Very good plus: bright with a faint vertical crease to wrappers and first and last few leaves, penciled note in the margin of one page. This promotional for Pasadena contains 16 full page photographic illustrations and a small map. It provides a brief history, touts the climate and transportation accessibility, and waxes on the city's educational opportunities and morals as it "was founded by an intelligent class of people and during the whole period of its history it has continued to draw unto itself residents of like character, until now it is distinguished as a city wherein the standard of intellectuality, refinement, morality, thrift, enterprise and similar qualities is exceptionally high." Images include railway stations, the Evanston Inn, Hotel Green and an Ostrich farm. OCLC locates four copies, all in California.

A profusely illustrated county history that includes hundreds of short family histories and an 11 page index. Although deemed Volume II, this volume can stand alone as Volume I was issued 10 years earlier. Scarce in commerce with no other copies available online as of July 2016. South Dakota, 1893. Very good. 6¾" x 11¼". Steel post binder with contemporary semiwraparound enclosure made of thick wood boards, held together with a calf backstrip. 25 thick card leaves, most of which are interleaved with typing paper with a total of 50 albumen photographs glued down, one per page. Photos measure 4 3/8" x 7 5/8" and 39 are captioned in the negative, though a few are hard to read. Album very good: moderate wear, leaves a bit wavy; photos generally near fine or better. This is an album of large photographs depicting the Sioux at the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation (RSIR, also known as the "Rosebud Agency") in South Dakota. The album also features some of the early work of an important photographer who dedicated his life to documenting the Rosebud Sioux, John Alvin Anderson. According to an article by Claes H. According to a finding aid for some of her papers at the University of Houston, "Margaret Bosshardt Pace Willson (1919-2006) was born in San Antonio, TX to prominent San Antonio businessman, Frank J. Bosshardt, and German-born Hettie Koehler, the niece of the famous Pearl Brewery Koehlers. Leaves very good with toning, and occasional, chipping at edges. The American Canoe Association was founded in 1880 by 15 avid canoeists. Today, the organization boasts over 30,000 members and this photo album documents its fifth-ever general meet (and its 14th overall) held along the Hudson River. Photos measure 8" x 10" and nearly all are either adhesive mounted or stapled along one edge, a few are captioned. Album very good with moderate wear, photos generally very good or better. This is an album of large professional images featuring Columbia, South Carolina's City Ice Company (CIC), as well as the South Carolina Ice Manufacturers Association. It was created during a period where refrigerators were becoming more common, and the use of ice companies was diminishing. Per contemporary news accounts, CIC applied for a charter to do business in December 1926 and in January 1927 issued this statement as to its purpose: "The City Ice Company . . . was organized to give to the people of Columbia a more efficient ice delivery service. Most photos measure 2¾" x 4¾" and nearly all are captioned. Album good due to lacking rear cover, a front cover with heavy wear and some loss and a new string tie; leaves with a hint of waviness, otherwise internally near fine or better with approximately one quarter of the photos with varying degrees of fading. This is an album filled with page after page of captivating construction photos, documenting the building of a gas plant in the Bronx. The work was done by Baltimore's Bartlett Hayward Company for New York's Consolidated Gas Company, which is now Con Edison. The plant converted coal into coal gas and coke first by pulverizing it and then baking it for 13 hours at 1100 degrees centigrade. The coke was then cooled at the water tower. This is a photo album with approximately 80 photographs showing Native Americans in the northernmost regions of the United States. It was compiled by a Caucasian man who appears to have been in the military, but he may have been a civilian employee who we think was there to work at the Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site as a dentist. The compiler is seen in at least 15-20 photos and we know his name, and that he was a dentist, due to an included award of merit he received for his service in Point Barrow. Point Barrow is one of the northernmost cities in the world; it's north of the Arctic Circle and today has a population of around 5,000. At the… Read More

Nearly all photos are captioned with narrative descriptions on album pages, the album as a whole containing approximately 4000 words; many with brief captions in the negative or on photo versos as well. This album is filled with stunning images of two disparate genres of performance art: live theater and window displays—and the window displays are devoted exclusively to the Fowler Brothers book store, then located at 747 South Broadway in Los Angeles. While not denoted as such, the colleague who sold the album to us says it was acquired with a scrapbook that was compiled by the actor shown here: a Richard H. Sloan who appeared in many Los Angeles plays from 1920-1926 and was stage manager of the Literary Theatre of Los Angeles. Contents near fine or better. This is a detailed photo album of a three month trip from New York to South America with an emphasis on rail travel and topography as well as street and town scenes. The photos are mounted on rectos only along with a handwritten number which corresponds to a detailed caption on the opposite page, along with the date each was taken. Album good with heavy wear loss of some surface covering as well as complete separation of the covering of the front cover, which is entirely lacking from the rear; photos generally near fine or better. This is an album that was almost certainly created by an employee of Carl F. Skinner & Sons, a Kalamazoo, Michigan distributor of the Power House Candy Bar. Power House was popular for several decades and was manufactured at the time by the Walter H. Johnson Candy Company out of Chicago, and was later part of Peter Paul. This is a collection of photos compiled by an African American man from Illinois, Elmus Norris, Jr. Norris was born in 1929 raised in Murphysboro and attended Murphysboro High School. The album covers Norris' life from high school through early adulthood, though there are a handful of photos from an earlier period likely showing his family around their home. High school photos include an entire page devoted to a basketball tournament in 1945 and there are two 8x10 team photos and two smaller group shots, showing that Elmus was one of two Black players on the team. This album depicting Sudan in the mid-1920s was compiled by an unknown member of the British military who was there to assist in training the newly created Sudan Defence Force (SDF). It's filled with exceptional imagery of Sudan and its native peoples taken not long after political turmoil and violence in the area led to a drastic shift in Great Britain's approach to the country. After World War I, anti-British sentiment in Egypt leached into Sudan. Very good photograph on good mount: a few small stains to photo, corner wear to mount; inked notations on photo and verso. This photograph combines the work of a Texas-based African American photographer with documentation of a nearly forgotten segregated school in Houston as well as its principal. The photo depicts 28 students of the 7th grade class of Houston's Langston School (also known as "Langston Grade School" and "Langston Col*red School") along with a man we presumed to be a teacher. Thanks to an inscription on the verso, "7th Grade/W.J. Smith," we were able to extrapolate the name of the school and that the man seated in the front row, W.J. Smith, was the school's principal in addition to teaching 7th grade. We learned a bit about the school and W.J. Smith from contemporary newspaper accounts. Rio de Janeiro, 1906. Good. Five black and white photographs measuring between 8½" x 11" and 9 3/8" x 11¾" and all are captioned in the negative. One photo (the street scene) fair due to heavy creasing and two tears; the others good minus to very good with varying degrees of creasing. This is a collection of five large photographs documenting a period of intense urban renewal and important occurrences in Rio de Janeiro history. The photographer, Augusto Cezar de Malta Campos, was born in Alagoas, Brazil, in 1864 and was living in Rio de Janeiro as of 1888. In 1903, Rio's Mayor Francisco Pereira Passos appointed him as a photographer to document his urban renewal work as well as the work of the Rio de Janeiro Tramway, Light and Power Company, as it installed electric tramways and new public street lighting. One of the images here captioned,"Rua do Callete - Rio 25-7-06. Adm. do Dr. Passos," was certainly part of that project. This is a collection of photographs by an important Black photographer, Tony Rhoden, depicting several events in the career of then-Alderman Eugene Sawyer. Sawyer was initially elected alderman of Chicago's 6th Ward in 1971 and by 1987 he was the longest serving African American alderman on the Chicago City Council. After the sudden death of Mayor Harold Washington, Sawyer ultimately became Chicago's second Black mayor after a special city council election. These photos document several events of Sawyer's work as alderman and while none are captioned, several of the events are easily identifiable based on clues within the photos. Album, book and photographs all very good: light edge wear to covers and some light scattered spotting. This is a pair of items which provide a unique glimpse into the history of Morris Ranch, Texas. The first item is a book, They Came To Morris Ranch, compiled in 1992 by the Morris Ranch Cemetery Association. Now a ghost town located just outside Fredericksburg, about two hours west of Austin, we learn from the book that "in its heyday, it was the largest breeding and training facility for thoroughbred race horses in the State of Texas and the second largest in the United States."
