Peace is Our Answer is a 1950 collection of twelve linocuts by Australian artist and committed peace activist Noel Counihan, inspired by the politics and social hardships he'd experienced during and since the Second World War. They are accompanied by poems by Jack Lindsay, and have prefatory poems by Paul Eluard, Pablo Neruda, and Louis Aragon. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age. There is an old, small water stain to the covers at the top of the spine but this has not penetrated to the pages. Slight tanning to the covers but they are otherwise in good order. The contents in clean condition and the inner binding secure.

As well as the introductory essay, it carries 15 drawings from Peter de Francia. In Ashton's essay she places de Francia within a humanistic tradition of draftsmen as freedom fighters stretching from Goya to Guttuso, via Beckmann, Picasso and Grosz. There are shades, too, of a distinctly British tradition of caricature, of Hogarth and Rowlandson, in de Francia's pointed social satire. It was the first complete philosophical exposition for separating the beautiful and the sublime into their own respective rational categories. It attracted the attention of prominent thinkers such as Denis Diderot and Immanuel Kant. Condition: This copy is in good condition for age. The cloth is in good shape but faded to the spine. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19.5 × 12.5cm, 284pp. In the years after the Great War, a young couple move to an Elizabethan farmhouse, Pigeon Hoo, on the Kent / Sussex borders (believed to be Tenterden). They meet a cast of characters from builders to gardeners, and this novel relates their experiences in the country. As an interesting aside, Franklin Lushington was an artillery officer in the Great War and was poet Edward Thomas's commanding officer at Arras (he later wrote about this in The Gambardier under the pseudonym Mark Severn). Condition: The book itself is in strong readable condition, with some light foxing tot he title page and page edges. A previous seller has penned the price of 2/- to the rear endpaper. The dustwrapper is good, with several small closed tears to the edges and spine but is now within a protective sleeve and has not been price-clipped.
