Description:
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1930. First edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITIONS OF RUTHERFORD'S SEMINAL TEXTS ON RADIOACTIVITY; FROM THE WORKING LIBRARY OF JOHN COCKCROFT. Nobel laureate Ernest Rutherford won the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work on radioactivity, work introduced to the world in the present first editions of Radio-Activity (1904) and Radiations from Radioactive Substances (1930). It was this research that was later extended by his research assistant John Cockcroft, who himself received the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for artificially accelerating atomic particles and splitting the atom. When Winston Churchill, having visited MIT in the US after stepping down from the political arena, envisaged a new science-centric research centre for the UK, one individual stood out as an obvious choice to lead the new college in its formative years. Sir John Cockcroft was appointed by the Crown as the first Master of Churchill College, Cambridge - a new constituent of… Read More

Description:
Paris: Chez Brunot-Labbe, 1817. First edition. contemporary morocco over marbled boards. Very Good. EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST WESTERN BOOK ON BUDDHISM. "Although the Western encounter with Asia's largest religion may be the vastest and most consequential spiritual encounter in human history, its protagonists and historical development are still barely known. Thus it comes as no surprise that even specialists have hitherto failed to appreciate the earliest Western book about Buddhism: Michel-Jean-François Ozeray's Recherches sur Buddou ou Bouddou, instituteur religieux de l'Asie orientale (Paris, 1817)... "... Ozeray's book represents a landmark in the history of the Western discovery of Buddhism. Published three years after the establishment of Europe's first academic chairs for indology and sinology and just before the organized academic study of Buddhist texts began, Ozeray's reliance on images and reports by embassies and European residents in Asian countries rather than… Read More

Description:
Stockholm: Norstedt. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS, of Arrhenius's landmark discovery of the theory of electrolytic disassociation. Arrhenius was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation." By 1880, "it was known that solutions of certain compounds conduct electricity and that chemical reactions could occur when a current was passed. It was thought that the current decomposed the substance. In 1883 Arrhenius proposed a theory that substances were partly converted into an active form when dissolved. The active part was responsible for conductivity. In the case of acids and bases, he correlated the strength with the degree of decomposition on solution. This work was published as Reserches sur la conductibilite galvanique des electrolytes (1884; Researches on the Electrical Conductivity of Electrolytes) and… Read More

Paris: IN: Mémoirs de L'Académie des Sciences de L'Institut de France, Typographie de Firmin-Didot, 1903. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of Becquerel's "definitive work", containing the full account of his investigations and discovery of radioactivity. PMM 393. Dibner 163. "In 1896, [Bequerel's] previous work was overshadowed by his discovery of the phenomenon of natural radioactivity. Following a discussion with Henri Poincaré on the radiation which had recently been discovered by Röntgen (X-rays) and which was accompanied by a type of phosphorescence in the vacuum tube, Becquerel decided to investigate whether there was any connection between X-rays and naturally occurring phosphorescence. He had inherited from his father a supply of uranium salts, which phosphoresce on exposure to light. When the salts were placed near to a photographic plate covered with opaque paper, the plate was discovered to be fogged. The phenomenon was found to be common to all the uranium salts… Read More

Boston: Edes and Gill, 1761. First edition. uncut and sewn; custom box. Very Good. VERY RARE FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST PUBLICLY FUNDED AMERICAN SCIENCE EXPEDITION: JOHN WINTHROP'S VOYAGE TO NEWFOUNDLAND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE INTERNATIONAL EFFORT TO TIME THE 1761 TRANSIT OF VENUS AND THUS DETERMINE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE EARTH AND THE SUN. WITH THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF HIS SUBSEQUENT LECTURES ON THE TRANSIT OF VENUS. Transits of Venus and Their Importance: By chance, the Sun is about 400 times larger in diameter than the Moon, and about 400 times farther from the Earth. As a result, the two bodies have roughly the same apparent size; and on the rare occasions when the Moon is located directly between the Sun and Earth, the Sun is blotted out, with only its corona visible - thus, a total eclipse. Other objects in the solar system do not have such a precisely calibrated relationship between their size and distance from the Earth, and as a result when they pass between the Earth and… Read More

Description:
Memphis: Hutton & Freligh. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST REVISED EDITION, MEMPHIS ISSUE. The 1861 edition was issued in Memphis, Philadelphia and New York; no priority has been established. Commissioned by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, William Hardee's Light Infantry Tactics modernized American infantry drill, allowing for nimbler, faster-paced battle movements. Though Hardee was a Confederate general, both Confederate and Union armies used Hardee's manual during the Civil War. This copy bears the ownership inscription of Isaac Howard, a Confederate soldier whose extensive correspondence with his father is an important primary source for military historians of the Civil War. The "Howard Papers" are part of the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Memphis: Hutton & Freligh, 1861. 2 vols in 1, as issued. Octavo, original cloth back boards, original label on front cover, with 58 lithographs (complete).… Read More

Description:
Paris: G.L.M., 1939. First edition. Half-morocco, wrappers bound-in. Very Good. FIRST EDITION: A REMARKABLE ASSOCIATION COPY. INSCRIBED BY DUCHAMP TO HIS GOOD FRIEND AND ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF SURREALISM, PAUL ÉLUARD. Inscribed in ink on the half-title: "Cher Eluard / Marcel Duchamp" Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) used his female alter ego Rrose Sélavy as the "author" for many of his most audacious works, including this collection of aphorisms. As an artist, Duchamp is associated with Dadaism, Cubism, and Surrealism though he resisted group affiliations. Instead, he focused on art that served the mind rather than art that pleased the eye. Dividing his time between New York and Europe, he was also an accomplished chess player, a prankster, and a writer. He especially enjoyed experimenting with verbal punning, which he viewed as a source of inspiration and humor. In addition to working with his contemporaries in the Dada and Surrealism circles, Duchamp had a seminal influence on younger Pop artists… Read More
