The text represents, in part, Schwezoff's "personal ideas of what is good in the art of the dance." Schwezoff (1904-1982) studied in Leningrad before leaving the Soviet Union in 1930, spending the ensuing decade in Europe performing with a number of companies; he migrated to the United States in 1940, became a citizen in 1945, and taught in New York or Washington until his death.
