Description:
Yorktown, 1869. General wear.. A pair of letters from Emily to her family keeping them appraised of her trip to Yorktown [NY] in January 1869. The two letters are written within a day of one another, with one addressed to her parents and one to her brother. The family's last name is not mentioned. The letters are jam-packed with the events of daily life. She is somewhat ill perhaps with consumption and speaks often of her health. Additionally religion plays a significant role in her writing. Of note in the letters is Emily's description of a 'colored meeting' she went to, which was a church service for African Americans. Emily writes about how the 'spirit' moved the church members to what she perceived as frightening noises and groans, and that due to this she wouldn't feel comfortable going to another service. The letters also discuss Emily's health and her fear that she might have bronchitis. As well as updates on her family. Measures 7 3/4" x 4 3/4". Below are a few excerpts from the letters.… Read More

1888. Two (2) photographs taken of a group of young people while sitting on a porch. It appears as though they are on a holiday or picnic, as several people are holding lawn tennis rackets. The first photo shows a group of thirteen (13) people, some appearing quite affectionate or familiar towards their partner. The second photograph depicts only six (6) rather dejected looking members of the group. Each is wearing or holding a sign that reads "LEFT", while the remaining spaces have signs marked "TAKEN". Presumably there was some courting going on between the times of the two photographs, as the remaining individuals were all that were "left". A sign in front of second photograph reads 1888. Connecticut, 1925. Two hand-made posters by Anna-Louise (Rudin) Falk. She was an artist who lived in Connecticut and was known for portrait and still-life painting, illustration. These two posters are advertisements for events, the first a play and the second a charity event. "Nothing But The Truth" appears to be the play based on novel of the same name by Frederic S. Isham. The play is a comedy about a stockbroker who must tell the truth for a whole day. The illustration accompanying the poster appears to be the logo for the performers, 'Parish Players', as the eyes are two 'P's. Measures 18 3/4" x 14" "Tulip Tea" is a poster advertising a benefit hosted for the Branford Visiting Nurse Association in May 1925. Tickets were 35 cents each, and there was food, candy, dolls, baskets, toys, and a picture gallery. The poster itself has two whimsical renditions of tulips on either side of the text, in color (red, yellow, orange, and green). The title of the poster, Tulip Tea, is done in a gradient of… Read More
