Part I offered here includes five albumen prints mounted to boards, of "Orators, Statesmen, Authors, Novelists, Artists, Philosophers.".Each of the five mounted photographs is preceded by a protective sheet of tissue paper in tact though wrinkled. The five photographs show a group of luminaries in the following fields: "Politicians Conservative," "Politicians Liberal," "Authors and Novelists," including Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Thomas Carlyle, "Science," including Charles Wheatstone, Michael Faraday, "Artists" including J. M. W. Turner, John Everett Millais, and Edwin Landseer. The page preceding the last group photograph of English Artists indicated that a second volume was anticipated "early in 1877." The artists' page has separated from the spine as has the first copyright page which is chipped along margins, creased and missing upper left corner. A compelling albumen photograph painted to highlight the youthful face, hands and neck of a 19th century woman. Light ruffles around the neck and wrists also highlight her jewelry as well as her rather severe long sleeved, high neck dark dress. Something about the image evokes Nathaniel Hawthorne. The 6.5 by 8 inch albumen print is attached to a 7 by 8.5 hard board that has darkened and dried with age. The photograph may have been heavily painted with oils. Condition: since the paint is of uneven thickness it creates both a shimmery effect in good light as well as a sheen in a scan that creates the effect of fading. The board does show chipping along the edges slightly affecting the upper and lower corners of the photograph; tape residue on verso. Autograph

Marx signed the Feb. 22 check to "Coachella Valley S & L" for $375 and the May 30 check to "So. Calif. Edison" for $50.30. Both checks signed, "Zeppo Marx," and both are yellow on the front and green on verso. Slight crimping to top of one check. Endorsement and cancellation markings show on verso of both checks. The image of Gilded Age Bloomingdale's store is printed on this 1896 letterhead invoice. The 1892 invoice lists the items sold in the store including "Dry Goods, Cloaks...Fancy Goods" furniture and carpets. Pictured on verso, is "The ‘Elvira Corset'" with an explanation of its preferred appeal. The ad announced that Bloomingdale's sold the corset in the US, Canada and Mexico. Both invoices note the store's current location, "Third Ave - 59th & 60th Sts." Condition: Both invoices are in overall good condition. The 1892 invoice appears to have been slightly cropped at top edge which has been lightly reinforced on verso wtih mounting reside remaining. Patchen hand painted the front and back covers so that each edition of Panels for the Walls of Heaven is unique. On the back cover he penned and signed, "This Edition is Limited to one hundred and fifty Numbered & Signed Copies with Covers Decorated by the Author. THREE. Kenneth Patchen." On the inside back cover in green, he has written, "no two covers alike. Copy 3." Printed by the "gillick press, berkeley," 67 numbered pages. The top and side of the pages are painted a maroon red. A cellophane sheet protects the painted covers including the inside back cover. Some aging visible to the light inside covers, otherwise fine. Panels for the Wall of Heaven is an example of the painted poetry Patchen, a self taught poet, created. Over his active career he wrote on many themes. He incorporated music into his poetry, reading his poetry to jazz in the 1950's and collaborating with John Cage. Autograph

Original Signed Drawing of Gumby, in pencil, honoring the American Flag, on a First Day Cover 1985. Clokey has drawn his beloved character Gumby saying "I [love drawn with a heart] USA." The First Day Cover shows the American flag behind the capital building with two red, white and blue stamps. To the right, Clokey has signed in full, "Art Clokey." A delightfully patriotic drawing framed in red, white and dark blue triple mat, in black wood frame and conservation glass. A charming, patriotic presentation. Autograph

Rare Photography Advertising Broadside for a Parisian photography studio operated by Allophones Lionel who was active in the 1860s (according to Getty Images). Lionel advertises a guarantee that no photographer had offered: a proof - "epreuve" - of the image before the photograph is printed, and if the client does not like the image, the photographer will take a second photograph and offer a second proof for no additional charge. A caricature of the famed French photographer Nadar appears to sit on a camera in the broadside's highly decorative design. The sheet measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and is normally aged with slight chip in upper left corner, else very good condition. Photographs of individuals in the carte-de-vi site style established in the 1850's became more popular in the 1860's with many photographers competing for clients. This richly designed broadside must have appealed to new customers. We have not found another example of this broadside. Autograph

This is a great photograph of Capra, in his late middle age. He is seated on stage, probably at a lecture or panel discussion of some kind, because he is miked. He is wearing a light turtleneck shirt and dark jacket with handkerchief in pocket. He is smiling broadly out to the audience, his face crinkled with laughter . He has signed in full in the upper left portion on light background. Autograph

The black and white glossy photograph by "The News" captures Eisenhower in academic robes, when he was President of Columbia University, and Bourke-White also in academic robes on the day they each received honorary degrees from Rutgers: the future U. S. President for Doctor of Laws, and renown World War II photographer for Doctor of Letters. The explanation of the photograph is docketed on verso. Trim lines visible with notations on verso. Condition: Bends at corner tips, cracking at lower left corner and throughout visible under light. During the Second World War he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944-45. After the war, he served as President of Columbia University, and in 1951, he became the first supreme commander of NATO. As a photographer for "Life Magazine," Margaret Bourke-White was the first female photographer to serve with the US armed forces covering World War II.… Read More

Robeson is shown in bust length close up. With black ink, he signs in full, "Paul Robeson." Docketed on verso, "5th October 1933." A fine image of one of America's most important multi-talented stars of both stage and screen. Robeson took a strong stand on black civil rights but was also suspected of being a Communist. The latter hurt his reputation in the 1950's. Condition: Fine image; on verso slight ink stains on lower portion. Autograph

Publicity Photograph in color signed, measuring 8 x 10 inches. The bright half length photograph shows Miranda costumed as she often performed and is best remembered. Inscribed and signed vertically in black ink, "To... Carmen Miranda." Condition: Bends at corners and along margins, overall condition slight background discoloration in several spots. Autograph

The iconic comedian is shown seated, holding a cigar in his raised left hand. He has inscribed, "To...The Statler-Hilton and Sheraton of the wooded dells. We extend our thanks for a lovely week..." He signs with traditional, "Groucho." The photograph is stamped on verso, "NBC photo by Elmer Holloway." Holloway was an NBC photographer. Groucho's writing has slightly faded. This is a black-and-white publicity photo of Kirk Douglas and George Hamilton as combatants in a dramatic still from MGM's "Two Weeks in Another Town", directed by Vincente Minnelli. It shows Douglas on the telephone, and Hamilton behind him holding a knife to his neck. Douglas has a long scar on his right cheek. A campy, though serious looking picture, it is inscribed near the bottom in black pen on light background, "Kirk Douglas For Judith '88". It is ready for presentation. Autograph

Referring to his role as Bigger in Orson Welles' 1941 stage production of Richard Wright's novel, "Native Son," Lee has signed and inscribed this fine sepia toned photograph, "To my sister Helen Martin From her brother 'Bigger' Canada Lee." Helen Martin (1910-2000) was an African-American actress who appeared in film and television as well as on stage. Her films include "Hollywood Shuffle," "Cotton Comes to Harlem," "Repo Man," and "Bulworth." She also appeared in the television series, "Roots," and other shows. Savage was influenced by her uncle,  artist Man Ray, and studied with photographer, Berenice Abbott.  She inscribed her photo collage of a dollar bill to photography gallery owner Lee Witkin.  Her inscription reads, "For Lee Witkin - my favorite money-maker - Naomi Savage, 1972." Publicity photograph, silver gelatin print, featuring the great jazz musician holding his trumpet and measuring 8 x 10 inches. Armstrong inscribed and signed his smiling image, "Best Wishes to June from Louis Armstrong." "Direction Joe Glaser, RCA Building...New York" is printed on lower margin. Joseph G. Glaser (1896 - 1969) who managed the careers of several jazz musicians and singers including Billie Holiday became Armstrong's manager in 1935. Armstrong, also known Satchmo, gained importance in the 1920s as an innovative cornet and trumpet player as well as an improvisational jazz singer. His popularity and importance continued throughout his lifetime. Condition: slight crimping to lower left corner and slight browning at upper margin. Autograph

Lachaise writes to writer and critic Gilbert Seldes. In part: "I am sending to you a copy of the Bath Time with quotation of your N. Yorker article on me. I am sorry that I will have to leave all the little lamb (sic) of Maine to return to wicked N.Y. in a few days....."
