Description:
Sydney: Allen & Unwin, 1986. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. First Australian edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 23.5 × 15.5cm, 190pp. "Eyewitness accounts of war give the real feel of battle-the triumphs and the tragedies. Padre brings together first hand reports of the major battles of the First World War, written by observers who saw things differently. Australian clergymen accompanied the troops to the camps and battles of the Great War, not as fighters usually, but as chaplains. Their job was to minister to the men's spiritual needs and to keep up the men's morale. Many chaplains kept diaries and almost all of them wrote home to their families, their colleagues and the church newspapers. Realising that the padres had been neglected by the ofiicial historians and all other writers on Australians at war, McKernan set out to collect these records. This collection includes some of the best writings from the front: it is acute and perceptive but it is also born out of…

London: Jonathan Cape, 1968. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 20 × 13.5cm, 256pp. People of the Streets was Tony Parker's sixth book, for which he spent a year approaching and interviewing people in London who were living their daily lives on street corners, along gutters or in subways. With his usual skill he coaxed them out of their natural reticence, born of solitude, into an unfamiliar but hugely illuminating spontaneity. With a superb dustwrapper design, and black & white illustrations by Anthony Colbert, seven characters tell their story in this book: Charles Turner, a frail, knowledgeable artist too independent to claim National Assistance; John Robertson, car-washer & veteran wino; Clare Jones, a policeman's daughter who sells ties from a suitcase; Jimmy Bolton, a street musician who takes LSD; Billy Costello, only 24 and already a derelict; Alice Anderson, a 'Paper Lady' brought up in…

Description:
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1994. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Soft cover. Good. First paperback edition, second printing. 21.5 × 14cm, 347pp. Peter Warlock (Philip Heseltine) is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic of twentieth-century British composers. He was by turns a sensitive songwriter of remarkable genius, a witty and caustic critic, a rare scholar of early music, and a friend of some of the leading figures of the day - including William Walton, Jacob Epstein, and D. H. Lawrence. This is a complete account of this mercurial musician. Barry Smith uses new and often controversial material in telling his real, and frequently outrageous story. Here is the man, the composer, writer, and scholar, from his dangerous involvement in the occult to his long lasting loves and hates - all of which ended by his own hand in a gas-filled London flat on a cold winter's morning in 1930. Condition: There is light creasing to the spine and a previous owner's name to the reverse of the…

New York: New York Studio School, 2008. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition. Slim paperback, stapled binding. 20 × 20.5cm, 23pp. This slim book accompanied an exhibition at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture in 2008. As well as the introductory essay, it carries 15 drawings from Peter de Francia. In Ashton's essay she places de Francia within a humanistic tradition of draftsmen as freedom fighters stretching from Goya to Guttuso, via Beckmann, Picasso and Grosz. There are shades, too, of a distinctly British tradition of caricature, of Hogarth and Rowlandson, in de Francia's pointed social satire.
