Description:
Two volumes. Original printed russet wrappers. Spines repaired, a few chips. Foxed. An excellent set. Half morocco case.
First American edition, in original printed wrappers. This is the conclusion of Cooper's Littlepage Manuscripts trilogy, a series of novels examining the leasehold system in New York. Cooper saw attacks on the system as a threat to private property. "He was particularly incensed when tenants, disguised as American Indians, resorted to violence" in opposition to the landowners" (ANB).
This is an excellent example in the original wrappers. They correspond most closely to BAL's states A and E respectively, but with an ampersand in the imprint in place of "and;" BAL states there is no known priority and that "the wrappers may have been printed simultaneously."

Description:
FIRST EDITION. This celebrated report represents the first major government plan for systematic internal improvements to promote American industry and agriculture. The report includes a letter from Robert Fulton on canals (pp. 102-23), and a letter by Benjamin Henry Latrobe on railroads, the earliest printed call for building railroads in the U.S. Gallatin called for the federal government to build a system of canals along the Atlantic seaboard and to establish communication between the Atlantic, the midwestern rivers, and the Great Lakes. "The historic Gallatin Report . . . defined a concept of internal improvement which, in its broad terms has remained up to modern times a virtual statement of national policy" (The District . .. Army Corps of Engineers 1866-1971). Gallatin believed the improvements could be made for $20 million and the debt paid within 20 years. The proposed indebtedness would have been unprecedented, and many including Jefferson believed the plan was… Read More

Description:
An important early offering brochure regarding the sale of the first modern compass and early navigational aids. This is a price list and an extensive collection of reports and testimonial letters from ship captains concerning Thomson's sounding apparatus (the first to use wire instead of hemp) and compass.
"The modern compass dates from 1876, when Sir William Thomson patented his dry-card compass" (Singer, History of Technology
V). Thomson was deeply interested in the application of science to industry, and he apparently prepared this rare, ephemeral publication to promote his products, which helped to make him a wealthy man.
This brochure includes a detailed price list for Thomson's navigational instruments.19 leaves, printed rectos only, stapled as issued. Some soiling. Very good.
