Description:
Fine frontis. port. of the author. xvi, 450, [2] pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, cont. calf, double gilt fillet round sides, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed by J. Hughs, 1757. First edition, and a lovely copy, of one of the 18th-century classics of English husbandry. Lisle (1666?-1722), who lived at Crux-Easton in Hampshire and had estates in Wiltshire and in the Isle of Wight, assiduously gathered information from the leading farmers of all aspects of husbandry. While not an innovator but an intelligent and careful observer, he later added comments based on his own experience. Thomas Lisle, the author's son, reworked his father's materials and, using them, published the present work. Some of the chapter headings include plowing, sowing, manuring, pastures, the garden, water and waters, etc. There is an interesting chapter on the varieties of ploughs and Lisle has provided a two-page glossary of technical terms. The handsome frontispiece portrait of Lisle,… Read More

4 p.l., xix, 164 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf by John Brindley, single gilt fillet round sides, the four corners of each cover elaborately gilt with Brindley's characteristic dolphins surmounted by crowns within circular wreaths, spine divided into six compartments, five of which with the golden fleece device in gilt, green morocco lettering piece in remaining compartment. London: J. Brindley, 1728. First edition; an extraordinary "illuminated" copy with the title-page, initials, and section headings all heightened in gold, and bound by John Brindley, bookbinder to Frederick, Prince of Wales and Queen Caroline. The initials along with the vignettes and typographical ornaments at the beginning and end of each chapter have also been skillfully decorated in blue, red, and yellow. This remarkable book, with all the decorations contemporary, comes from the library at Marble Hill House, the Palladian villa constructed 1724-29 at Twickenham which was built by Henrietta Howard (ca.… Read More

Description:
[192] pp. 8vo, orig. hardcover, orig. dust-jacket (a little foxed & backed). New York: Bill Adler Books, Inc., 1982. An intentionally blank book protesting nuclear proliferation and the Cold War, designed by Irene Friedman, but its authorship is unclear. The text on the dust-jacket reads: "The purpose of this book is to offer everything that is known about effective procedures in case of a nuclear attack...Because neither country has seriously negotiated nuclear reduction or even a minimal 'freeze,' it follows that sooner or later bombs will fall. It is with that inevitability in mind that this manual is offered to the American public." Near fine; dust-jacket backed with paper. WorldCat shows just two "real" copies in the United States. ❧ M. Folding frontis. & numerous plates (many folding). Large folio, orig. cloth. London: [Printed at the Oxford University Press for] Maggs Bros. Ltd., 1975. Number "3" of 300 numbered copies, signed by the collector, presentation copy, inscribed by Theodore Besterman to Hardy Grieb (1946-90), bookseller at E.P. Goldschmidt and later a partner at Martin Breslauer: "for Hardy Grieb with cordial regards Th.B." This is a highly interesting copy, containing the notes regarding provenance and condition as well as appraised values of Besterman's wonderful collection of 381 books illustrative of the arts. The sale of the collection was handled by Hardy Grieb and Jacques Vellekoop and the books are now at the Getty Library. Besterman (1904-76), psychical researcher, bibliographer, and founder of the Voltaire Institute, formed several collections over the years: calligraphy (now at Dartmouth), bibliography (purchased by Martin Breslauer), the present collection, and others.… Read More

Description:
Many black & white illus. Ca. [85] pp. 4to (228 x 182 mm.), orig. pictorial wrappers, title on spine. Tokyo: Galerie Watari, 1983. A rare On Kawara (29,771 days, i.e. 1932-2014) exhibition catalogues; it is curiously supplemented by miniature stickers of the artist's signature Date Paintings. We've also learned that the One Million Years Foundation no longer recognizes this publication as part of the printed oeuvre about the artist. Founded in 1972 by Shizuko Watari (1932-2012), Galerie Watari hosted exhibitions by Kawara, Haring, Broodthaers, Nam June Paik, and Shinro Ohtake. The gallery closed in 1989 and the year after, Watari formed the Watari-um museum in Shibuya. The present exhibition was held concurrently with another one of Kawara's work at the Galerie Watari, One Million Years. This show comprised exclusively paintings from the Today series executed from 1981 to 1983. Much of the catalogue is a reproduction of Kawara's journal, in which he meticulously kept records on each painting he… Read More
