Melbourne & Sydney: Lothian Book Publishing Co, 1917. First Edition. Australian author, Tarella Quin (1877 -1934) began her literary career writing children's books in collaboration with the celebrated artist, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Quin published her first book with Outhwaite in 1910 - Gum Tree Brownie and Other Faerie Folk of the Never-Never - embarking later into the world of romantic outback fiction for adults. 'Nelia's beauty was spoilt by her mutinous discontent with a fate that had chosen to send them bad seasons when she was just at the age to burst from bush-girl chrysalis into a butterfly. It robbed her tilted mouth of gaity, and put storm into a pair of the most glorious grey-blue eyes that ever girl possessed.' (Chapter 1, Paying Guests ). Finely reasoned essay on poetry venturing from the songs of the Navajo to a lengthy discussion on Chinese poems and Wordsworth. 'It is not necessary that culture bring about the death of poetry, as it did in the Rome of Virgil. The cynics are wrong who see in our future no place for an art which belongs, they say, to the childhood of the race. New York: Collins and Hannay, 1838. First Edition. With nine maps and seventy-five engravings, principally for the use of schools. Uncommon New York-printed children's text book with a section on New Holland and an engraving of the bread fruit. ‘To this place the English government send thieves, and other bad people, from England. It is a vast distance from England, and being sent to Botany Bay is esteemed a very severe punishment.' Samuel Griswold Goodrich, the entrepreneurial figure behind the Peter Parley series, published over one hundred educational titles on geography, history and science. Not in Ferguson, but known from a copy in the Mitchell Library. Square duodecimo, multiple engravings; original printed boards with old leather backstrip repair, a bit shaken,several pages loosened, fair.

Providence, R.I. Boston: W.E. BARRETT & CO, 1885. Collection of Victoria postcards advertising lawn mowers: Buckeye, Excelsior, Philadelphia; featuring a man in a boater hat tending the grounds of a stately home; and children dressed like grownups in their late 19th century finery, supporting the idea that children were seen as miniature adults. Duodecimo, five printed cards in lovely original condition, one duplicate card has a dash of hand colouring, otherwise fine.

Beautiful photograph of the Society of Artists selection committee having a picnic on the floor of the art gallery in 1907 picturing (from left to right) Julian Ashton, Mrs Norman Lindsay, Harry Weston, Will Dyson, Norman Lindsay, Young Souter, Sydney Long, and D.H. Souter. The panel of watercolours on the wall was the first ever exhibited by J.J. Hilder. Houndsditch: Bishop & Co, 1830. First Edition. A delightful woodcut alphabet. Here are many favourites - the Fox, the Goose, and the Lamb - but where necessary, the publisher's evidently felt capable of stretching their young audience. Significantly, it includes a 'K' for Kangaroo, revealing how wide-spread and how quickly the appetite for exotic natural history from Australia and the South Pacific had grown. There are also more unusual inclusions such as 'I' for Ibex, and even 'M' for Mermaid. Sadly, inspiration only went so far; here, X is for the Letter X. The work also includes a child's ditty: "When school is done, g[o] home loiter not on the wa[y] / Come to school clean and play not by the way.". Duodecimo, 12 pp. in total, woodcut illustrations throughout; original green printed wrappers, folded (not sewn) as issued, just lightly chipped at head of front.

London: Oxford University Press, 1954. First Edition. HUTTON, Clarke. First edition of this charming autolithographed children's book. English artist and illustrator, Stanley Clarke Hutton (1898 - 1984) studied and taught lithography lithography Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. Between 1945 and 1962, Hutton illustrated many books for children including picture histories of Britain, France, Canada, Italy, Australia, America, Russia and India. Hutton's books are marvellously redolent of the period and have considerable visual and nostalgic impact as well as being fascinating sociologically for their view of the history of the various subjects. All illustrations are drawn directly onto the plate by Hutton. Each of Hutton's books is written by a different author. Quarto, bound in stylish decorated boards, 44 pp, 8 full-page coloured illustrations with many black and white illustrations throughout, a near fine copy in the original dustwraper. Beautiful art deco picture book written and illustrated by Gwen White. "The dolls in this book are all real ones, and they have been drawn either from those in the Museums or elsewhere. They vary in size from the little black Congo Doll which is five inches high, to the grand one in the purple dress and straw bonnet, which is quite three feet high. They are all dolls which children have played with, and are not the kind used as idols or puppets. In most cases they are dressed in the costumes of the period to which they belong, so the frocks would be splendid for fancy dress parties.
