Southampton: Kingfisher Railway Productions, 1988. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small mark to front endpaper) with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. (The ISBN number printed of 0946184488 refers to another book and the one used is the correct number) For 70 years the Lewes to East Grinstead line led a quet existence, serving isolated farming communities which typify the Sussex Weald. When traffic declined and closure was imminent, the legality of the closure was challenged in 1955 by a local resident and British Railways were forced to re-open the line. When the route finally closed railway enthusiasts joined forces with local inhabitants to 'preserve the puffer for posterity', and they eventually reopened the five mile section from Sheffield Park to Horsted Keynes in August 1960 - called the Bluebell Railway, after the wild flowers which decorate the lineside in spring. This book is a pictorial history of the Lewes-East Grinstead route from its opening in 1882… Read More

London: Profile, 2015. A near Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket which is not price clipped. First Edition, First Printing. 645 pages. 31 photographs and illustrations throughout in the text. Britain's railways have been a vital part of national life for nearly 200 years. Transforming lives and landscapes, they have left their mark on everything from timekeeping to tourism. As a self-contained world governed by distinctive rules and traditions, the network also exerts a fascination all its own. From the classical grandeur of Newcastle station to the ceaseless traffic of Clapham Junction, from the mysteries of Brunel's atmospheric railway to the lost routines of the great marshalling yards, Simon Bradley explores the world of Britain's railways, the evolution of the trains, and the changing experiences of passengers and workers. The Victorians' private compartments, railway rugs and footwarmers have made way for air-conditioned carriages with airline-type seating, but the railways… Read More

London: Hutchinson, 1987. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped.ix + 241 pages. 53 illustrations. The book is very different to the usual book of theatrical memoirs and draws on a special part of her working life. In 1983 Sheila Hancock was invited to become an Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, so becoming only the second woman ever to be appointed at this level. She was also asked to lead the RSC's regional tour through Britain and Northern Ireland. From choosing the three plays and her company to selecting suitable venues and performing in and overseeing the productions, the result was a highly demanding and frequently humorous trip. On her return from the tour she was invited by Ian McKellen and Edward Petherbridge to join their National Theatre group as the director of Sheridan's The Critic, as part of a double-bill with Tom Stoppard's The Real Inspector Hound at the same time as playing in The Duchess of Malfi and as Madame Ranevskaya… Read More

London: Arms and Armour, 1998. A Fine unmarked copy with no inscriptions. 160 pages. Illustrated. C.S. Forester's much-loved novels portrayed Horatio Hornblower as a dashing hero who came to represent British naval tradition of courage and gallantry - but was he an entirely fictional creation? Bryan thinks not as he shows the many parallels between Hornblower's career and that of a real hero, Admiral Sir James Gordon. Gordon came from a modest background, joined the navy at 11, served more than 75 years, and died an Admiral of the Fleet. An absorbing story by a master of research. 50. Soft Cover.
