London: Printed for J. Clarke at the Golden Ball in Duck-Lane, and J. Brotherton at the Bible next the Fleece-Tavern in Cornhill, 1728. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary black morocco (rebacked, corners discreetly repaired, endpapers renewed), the boards tooled in panels with attractive ornaments. The contents are in fine condition with the occasional minor stain and a few trivial faults: tiny hole in leaf F1, pale dampstain to lvs. K3-5, a slightly darker one to leaf L1; two small holes and alight stain to leaf N8. A few small stains to the engraved frontispiece of Bunyan dreaming. Pt. II has its own title page, dated 1727. A fine copy of this illustrated edition of Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress", one of the most famous English allegories and the Puritan conversion narrative par excellence. In response to the proliferation of poorly-printed editions of the book, the publishers of this edition aspired to present the work "in a handsome manner", on heavy paper and illustrated with new…
