New York: Harper's Weekly, 1867. Original wood engraving by Winslow Homer. Image: 9 1/8 inches by 13 3/4 inches; Sheet: 11 inches by 16 inches. This first (only) impression was printed in Harper's Weekly, November 23, 1867. Both the woodblock and the electrotype plate were destroyed after the engraving was printed. Winslow Homer decided to pursue an artistic career early on and apprenticed himself to the Boston lithographer John H. Bufford when he was 19 years old. This was his only training before he became a professional illustrator when he was 21. Homer was largely a self-taught artist, something that gave him a fresh, independent eye that distinguished him from more academically trained artists. He became a freelance artist for the weekly illustrated magazines, such as Harper's Weekly, and he moved to New York to be at the center of this world. New York: New Directions, 1946. 1946-1958. First printings of the first editions of all five books in the long poem to which Williams devoted so much of his later life. Each of Books I-IV were editions limited to 1,000 copies; Book V was limited to 3,000 copies. Seldom found as a complete set! The books are clean and tight, with light dusting of the top edges and some foxing along the top edge of the cloth only on Book Five. Two volumes have a previous owner's name written very neatly on a front endpaper, and one has a bookplate on the front endpaper. Pages are lightly toned (especially Book One) and more so on the endpapers. Pages edges are toned. The dust jackets for Books 1-4 are clean and attractive with some light tanning, mostly along the spines. The jacket for Book Five presents well but has moderate foxing, a couple of tiny chips, and one 1 1/4" closed tear at the bottom of the rear panel. London: Richard and John E. Taylor, 1837. Original antique print drawn and lithographed by Elizabeth Gould after a rough sketch by John Gould. Original hand coloring. Image is 14 3/4 inches by 9 inches on a sheet that is 21 inches by 14 1/2 inches. This print from Gould's magnum opus on European birds is unusual in that it displays the hanging pear-shaped nest that is the basis for the bird's common name. London: William S. Orr & Co., 1848. This is not a complete book--it is a single sheet containing an original antique hand-colored botanical print. Joseph Paxton was perhaps the most significant 19th century English botanist, the designer of the famed Crystal Palace, and the editor of Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants. This print is from the 14th volume of that magazine, published in 1848. Drawn and lithographed by Samuel Holden, it is a superb brilliantly-colored example of the flowers in the magazine. The bronze highlights serve to fool the eye into seeing actual scales on the fish. Marcus Éliéser Bloch (17231799) was a German physician whose interest in natural history led him to become the foremost expert on icthyology (fish) of his time. Based upon his travels and his own extensive collection of specimens, he published the monumental illustrated book Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische (the French edition titled Ichthyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière des Poissons).
