London: Jonathan Cape, 1934. 1st Edition 4th Printing. Hardcover. Good. First edition, fourth impression. Hardback, bound in the original green cloth with gilt titling to spine. 23 × 15cm, 402pp. This copy belonged to James Lees-Milne, and has been signed by him to the ffep, as well as having his bookplate to the front pastedown. James Lees-Milne was an architectural historian and played an important part in the acquisition of properties for the National Trust after the Second World War. He was also a novelist but became best known for his witty, waspish and extensive diaries which were published over twelve volumes. A well-regarded biographical study of Queen Elizabeth I by a noted authority on the Elizabethan age. Condition: Good condition. The green cloth boards are a little rubbed and bumped, but the contents are in good condition with just a little tanning to the prelims. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1865. Assumed first Edition. . Half Leather. Good. Assumed first US edition. Hardback, in a half-leather binding with gilt titling and five raised bands to the spine. Marbled paper covered boards and marbled edges (faint). 20.5 × 14cm, 543pp. This copy was given to American soprano Clara Louise Kellogg in December 1964. The inscription reads "Miss Kellogg from Fordyce Barker, Xmas 1864". Kellogg (1842-1916) was the first US-born prima donna, and in the early 1860s was making her name as Marguerite in the New York premiere of Charles Gounod's Faust. Dr Fordyce Barker (1818-1891) was a well-known New York physician who was at the Bellevue Hospitals in New York in the 1860s. Paperback. 23 × 15cm, 24pp. This is a verbatim shorthand report of A J Balfour's Romanes Lecture delivered in the Sheldonian Theatre, November 24, 1909. It was rewritten and republished in 1910 as 'Criticism and Beauty'. Condition: The covers are in poor condition with creasing to the fore-edge and the spine is torn for the lower 8cm. The contents however are in good plus condition, and perfectly readable with clean pages (bar a little age-toning), and the inner binding is secure.

Bruxelles: Artes, 1937. Assumed first Edition. . Hardback. Good. Assumed first edition, hardback, quarter cloth with printed titling to upper board. 37 × 24.5cm, 95pp. Text in French and Dutch. A rare Belgian hardware and tool trade catalogue of household metalware and fittings, and what makes this one so attractive is where the item is brass, it is printed in gilt, and the silver printed in silver etc. Condition: Generally good condition, there is rubbing and bumping to the covers and occasional pencil annotation by a prospective buyer but the pages are clean, if a little age-toned. Small area of top corner of title page torn off. The inner binding is secure but there is wear to the hinges.
