed the Norwich Art School (likewise at the Academy) from 1897 to 1910. An impressive project executed by Bradlaw's students, who here have set their hands to various methods of illustration - chiefly photolithographs and linocuts - and experimentations with types in a range of alphabets, from the familiar Latin to Phoenician, Hebrew, and Greek, as well as others inset as block illustrations. Malutzki reprints spam emails from Hong Kong, machine-translated into German and then "back-translated" into a "not less funny" English. Added are collages, all original to the copy, made up of letter envelopes and Chinese Yuan notes. Certainly humorous at the outset, the book also bears insidious traces of the porosity between the internet, governmental control, capital exchange, and the slipperiness of "authenticity." Bound in patterned paper over boards, with paper label. Remote rubs to corners, else fine.

An account of a mid-nineteenth century domestic architectural movement, illustrated with line drawings. Bound in gray cloth with titling and octagonal ornaments in white. Fine. London: Methuen, 1935. First edition, first issue, with ads at rear dated "535" (i.e., May, 1935); later issues bear an August date. One of 3096 copies printed. A novel that explores the idea of a Nietzschean "Super-man" with great mental prowess living among ordinary human beings. John Wainwright, the titular character, winds up feeling oppressed, and, together with fellow "Homines Superiores" he locates in mental asylums and other far-flung places, flees to an island where they form a colony. Eventually, the activities of the colonists are looked upon by the rest of humanity with suspicion, and when the island is invaded, the colonists deliberately destroy it. The theme of misunderstood intellectualism was a recurring one for Stapledon, whose first book dealt with similar ethics. Signed by the author/illustrator, Jim Westergard. Illustrated with forty wood engravings immortalizing infamous people, ranging from well-known oddballs such as Lizzie Borden and Hunter Thompson, to more obscure characters, including the tenth-century Icelandic poet Gunnlaug Wormtongue, who was known for his offensive and unpopular poetry, and the Gentleman Bandit Bill Miner, who is said to be the originator of the phrase "Hands up!" Buenos Aires: Colombo, 1958. Veroni, Raúl. Quarto. 32pp. From an edition of 52 copies, this is one of thirty-two copies printed on Ingres. An elegantly-printed bilingual edition of Keats's Odes, in English and Spanish, each with a full-page lithograph by Raúl Veroni of the poem's subject. The first illustration is signed in pencil by the artist. The collection includes such poems as "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and "To a Nightingale," with English and Spanish versions of the poems opposite each other on facing pages. Veroni collaborated with the prominent Argentinean publisher Francisco A. Colombo for many years, beginning in 1937 when he was still a student at the National Academy of Fine Arts. Signed the printer and artist, Barbara Cash, at the colophon, and this copy with a signed holiday note from her laid in. Very first leaf sports a delicate array of pressed flowers, set within a double-rule border printed in pink. Bacon's essay, set in Monotype Walbaum, famously outlays his ideal garden design, inclusive of hedges, paths, and fountains, and wishy-washy on aviaries and statuary. Bound in turquoise wrappers with exposed bands of the same paper. Fine, housed in purple clamshell box. Prospectus laid in.

(Lexington, KY: Stamperia del Santuccio, 1958. Hammer, Victor. Quarto. (8)pp. One of fifty copies. This is Opus XIV, one of the most sought after titles in Victor Hammer's canon. It is printed in black, red, and blue American Uncial on Magnani paper and contains a two-color initial cut from brass by Hammer. The text is in Latin taken from Cassiodorus' Divin. Lect. Lib./ Cap. XXX published in Opera Omnia of 1650, which surrounds the English translation by Friar Augustine Wolff. Nicks to spine ends, contemporary ink ownership signature on front endpaper, else fine. Oblong quarto. 89pp. From an edition of fourteen deluxe copies and 70 standard copies, this is one of five deluxe copies chosen to be specially bound for the international traveling exhibit "InsideOUT: Contemporary Bindings of Private Press Books," and as such, it does not include the extra suite or block as listed on the colophon. The exhibit, organized by British binding society Designer Bookbinders, married the works of nine private presses with the artistry of 59 binders from the United Kingdom and the United States. The text consists of selections from Henry David Thoreau's journal, which describe the vernal pools of New England that serve as breeding habitats for all manner of amphibians. Accompanying the text are twenty-eight engravings by Lone Oak Press founder Abigail Rorer, some of which are hand-colored by the artist. Frederic Goudy's copy, with a Frederic and Bertha Goudy Collection bookplate. This work is beautifully printed after a design by Bruce Rogers, with many pages of typographic illustrations, as well as pictorial title and initials. This is the first book Rogers printed on English soil, and is, justifiably, a BR30 title. As Joseph Blumenthal recounts in Bruce Rogers: A Life in Letters, after experiencing "a growing sense of despondency and discouragement," in his later years at Riverside, Rogers accepted Emery Walker's invitation to come to England to print with him. This book, the first product of that collaboration, which also introduced Rogers to Wilfred Merton, is the only work completed by the Mall Press. N.p.: (Thomas McLean, 1810. D'Alvimart, Octavien. Framed, full-color plate of a Turkish warrior from John Heaviside Clark's The Military Costume of Turkey, engraved by F. H. Clark from a drawing by Octavien D'Alvimart. This plate shows a subaltern officer of the janizaries, or janissaries, a division of the Turkish infantry forming the Sultan's guard. The mustached officer stands in a red and gold coat holding a short sword; atop his head is a distinctive feathered hat. Framed in cream matting and a red wooden frame. Fine. Illustrated with a series of woodcuts showing how a book is made, 116 reproductions of specimen pages, twelve pages of type specimens, and thirteen versions of the Officina Bodoni's pressmarks in their original colors. This bibliography of works by Giovanni Mardersteig's renowned private press also recounts the history of the press and explores its creative process. Extremely fine in tan cloth backed in brown morocco, with original slipcase which has a tiny snag in the morocco-trimmed opening. T.e.g. Together with: memorial keepsake for Mardersteig, and a catalogue for the Press's1954 exhibit at the British Museum - both printed by the Officina Bodoni, and both fine in wrappers.
