Benton and how it was ended when Benton’s life was saved by a twist of fate after a cannon exploded during a firing exhibition on board the vessel Princeton. Benton felt the hand of God in the sparing of his life and one day he sent word to Webster to join him and his wife for dinner at their home. As bitter a pill as it was for him to swallow, Webster joined them, the two men thence becoming fast friends for the reminder of their lives. Later, Webster performed a like kindness for another, illustrating the chain of events set in motion by acts of goodness.
