Detroit: C.A. Newcomb, 1932. Softcover. Very good. Viola V. Vincent was an entertainer who billed herself as a diseuse (monologist), performing a "mosaic of song and story" in which she spoke and sang in the accent and costume of women of different nations. This packet of materials produced by her agent was used to book her appearances at women's clubs and similar community organizations. She is described as "exquisite," and "an outstanding artist" who will attract paying audiences and help organizations raise funds. Programs from previous engagements, newspaper reviews, and testimonials from clubs are provided (most from Michigan, where she lived, but also from New York and New Jersey), and a brochure illustrated with half-tone photos shows her in costume as various characters. A contemporary newspaper article describing her as "a coloratura soprano of repute" notes that "the artist in private life is Mrs. C.A. Newcomb III of Birmingham [Michigan].

Light handling wear, soiling to wrappers; contents clean and sound. From the artist: "I am fascinated by the source of color in flowers as I am as fascinated by their terminal beauty. I am not afraid to mix complimentary colors together so as to be muddy of moody. There is so much paint and so little time. I wrestle with abstract non-objective painting because I can't be totally aware all the time even with maintenance and I don't like decoration. A limit of color is the limit of my evolution."

Original stapled wrappers have chipping and internal tape repairs and are detached from text block; internals very good. Not found in OCLC. The Pannonia Beneficial Organization was founded in 1896 through the merger of three existing Jewish benevolent societies, all of which had been formed between 1882 and 1894, a period during which thousands of Russian Jewish immigrants settled in Philadelphia. The Home for Jewish Orphans, located at the corner of Tenth and Bainbridge Streets, was one of Pannonia's first projects. Union Pacific Railroad, 1938. Very good. Pictorial map, 18" x 31", folding to a 9" x 4" brochure (titled "Boulder Dam"), with text, illustrations, and colorful pictorial cover on the verso. A few pinholes at the intersections and tiny tears at margins, but overall a very nice example of this appealing map. which covers the region served by the Union Pacific Railroad from Salt Lake City in the north to Boulder City in the south, and from Las Vegas in the west to the Grand Canyon in the east. Various geographical features (mountain ranges, washes, canyons, and individual peaks) are identified, as are National Parks and Monuments.

5" x 10" cloth album (labeled in the back as a "Ward's Album for Unmounted Photographs") with thirty-six 2.25" x 6.75" photographs inserted each side of 18 thick cardstock leaves. A few of the images have some hand-coloring. Leaves were original mounted on cloth stubs, but the cloth has deteriorated and the leaves are now laid in loose. Otherwise very good condition. Ten photographs show scenes at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition -- including the Temple of Music, the Electricity Building, the Mines Building, the Grand Canal, gardens and fountains, parts of the Midway, and an event in the arena involving Native Americans (possible the "sham battle" staged between six Indian tribes and the U.S. Infantry stationed at Bufflo, which took place on the closing day of the Exposition, November 2, 1901). Ninth Judicial Circuit Historical Society, 1999. Hardcover. Fine. 248 pp, with acknowledgements, short titles, index. Clean and tightly bound, with no visible wear. No dust jacket. A legal history study focusing on relations between indigenous populations and whites in North America when dealing with disputes over homicides. Reid highlights both the dissention between cultural ideas and crosscultural assimilation of ideas about homicide, vengeance, and the issues created.

New edition (first published in a limited edition in 1951), issued as Volume 128 in the Civilization of the American Indian series. 372 pp, with illustrations and index. Slight dust soiling to top edge of text block, bookplate on half-title page, else a fine copy. Dust jacket is price-clipped and lightly rubbed. According to the jacket, "Hyde tells the story of the Pawnees objectively, reinforcing it with firsthand accounts gleaned from many sources, both Indian and white" and "looks far back into tribal history, assessing Pawnee oral history against anthropological evidence and examining military patterns and cultural characteristics.

Tri-fold brochure,  3.5" x 6.5", unfolding to 10.5" x 6.5", illustrated with half-tone photos and a diagram showing the features of the new street car.  Creases, some staining, partial split along one fold, date in pencil on front panel; good. This scarce brochure was created to introduce streetcar passengers in Baltimore to an innovative new style of car and system of collecting fares. The United Railways & Electric Company was founded in 1899, and introduced the new pay-as-you-enter car in 1910 (about the same time the cars were being introduced in many other cities).  The brochure explains that riders will now enter the cars at one end only, and exit on the opposite end, so that "ingress and egress are orderly and without confusion, while stopping times at corners is reduced by nearly one-half," and conductors will no longer pass through the car to collect fares, but take them upon entry. Copy No, 8 of 200 signed and numbered copies printed specially for members of the Zamorano Club by Grant Dahlstron at the Castle Press in Pasadena. With a small signed Christmas Card from Goodman laid in. Light offsetting to the endpapers, but still a fine copy, in the original plain protective dust jacket, which was green and is now mostly faded to brown. Reprints a scarce overland narrative written in 1878 and published in 1896.
