Description:
16 items, including correspondence and manuscript documents, most dating from 1775-1783.
Manuscript archive consisting of correspondence and documents written by Continental Army officers, privateers and merchants during the Revolutionary War, all addressed to Francis Gurney of Philadelphia. The principle correspondents in this collection were well to do merchants before the war who carried on a variety of business ventures, including privateering. The correspondence centers upon Gurney with whom several of the main correspondents had dealings before and during the war. The contents of this archive are both highly interesting and by their very nature extremely scarce and should be of considerable interest to scholars studying the role of Revolutionary War Privateers in winning American Independence which is gaining the increased interest and attention of scholars and historians.

My dear Benefactress,
I wrote you a letter before which I believe you have received. I wrote in it about me, my parents, sisters and brothers. We are all well. In the parish we live there are three girls schools and three boys schools. Father has meetings in these schools on Sunday and weekday afternoons. The Christian women have a good meeting regularly on Sunday afternoons. There are some converts admitted to the churches as the result of these meetings. I attended the Sunday meetings regularly in my vacation Father preaches the sermon on every Sunday in the church. Some idolators also come to hear the sermon.

Syracuse: Loring & Green, Photographers, 64 - 66 So. Salina St., Syracuse, N.Y., 1871, large format albumen photograph, measuring 12 ½ x 14 ¼ inches, on card stock mount, with printed text, identifying the house, and with the photographer's credit. The mount measures 17 ½ x 20 ⅝ inches. Some spotting, soiling, and wear to edges of mount, some abrasions to corners and lower edge of the image, else in good condition.
The photograph shows the apparently newly built residence of G. B. Kent, at 91 James Street. The Kent family stands on the front porch and in the front yard, enclosed by a wrought iron fence, a church is located next door. None of these structures appear to be extant at present, likely demolished to make way for the elevated highways bisecting Syracuse.

Description:
No Binding. Very Good. quarto, 2 pages, folded, docketing information on last page, in very good clean and legible condition. Russell in this letter gives a far-sighted view of American missionaries as first sources of "intelligence" from distant lands. It is Russell's retained copy, possibly in the hand of his wife Sarah, with her initialed note on the second page. "Rev. Dr. Anderson Dear Sir, I have just been reading the account of the proceedings of A.B.C.F.M. at their recent meeting in Philadelphia and saw with much regret the painful embarrassment of the Board in its pecuniary affairs. This called up anew a scheme, a wild one perhaps, that entered my mind some time ago, and I now with diffidence suggest it to you. If you deem it impracticable, or if carried into effect of no utility, the suggestion will do no harm, save the trespassing upon your time in making it known, which I hope good intentions will excuse. My idea was to get up a… Read More

"In 1837 an attempted insurrection in Canada was put down, and the group fled to an American island in the Niagra River. A small steamer, the Caroline, brought provisions to them, and the British sent out a force to destroy it, which they did, killing Amos Durfee in the effort. The incident led to a controversy between the United States and England. McLeod, while in Buffalo, boasted of being Durfee's killer. He was arrested and charged by New York state with the murder. The United States government tried to prevent the trial, and failing, the United States Attorney successfully defended McLeod, who probably had no part in the event." – see McDade, Annals of Murder, 660
