Lima, Peru: Andean Air Mail & Peruvian Times, (1979). Stated 1st Peruvian edition. Text in English. A study of the enigmatic Nasca / Nazca lines and geoglyphs of Peru. Signed by Duncan Masson, an early explorer and amateur archaeologist who first encountered the lines as a teenager in the 1920s while living in Ica. Masson studied the mystery for the rest of his life and guided a number of official archaeological expeditions in the 1950s and 1960s. Signed as "D. Masson" in Ica in 1981, with an inscription "from the boy on page 24." A youthful Masson is pictured on that page in the Model T he used to explore the lines. The author's preface acknowledges Masson, and he is mentioned several times in the text. Paperbound. Approx. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. 208 pp., index. Illustrated by b&w photos, maps, etc. VG with some edge wear, one small tear and related crease at the top of the rear cover. Sound binding. Clean internally. Scarce signed by Masson (d. 1986.)

Signed wood-engraved print from 1990 by John DePol (1913-2004), a master engraver and prolific book illustrator. The print depicts a scene from The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe. It shows the narrator of the classic 1842 tale seated before his inquisitors. Part of a DePol series commissioned for a 1991 limited edition book of 150 copies. This print was evidently part of a small overrun and was never bound into a book. Signed in pencil by DePol. Professionally matted and ready to frame. DePol has also written "Bowne/Poe 6/90 X1" in pencil in the print margin. (Concealed under the ivory-color matting.) Matted size is 11 x 14 inches. Sheet size is 8.5 x 11 inches. Image is approx. 4.25 x 7 inches. Small bump to the upper corner of the mat, but Fine otherwise. We also have in stock another print from this series.
