Orig. pub. New York 1886. Reprinted 1974 from 1903 ed.. Print on Demand Edition 2015. (iv), xviii, 324 pp., map, index In his trilogy about the men who settled the Old Southwest, the author develops the thesis that these men, under the leadership of John Sevier, Isaac Shelby, and James Robertson, not only planted a civilization beyond the Alleghenies but exerted an important influence in shaping the ultimate destinies of this country. Two of these men, Sevier and Shelby, during the Revolution helped thwart the British plan to envelop and crush the Southern Colonies and then helped turn the tide of the Revolution at the Battle of King's Mountain. Acting together after the Revolution, the three men frustrated Spain's design to weaken the Union by creating a separate republic in the country between the Allegheny Mountains and the Mississippi River. Had that plan been successful, it would have kept the vast region beyond the Mississippi a Spanish province. This first volume of the trilogy, The…

Orig. pub. New York 1901. Reprinted 1972, 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2021. (ii), 224 pp. + illus. In this classic of Loyalist literature, Elizabeth Lichtenstein Johnson (1764-1848) describes her life as daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother in Savannah, Canada, Britain, and the West Indies during the period 1764 -1837. Born near Savannah, she was the daugher of Russian emigrant John Lichtenstein. She married Dr. William Martin Johnston in Savannah. He was a member of one of Georgia's most prominent Loyalist families. In the early days of the Revolution, they left Georgia for British Halifax. He had fought for the King in New York and returned to Georgia with the British invasion of 1778. He and his men were involved in many of the battles of the Southern campaign and two of his brothers were killed in the war. Their father, Dr. Lewis Johnson, had been treasurer of the colony of Georgia and served on the Governor's Council. Surviving the siege of Savannah in 1779, Elizabeth Johnston spent many…

Description:
Orig. pub. 1981. Print on Demand Edition 2015. (xiv), 452 pp., illus., map, appendix, notes, index Located between the Great Pee Dee and Lynches rivers in the middle coastal plain of South Carolina, the area which forms present-day Florence County is the subject of this history by the late G. Wayne King, who was a professor of history at Francis Marion College. Beginning with the settlement of the area around 1735 by Welsh immigrants from Pennsylvania, the book moves to discussions of the Revolutionary War exploits of Francis Marion, the coming of the Railroad in 1846 (an event which literally created the community of Florence), the Civil War, during which Florence was the location of a stockade for Union prisoners, and Reconstruction which found the area a center of Red Shirt activities. As Florence turned its attention to becoming a part of the New South, the most important event was the creation of the county, in 1888, from portions of Marion, Darlington, and Williamsburg counties. The subsequent…

Description:
Orig. pub. 1988. Print on Demand Edition 2016. (xxii), 392 pp., 4 maps, intro., index This is the longest volume in this set and the most ambitious of Smith's work. Major articles are "Charleston and Charleston Neck--The Original Grantees and the Settlements along the Ashley and Cooper Rivers," "The Ashley River: Its Seats and Settlements," and "The Upper Ashley; and the Mutations of Families." Other articles are "The Orange Quarter and the First French Settlers in South Carolina," "Hog Island and Shute's Folly," and "Goose Creek." In these articles Smith achieves a synthesis of historical information about the growth and changes of the rivers and regional communities during a period of history when the settlers fixed the model of plantation culture on Lowcountry South Carolina. Smith died before completing his "Goose Creek" sketch and it is presented here as he left it. There is also significant genealogical material contained throughout this volume.

Description:
Orig. pub. New York 1857. Reprinted 1975. Print on Demand Edition 2011. viii, 9-330 pp. This is a collection of essays, largely historical, concerning Alabama and the old Southwest from the beginning of settlement to 1850. As the title indicates, Meek, a lawyer, newspaper editor, and politician, chose the more colorful incidents of Alabama history, but he vouches for the authenticity of the factual material presented. In general the events related pertain to Spanish and French exploration of the Southwest, British possession of the area, the Mexican War, and the Creek Indians. Included among the essays are ones describing the pilgrimage of DeSoto, the massacre at Fort Mims, the battle of Burnt Creek, General Sam Dale and the canoe fight, and biographies of William Weatherford (Red Eagle) and other Creek chieftains and warriors. These tales of adventures, battles, thrilling escapes, massacres, tragic love stories, heroes, and gallant deeds make this an interesting collection.
