1632 1ed Gyllius Thracio Constantinople Byzantine Elzevier TURKEY Bosporus
The best edition of Gyllius!

Petrus Gyllius was a French natural scientist from the 16th-century whose works ranged from topographical to studying about fish of the Mediterranean Sea. According to Blackmer, Gyllius works are
"among the earliest works to describe Constantinople and the Thracian Bosphorus. They provided authentic and reliable sources of information for early travelers."

This first Elzevier edition of Gyllius's 'Bosporo Thracio' is the first book written on the Bosporus, or the Strait of Istanbul. It provides a detailed account of the history of Istanbul as well as an in-depth look at Byzantine archaeology.

1649 Palaephatus On Incredible Things Greek Mythology Miracles Dragons Elzevier
'On Incredible Things' is a collection of ancient Greek myths written by Palaephatus. While no record of an author named Palaephatus ever lived, scholars are unable to properly identify the true author of these myths. Each of the sections of this work describe an amazing feat of Greek mythology followed by a statement of believability or authenticity. The work is filled with accounts of miracles, monsters and dragons, and mythical creatures, and much more. Interestingly, there is little mention of Greek gods making them more human than god-like.
This 1649 edition of Palaephatus was published by the famed Dutch publishing company Elzevier. Edited and translated into Latin by Cornelius Tollius.

1854 World Panorama America INDIANS Hunting GOLD Australia Arabia China Africa

William Pinnock's 'Panorama of the Old Word and the New' was written to give a 'living picture' of the countries of the world as they were in the 1850s. Pinnock sought to achieve this by including information on what he deemed as most important – boundaries, political condition, manners, customs, peculiarities, modes of life, and an occasional look at history for Europe, Asia, America (North and South) and Africa. Pinnock makes use of excellent illustrators to bring the panorama to life with engravings of animals, hunting, Native Americans, gold digging in Australia, and a myriad of costumes, scenes, and portraits of places and peoples.

This 1854 edition is embellished with several hundred engravings from designs of Croome, Devereux, and other distinguished artists!

Description:
1711 Paradise Lost John Milton Poetry Tonson English Thomas Newton Illustrated

"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven."
― John Milton, Paradise Lost

'Paradise Lost' follows the biblical story of the Fall of Man and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Milton himself states that purpose for this book was to "Justify the ways of God to Men". It covers the characters Adam, Eve, and Satan, and the roles each played in the development of religious culture and idolatry.

It was critically acclaimed and well-received by many famed personalities, including Samuel Johnson who states.
"[Paradise Lost shows] Milton's peculiar power to astonish…and he seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was the Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful.

1775 Paradise Lost John Milton + Paradise Regained Allegory Poetry 2v SET

"The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven."
― John Milton, Paradise Lost

'Paradise Lost' follows the biblical story of the Fall of Man and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Milton himself states that purpose for this book was to "Justify the ways of God to Men". It covers the characters Adam, Eve, and Satan and the roles each played in the development of religious culture and idolatry.
