Washington, DC: Robert Armstrong, 1853. Hardcover. Small 4to. Original blind-embossed brown cloth with modern black cloth tape spine. 86pp. Frontisiece. Good plus. A tight, decent first edition in the striking boards bearing a deeply blind-embossed "He Still Lives" and "Daniel Webster" ornament and superb steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait "Engraved by W.H. Dougal, from a Daguerreotype by Whipple." Interesting nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf: "Presented to E.G. Ryan Esqr / for his little son / by Jas. L. Woodside / Washington May 1854." Edward George Ryan (1810-80) was a well-known lawyer, judge and politician of Madison, Wisconsin, while Woodside was an obscure government official who served as clerk of the House Committee of Claims.
