Description:
Venezia (Venice): Carlo Pecora, 1744. Two volumes (3 & 4 of 6) bound as one. Large 4to. Early full vellum binding with a brown leather title patch; all edges gilt; marbled pastedown endpapers. Parallel texts in Italian and French for seventy-two fables, each illustrated with a beautiful full-page color etching by Fossati. Each etching is printed in one of various shades of red, orange, brown, green, blue and black. In addition to the 72 plates, there are engraved vignettes on the 4 title pages, a red engraved headpiece for volume 3, and an engraved tailpiece following the text for each of the fables. Fossati (1706-1778) was an Italian architect who also was a very good printmaker and book illustrator. For the fables he portrayed animals realistically and used his architectural training for accurate renderings of baroque buildings. A rare title: OCLC locates only 13 libraries with any of the volumes. Ours is a very nice (vg+) copy with text and plates on clean and supple laid paper; very… Read More

Description:
London: School of Archaeology in Egypt / Bernard Quaritch, 1915. vii, 38 pages + 62 plates, many folding. Folio. First edition. Riqqeh and Memphis VI is one of a series of books published to report the findings of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. Much of the work was performed by Reginald Engelbach, an engineer turned Egyptologist, and Sir Flinders Petrie, holder of the first chair of Egyptology in England. The artifacts they discovered, many of which are pictured in this volume, form significant parts of the archaeological holdings of the Egyptian Museum of Cairo and the British Museum. The book is clean and tight, with a faint and shallow (1/8 inch) line of water stain at the top of the rear cover and the top margin of the last 3 plates in the book; there also is some staining on the spine that does not obscure the still bright gilt title.. New York: Lieber and Lewis, 1922. Original linocut, from an edition limited to 500 impressions. Alfred Frueh (1880-1968) began his art career in1903, drawing editorial cartoons and theatre caricatures for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He became a national figure when his 1907 satirical drawing of music hall star Fritzi Scheff was so offensive to her that she cancelled a scheduled performance in St. Louis. Frueh later became a cartoonist for the New York World, doing caricatures of leading Broadway personalities. In 1912 he mounted an exhibition of his caricatures for an exhibition at ""291"", the New York art gallery of Alfred Stieglitz, who praised the exhibition: "Frueh is to be congratulated for the delightful manner in which he has depicted his impressions of our entertainers, displaying a pictorial sense of line and color, an ability to seize the significant characters of each individual and emphasize them with a gentle if sometimes mordant irony."
