1981. Gorey, Edward. Measures 23 by 15 1/2 inches. Signed by Gorey in the lower right corner. Text contains lineup for the first season of the long-running PBS series, which is described here as "So entertaining -- it's criminal". Color illustration contains various elements from the opening sequence which Gorey designed, at the center of a tombstone decorated with skeletons in various attitudes. In a black metal frame. Poster adhered to glass along top edge, else fine.

(Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1999. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Large quarto. 6ff., accordion-fold. One of thirty-eight copies on handmade paper, signed by the artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. In contrast to his previous work, 15 Kyoto Gardens, Kaldewey focuses on the phenomenon of Japan's gambling halls and Pachinko parlors. This was the first book of the Kaldewey Press to utilize the technology of the computer, Photoshop, and an Epson printer, in creating the color illustrations. With an accompanying audio CD of the background noises of voices, coins, and music found in a Pachinko arcade. Mint in chemise and slipcase. (von Lucius, pp. 102-103).

Tallarico, Tony. Original artwork, signed by the artist, Tony Tallarico. Depicting the letters A, B, and C against an orange background, this vibrant piece juxtaposes the realistic style of the letter examples (an apple, a ball, and a cat) with the playful style of the letters themselves, which have been enhanced by black outlines painted onto the inside of the frame glass. The letters evoke the typography of comic books; this is no accident since Tallarico spent much of his career as a comic book artist. He is particularly known for being the artist behind "The Great Society" comic book, published by Parallax, which satirized the administration of Lyndon Baines Johnson, and the short-lived series "Lobo" of Dell Comics, the first comic with an African-American to headline his or her own series. Tallarico later went on to illustrate hundreds of children's books, including the Where Are They? series. Fine in a gilt frame. (Frame measures 25 1/2 by 23 in.; 648x584mm).

An advertising poster for artist Jerry Pallotta's alphabet books, measuring 24 1/2 by 19 1/4 inches (622x489mm) and showing the full cover for "The Extinct Alphabet Book," published in 1993. A list of other titles is below. Illustrated by Ralph Masiello. Minor edgewear, and one corner creased, not affecting main image. Together with: "Butterfly Alphabet." Fairfax, VA, Sandved & Coleman Photography, (n.d.). An alphabetic poster measuring 24 by 18 inches (609x457mm) depicting photographs of each letter of the alphabet and the numerals 0-9 found naturally on the wings of butterflies. This project by Norwegian naturalist Kjell Bloch Sandved took over 24 years to complete. Title and signature printed in gold at the bottom. Very fine.

Cincinnati: Mosaic Press, 1990. Campbell, Claire. (64)pp. Signed by the printer, Miriam Irwin. With black & white illustrations by Claire Campbell. Examines the evolution of the paisley pattern, beginning with its roots in Kashmir and Scotland. Extremely fine in red cloth with a gilt-stamped paisley pattern on front and spine. (15/16 by 3/4; 24x19mm).

(Wales), 1980. Jones, Shirley. Print measuring 20 by 17 inches. One of 50 copies. A delicate eight-pointed star radiates light, in shades of blue and tan. Signed by the artist. A renowned Welsh book artist, Jones has dedicated herself to the art of printing both words and images. With a blue mat, slightly faded to edges, measuring 26 by 22 inches. Very fine.

NY: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1982. First American edition. Signed by Ishiguro on title page. This is his first book, which introduces his quasi-surrealist style, here aptly applied to the generational trauma instigated by the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Bound in quarter turquoise cloth with white paper over boards. Mild edgewear, else fine in a lightly creased near fine dust jacket with a tiny closed tear at upper front panel.

London: Faber and Faber, 1982. First edition. This copy with the stamp of Ishiguro's literary agent, Deborah Rogers Ltd., on the front flyleaf. Ishiguro's first novel, a meditation on the lasting trauma of a post-bomb Nagasaki. Full pale blue cloth over boards, gilt titling to spine. Slight soiling and bumps to corners. Typical light sunning to dust wrapper. A near fine copy in a near fine wrapper.

1926. Gaskin, Arthur. A woodcut print on Japanese paper of a woman, fitted out in frock and hat, in white figure against a black background. Signed, titled, and dated in pencil by Gaskin. Few spots of inconsequential foxing, else near fine. (Image measures 4 13/16 by 2 3/8 in.; 122x60 mm).

A deluxe catalogue for the French automaker Panhard & Levassor illustrated with bright color plates depicting their latest models, mounted on pages of heavy tan card. On the facing pages are dramatic views of famous French locales by Georges Dorival, the renowned poster artist. Dorival is best known for his travel posters, and, in the same fashion, these illustrations are meant to inspire the viewer to tour the coastal highways of Provence or the mountain passes of the Pyrenees in the luxurious new Panhard & Levassor automobile. A full-page spread in yellow and sepia depicts the chassis and engine of a vehicle, with classical columns and vines in the background, and another sepia image shows a celebratory drive on the Champs-Élysées in the very first Panhard & Levassor, which was built in 1891. (Paris: Chez Guérin-Muller et Ce, 1860. Oblong 24mo. Six panels presented accordionfold, with a seventh used as cover artwork. Each panel shows a different facet of soldierhood, all of it very debonair and civilized, from "Avant le Revue [Before Reveille]" to "La Cuisine [The Kitchen]" to "Le Carousel," in which soldiers compete in militaristic sports. Each scene at its head displays a title, and at its foot a descriptive caption. The only suggestion of disturbance is in the cover panel—"La Rosse, Le Rossard et le Factionnaire"—in which a lone upstart on a mule has to be threatened by an infantryman's bayonet. Some the panels flow together in a contiguous scene, and some do not. This, paired with the varying points where panels were glued together, the separation of a single panel as cover art, and the use of an alphabet as front paste-down, complicate speculation of the publication's true format. Cumberland, MD: Hobby House Press, 1986. Oblong quarto. 236pp. This is an out-of-print, invaluable reference for any collector of children's material. Illustrated throughout with color and black & white photographs, Whitton's informative text is both thorough and accurate, with a superb index. Although primarily a reference for paper toys and games, this book is often a source for information on book publishers and printers not found in the standard children's book reference library. Extremely fine and long out of print.

Santa Cruz: Good Book Press, 1988. Thomas, Peter & Donna. (33)pp. One of 150 copies. A nonsense rhyme, illustrated with photographs of the printer, Peter Thomas, at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Printed by letterpress on Peter's handmade paper, with five samples of his handmade papers tipped-in. Fine in lilac colored boards. (2 15/16 by 1 15/16; 75x49mm.).

NY: Pynson Printers, 1939. Quarto. 134pp. One of 370 copies, signed by Hunter and by Elmer Adler, the printer. Contains 85 photogravure illustrations, many from photographs taken by Hunter, and twenty-seven paper samples tipped-in. In this companion to his "Papermaking Pilgrimage to Japan, Korea and China," Dard Hunter highlights the difficulties particular to papermaking in India, warning, "the handmade paper industry of India will be a thing of the past within ten years. British officials in India do not encourage the making of paper by hand, for every ream so made naturally diminishes the revenue from imported paper." Bound in boards covered with colorful Indian hand-blocked tapestry, backed in black leather with gilt title set off by blue rules. Few scuffs to spine, else a near fine copy with prospectus and original paper slipcase.

Santa Cruz, CA: Peter & Donna Thomas, 1995. Thomas, Donna. 54pp. One of 100 copies. Each chapter opens with an enlarged initial, which has been decorated with elements from the Thomas's travels in Africa. In boards covered with handmade brown paper that has been printed with a zebra pattern. When opened, the front cover folds down to reveal a decorative, stab-bound binding. Printed on one side only on handmade paper that has a subtle brown and white zebra stripe design on the verso. Carefully tucked into a pocket in the front cover are two samples of handmade paper from Zimbabwe and South Africa. This fascinating account describes a trip the Thomas family took to the two countries in order to meet with local artisans and teach workshops on papermaking, printing, and book binding. (Santa Cruz, CA): Peter & Donna Thomas, 1999. Thomas, Peter and Donna. One of forty-two copies. Five sheets, each one wrapped around a dowel that when twisted reveals the text printed on the underside. Thus the reader can read the first words of Dante's quotation - "Paradise: nature, stardust, music & romance" - and then flip each dowel in turn to show the remainder: "...for not only in my eyes is paradise." Dowels and sheets set into wood frame, which is housed between boards covered in paper repeatedly printed with "Paradise." Trace rubs to corners, else fine. (Measures 2 3/4 by 2 in.; 70x51 mm).

San Francisco: Herbert and Peter Fahey, 1940. Pearce, George C.. Octavo. (21)pp. One of 50 copies, signed by Herbert and Peter Fahey below the colophon. Frontispiece illustration by George C. Pearce. With six vellum and two parchment samples tipped-in. Beautifully printed within a border of blue lines and with opening initials of blue, highlighted with silver. A fine copy bound in vellum with gilt-rule decoration. Hint of wear to original slipcase of blue boards with spine label. A rare sample book with a marvelous essay on the history and uses of vellum.

Paris: Gruel Engelmann, 1889. Gruel, Léon. Three 12mo. vols, each a distinct copy of Engelmann's production; one from the 1870 first issue, and two from the later 1889 issues. (iv), 628; (xii), 649, (ii); (vi), 649, (2)pp. Two- and three-line initials, woodcut illustrations in the fashion of medieval religious imagery, and, in only the 1889 copies, chromolithographs inserted as plates ornament this French parishoner's handbook to Catholic rites. As a set, they are a case study in the evolution of a book. The 1870 issuance has no plates and no separate page for its colophon, and the printer, Jouaust, is locate on Rue St-Honore; the earlier 1889 issuance has one plate, an additional twenty pages, a longer index, a colophon on a separate page, and Jouaust has apparently moved to Rue de Lille; the later 1889 issuance has the additional pages, extended index, distinct colophon, and new address, as well as a dozen or so more color plates.
