This edition seems to be a rip-off by the American Sunday-School Union-- without acknowledging the author-- from the London publication of the same year by James Nisbet. Mary Bayly particularly addresses the living situation in the Kensington Potteries, where English "undesirables" (chimney sweeps, bow-makers, pig keepers) lived in an undrained area. One of her proposed remedies was "mother's meetings", where women could swap recipes and learn from each other; Mary Bayly seems to have been Deborah Alcock's (1835-1913) mother (see Elisabeth Boyd Bayly's The Author of The Spanish Brothers on Inheritance Publications website), but little is known of her even at Harvard.
