Hardcover. Fine. 8vo. Bound in contemporary limp vellum with the title in 16th century manuscript upon the spine. Ex Officina Henrici Stephani Parisiensis typographi (Henri Estienne), AN. M. D. VII (1557). First Edition. (Schreiber 141, Renouard 116 and Adams 939). These lectures were eloquent exhortations to virtue, filled with quotations chiefly from Plato and Homer, their philosophical content deriving from Platonism and Cynicism. At the end are appended 19 pages of critical notes by Henri Estienne. (Schreiber). Maximus Tyrius (Maximus of Tyre) was a Greek rhetorician and philosopher who flourished in the time of the Antonines and Commodus, 2nd century A.D. After the manner of the sophists of his age, he travelled extensively, delivering lectures on the way. His writings contain many allusions to the history of Greece, while there is little reference to Rome; hence it is inferred that he lived longer in Greece, perhaps as a professor at Athens. Although nominally a Platonist, he is really an… Read More

Hardcover. Fine. Illustrated with engraved vignette on title page. 4to. Modern half-leather-backed boards. London: Printed for R. Dodsley . . . 1744. First Edition, first issue, with the presence of the footnote on page 9 and page 20 misnumbered 22. Anna Seward considered this blank verse poem the finest metaphysical poem in any language. Erasmus and Darwin preferred Akensides blank verse to that of Milton, and Dodsley agreed to publish the poem on the recommendation of Alexander Pope. Samuel Johnson, in his Lives of the Poets, comments on Akensides poem: Akenside was one of those poets who have felt very early the motions of genius, and one of those students who have very early stored their memories with sentiments and images. Many of his performances were produced in his youth; and his greatest work, The Pleasures of Imagination, appeared in 1744. I have heard Dodsley, by whom it was published, relate, that when the copy was offered him, the price demanded for it, which was an hundred and twenty… Read More

Description:
John Almon was an English journalist and writer on political subjects, notable for his efforts to secure the right to publish reports on the debates in Parliament. He was a reporter for the Gazetteer, and published "A Review of Mr. Pitt's Administration," which was popular with the opposition. From May of 1767 to December of 1769, he edited numerous pieces of political satire into The Political Register and Impartial Book Review. Offered here is the third volume, from July to December of 1768, with numerous pieces on political controversy and the American colonies. The 1768 issue is also important as it re-prints in England one of the key essays of the revolution "Parliamentary Power, American Considerations on the Nature and Extent of It" which had just been published in Philadelphia. During the American Revolution, he published a monthly series of papers entitled "The Remembrancer on Events in America." Frontispiece. (Fleeman, I, 785-8; Courtney & Nichol Smith, p. 87; Chapman & Hazen, pp. 142-3; Rothschild 1242; Liebert 73).The Prince of Abissinia, Samuel Johnson's only novel, was written in the evenings of one week in an effort to raise funds for his mother's care, and eventually, to pay for her funeral. Its rapid execution is said to have been due to the fact that he had been pondering its chief topics all his life. It was published anonymously, and soon became his most popular work. Description:
Engraved vignette of Europe and Northern Africa on title. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half-calf over marbled board, recently rebacked. London: Printed for J. W. 1714. First Edition. (ESTC T44576) English translation of the Abbé de Saint-Pierre's proposal for universal peace, widely seen as a precursor to the modern European Union and United Nations, and an important influence in its own time on both Rousseau and Kant. A fundamental text in the study of both modern and Enlightenment attitudes towards war. The existence of such translations of Saint-Pierre's work is significant: the scheme depended on wide adoption by the sovereigns of Europe, and the present translation suggests that some in England were prepared to take the Abbé's suggestions seriously. Saint-Pierre himself was evidently aware of this translation, as acknowledged in a letter from him appended to the end of the work, dated April 14, 1714. The translator, however, remains unidentified. The Abbé proposed the creation of a central… Read More

The prospectus outlines the reason for the proposed safe harbor, noting that storms in the North Sea have claimed numerous lives.
