Description:
San Francisco, CA: A.L. Bancroft, 1874. Hardcover. Good. Half leather, a few rubs, scuffs a tiny wormhold, and a small split towards top of front joint, Previous owner's names and dates assigned, to front free endpaper (dates 1874 and 1877). Interestingly enough, the introduction of this particular Pacific Coast Series of readers occasioned a certain political hubub revolving around Senate Bill 51 in California. McGuffey's, of the East, had long held a virtual monopoly on school district mass purchases, and after the introduction of the Pacific Coast series, went to no small expense disseminating propaganda that to adopt these, would end up costing taxpayers way more than sticking with the tried and true Eastern reader. This was disproven and the reader was adopted by large school districts in Sacramento and elsewhere.
