OLLIE JOHNSTON Letters are rare. He wrote three of the letters to fans referring to his work on Disney's, "The Jungle Book," based on Rudyard Kipling's stories of the same name. The letters range in dates between 1980-1983. The outstanding letter in this small group is a Typed Letter Signed on "Walt Disney presents The Jungle Book" stationery, 4to, Burbank CA, Feb. 23, 1980. The printed color illustrations on the stationery show the main characters of the film. Johnston writes to Ms. Scott, "I am enclosing under separate cover some enlargements from the "Jungle Book" film. Most of the Baloo pictures are taken from scenes that I animated...I also did the little girl and Mowgli...I am glad that your class likes the character of Baloo. He was one of my all-time favorites to work with...when I did the scene of Baloo and Bagheera dancing off into the sunset at the end of the picture, I was quite sad. Clokey has drawn his best known character Gumby and his horse, Pokey with Gumby's arm around his horse. Pokey says, "Lots of Love!!" to the left of his image and Clokey has signed to the right, "Art Clokey." Clokey drew his figures to the lower edge of the envelope. Autograph

Lantz has drawn his cheery wide-eyed woodpecker on an orange colored page, outlined in pen and colored with red marker. The famed cartoonist has signed in full with date, "Walter Lantz 1990." The image measures 4 1/2 x 9 inches showing through mat, and the basic bright black wooden frame is 10 x 14 inches. A white mat highlights the drawings colors. An appealing presentation. Autograph

The drawing shows Flagg and fellow artist Harry Beckhoff watch a mouse, draw. Flagg has written a caption at the top margin of the card above the figures of himself and Beckhoff. Referring to the green shirted mouse with pen in hand, Flagg writes, "He's my stooge - does my king size stuff." Below the art table, he writes in red, "Merry Xmas, [in purple] 1950 to Harry X Handsome wife, [in green] from Monty." A bright and appealing ink and water color holiday illustration. Autograph

Best known as a playwright, Odets was also a painter often working with water color as shown here. The peaceful painting offered here is bordered in pencil possibly to show where a mat or frame would go or for trimming. While Odets did not sign his work, we believe he titled it. The artwork measures 6 x 8 inches and floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Frame measures 15 ½ x 13 3/4. Odets' first art exhibit was in 1947 at the Neumann Gallery in New York.  He is best known for his plays "Waiting for Lefty",  "Awake and Sing!," both (1935), "The Country Girl" (1950) made into a film. 'On Loan' an exhibition of borrowed art lent by artists. Nov. 22-Dec. 19th , 1980...Cambridge Road, London...." Our edition consists of a cream colored labeled box, numbered on the bottom, that holds small library card holders and cards identifying artist and their artwork. Some of the holders include cards with the images of the artwork, and several cards are not in holders. The cream colored box is inserted in a heavier structured paper box also numbered on the bottom. Our edition is number "3 of 15" and consists of 33 signed card holders and 61 cards. The small cards measuring 3 1/4 x 2 inches are printed in black as are the library card holders of similar dimensions. Artists participating in the exhibition have signed their respective named card holders. This is a highly unusual drawing of a male figure in profile, full length from spurs to large brimmed hat, wearing brown paints, buckled boots, baggy red shirt and blue hat. He has a mustache with both guns drawn, one at his side and the second pointed and fired. This work is from a small collection of his miscellaneous drawings from a sketchbook and scraps of paper, some signed and others unsigned. HARDIE GRAMATKY Drew and Signed a sketch of Little Toot, the New York Harbor tugboat, with a little boy's mischievous personality. His charming cartoon is probably the best known work of artist Hardie Gramatky. He worked at Disney Studios as an animator, was a highly respected water colorist, wrote and illustrated many books for children in addition to his most famous tugboat. On a 3 x 5 inch undated card, the artist sketched his playful tugboat broadly smiling, eyes purposefully fixed straight ahead as he moves on the water. Accomplished in blue ink, Gramatky dedicated the drawing and signed, "To...with best wishes 'Little Toot" and Hardie Gramatky." "Little Toot" was first published in 1939 by G. P. Putnam's Sons, and in honor of Gramatky's 100th birthday, Penguin Putnam reissued the tugboat story in a version closer to the original brightly colored publication. It also became an animated segment in Disney's 1948 film "Melody Time." Autograph

Princeton University Art Museum has a copy of this etching which is described as a "faithful copy after an oil sketch originally painted on wood by Rubens between 1613 and 1615, depicting an unknown man of African descent expressing various emotions." MYRON "GRIM" NATWICK draws Betty Boop kicking up her heels to celebrate a birthday and the end of the year holidays. The sketch catches the readers' eye about midway along the first page left margin of this three page letter. In a large hand, Natwick first sends birthday wishes and continues noting the passage of time as the holiday season begins starting with Thanksgiving. "How fast everything moves at this time of year." He draws an open exclamation mark filled in with yellow water color on the right margin and opposite his drawing. Betty Boop's hair is shaded with the same color. "After Thanksgiving, time moves on 12 cylinders...." He continues with news of mutual friends and signs, "Grim." Two Original Sketches Signed. Chip 'n' Dale Sketch Signed, on a 3 x 5 inch card. Justice sketched two of his popular and favorite characters, the chipmunks Chip and Dale. He inscribed and signed the drawing rendered in black marker, "Best wishes to Bill, Bill Justice." Undated. The second sketch is of a smiling Pinocchio on the LOVE Stamp First Day Cover, accomplished in pencil , inscribed and signed, postmarked Aug. 8, 1988. Justice sketched Pinocchio near the red "LOVE" above four red roses identified as Aristocral Cachets and above the printed explanation of the rose's association with love. Between Pinocchio's face and the very popular and colorful rose adorned Love stamp, Justice wrote, "Best Wishes to Kati," and signed, "Bill Justice," below the postmark. Very Good. Wendelin, the creator of the beloved fire preventing bear, has drawn the face of Smokey wearing his hat bearing his name and has signed under the bear's chin, "Rudolf Wendelin." The pencil lines are visible over which the drawing was accomplishes, and the card appears to have been cut from a larger sheet. Autograph

We are afraid it might rile the wrong people at Disney." Signed "In a hurry, Carl." After retiring, Barks created oil paintings of his cartoon characters. The specific reference here to Disney may relate to issues regarding the sale of these paintings. Barks painted non-Disney characters including some from mythology to avoid further conflict until the Disney company approved Barks' oil painting for a special collection of his stories of the character he created, "Uncle Scrooge McDuck: His Life and Times. Ketcham has drawn a large and cheery Dennis the Menace in full length wearing his sling shot at the back of his pants. 4to on orange color paper, n.d., n.p. He holds a red crayon and a card with, "XXX Dennis" written in red. Above his head, Ketcham has written, "This OK Ron?" and next to Dennis, "Warm regards, Hank Ketcham." On a First Day Cover, 8vo, postmarked Hansel And Gretel Anguilla, November 11, 1985, Dedini has drawn a picture of his character "Mickey Mouse" in the lower right corner and has signed. The sketch is rendered in black felt tip pen. The envelope, on the sealing side, contains a full printed picture of the Mickey Mouse cartoon, the brother Grimm Walt Disney Production. The other side contains three full color postmarks of the Disney Cartoon. This is the First Day Cover from the Hansel and Gretel Anguilla. It is stamped with a special stamp for the First Day Of Issue, Anguilla and appropriately postmarked. Autograph
