Reboundings: an essay by Daniel Buren, followed by 7 plates and 7 diagrams. Black & white illus. & color diagrams. 77, [2] pp. 8vo, pictorial softcover, title on spine. Brussels: Daled & Gevaert, 1977.

The scarce French and English editions of Buren's polemical text, both printed in editions of 530 copies; both in excellent condition. The artist was driven to write this as a pointed critique of museums and curators five years after the controversy surrounding his contribution to documenta 5: Exposition d'une exposition, une pièce en 7 tableaux. In the build-up to the quinquennial exhibition of contemporary art in Kassel, artists wrestled with the increasing creative control exerted by head curator Harald Szeemann (1933-2005). Description:
Four folding engraved plates. xxxviii, [2], 184 pp. 4to, cont. mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: David l'aîné, 1749. First edition of one of Alembert's most important books. "During the late 1740's, d'Alembert, Clairaut, and Euler were all working on the famous three-body problem, with varying success. D'Alembert's interest in celestial mechanics thus led him, in 1749, to publish a masterly work, the Recherches sur la Précession des Equinoxes...The precession of the equinoxes, a problem previously attacked by Clairaut, was very difficult. D'Alembert's method was similar to Clairaut's but he employed more terms in his integration of the equation of motion and arrived at a solution more in accord with the observed motion of the earth. He was rightly proud of his book."-D.S.B., I, p. 113. A very fine copy and scarce on the market. From the library of Marchese Giulio Stanga Carlo Trecco (d.… Read More

Engraved vignette on title & 31 folding engraved plates. Title in red & black. vii, [1], 343, [1] pp. Large 4to, cont. calf (corners a little bruised with one having a bit of wear), spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Göttingen & Leyden: E. Luzac Sons, 1754. First edition of this important book. "In the Recherches, Bonnet grouped five memoirs, all of which were of prime importance for plant biology: He precisely described the characteristics of the nutrition of leaves and of their transpiratory phenomena. Although he did not know the kinds of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) produced and absorbed by green leaves exposed to light, Bonnet made very careful observations on their production. For his masterly experimentation, Bonnet should be considered one of the first naturalists to investigate experimentally the question of photosynthesis. He studied the movement of leaves and discovered the epinastic phenomena; he observed the position of leaves on… Read More

Six folding engraved plates. lxviii, 260 pp.; vi, 290 pp.; xlviii, 263 pp. Three vols. 4to, cont. mottled calf (lower cover of Vol. II a little wormed), spines gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: David, 1754-54-56. First edition. "Devoted primarily to the motion of the moon (Volume II included a new set of lunar tables), it was written at least partially to guard d'Alembert's claims to originality against those of Clairaut. As was so often the case, d'Alembert's method was mathematically more sound, but Clairaut's method was more easily used by astronomers."-D.S.B., I, p. 114. Clairaut's anonymous and unfavorable review of the third volume, published in the Journal des Sçavans, caused a bitter, famous, and extended controversy which continued until Clairaut's death in 1765. Fine set. From the library of Marchese Giulio Stanga Carlo Trecco (d. 1832), amateur mathematician and physicist who formed a large collection of… Read More

Description:
One folding engraved plate & 16 folding printed tables. viii, 327, [8] pp. 8vo, cont. green calf-backed marbled boards (rather well-rebacked with the orig. spine laid-down), flat spine gilt. Paris: Nyon, 1804. First edition of the work which "laid the foundations of a new science, phytochemistry. Saussure examined the chief active components of plants, their synthesis, and their decomposition. He specified the relationships between vegetation and the environment and here, too, did pioneering work in what became the fields of pedology and ecology."-D.S.B., XII, p. 124. In this work, Saussure systematically applied for the first time the quantitative method of chemical research, as founded by Lavoisier, to living subjects. He was able to establish the quantity of oxygen absorbed by a plant at night and also the quantity of water consumed in association with the absorption of carbonic acid that is required for the growth of the plant. He also determined the indispensability of… Read More

Grenoble: Cuchet, 1778. First edition of one of the most famous and attractive of all geological books in which the author "established once and for all that basalt, a rock important scientifically because of its distinctive characteristics, its widespread occurrence, and the manner of its association with other kinds of rocks, was the product of volcanic action."-D.S.B., IV, p. 548. Faujas compared mineralogically the rocks present in Vivarais and Velay with the ejected material of active volcanoes. Description:
2 p.l., 105 pp. 8vo, orig. pink wrappers (spine worn & chipped, upper wrapper nearly detached), uncut. Paris: Baudouin, An IX [1801]. First separate edition, originally appearing in the Mémoires of the Institut National des Sciences et Arts, Vol. III (1801). This is a very important and scarce work which marks the starting point of Berthollet's complete new system of chemistry, later developed in his comprehensive, two volume Essai de Statique Chimique. The present work has as its origins a paper read before the Institute of Egypt in Cairo in the summer of 1799 while Berthollet accompanied Napoleon on his expedition to Egypt. "The work was an attempt to improve Bergman's determinations of affinities by recognizing the influence of such factors as volatility, solubility and especially the relative quantities of substances present (chemical mass). The reversibility and incompleteness of reactions was recognized and that the conditions of reactions could yield compounds… Read More

viii, 285 pp. 8vo, cont. blue boards (corners & head of spine a bit worn), spine gilt. Paris: P.D. Pierres, 1781. First edition. "This government ordered study was undertaken to determine whether tin from various sources contains arsenic in large enough amounts to make the use of vessels of tin harmful to health. Bayen and Charlard (Rouelle had been named to work with them but he died before the work began) repeated the experiments of Marggraf and added new ones. Their conclusion was that tin contained no arsenic or only minute harmless traces. In the course of the many experiments the nature and reactions of tin were examined in detail. The Avant-Propos contains a history of tin."-Cole 64. Bayen (1725-98), was one of the first to doubt the phlogiston theory and performed noteworthy experiments on calcination; he is considered a forerunner of Lavoisier. One engraved plate & one folding printed table. xvi, 375 pp.; 2 p.l., 412 pp. Two vols. 8vo, cont. cat's paw calf (light foxing & minor stains). Paris: Maradan, Seconde Année de la République [1794]. First edition. Lamarck (1744-1829), the noted biologist and evolutionist, had pronounced chemical theories and they were an important part of his ideas about nature and evolution. He was an adversary of Lavoisier's anti-phlogistic theory and proposed the four-element theory (earth, air, water, and fire). Lamarck believed that these four elements "have no attraction for one another but tend to separate unless constrained by force...He proposed a new 'pyrotic theory'."-Partington, III, p. 490. Lamarck attempted to account for a great number of chemical and physical phenomena such as sound, electricity, magnetism, color, and vaporization with his system. "In this work Lamarck sets forth his views on the immutability of species and attacks the theory of the spontaneous origin of life. The book is… Read More

Large 4to, later blue wrappers (title a little dusty), newly stitched, uncut. Paris: "chez l'Auteur Rue Casette No. 18," [1816]. First edition of one of the great rarities of lithography. Engelmann (1788-1839), a native of Mulhouse, first learned of lithography in 1813 and began to experiment on some stones. Realizing he needed more information, he decided to go to Munich to see the process at first hand. "For several weeks Engelmann studied the art in the studios of Stuntz where Strixner and Piloty worked. He had his own press constructed and produced some lithographs in the tinted style which had become so popular in Germany. Like Lasteyrie, whom he is supposed to have met in Munich, Engelmann returned [to Mulhouse] with a press, stones, and all the equipment… Read More

58; 67 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. yellow wrappers (wrappers somewhat discolored), orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Kyoto?: Preface dated 1862. An early and rare edition, greatly enlarged by Tetsujō Ugai 鵜飼徹定, of this comprehensive bibliography of writings of the Buddhist sect Jodo Shinshu (also known as Shin Buddhism or True Pure Land Buddhism). It is today the most widely practiced branch of Buddhism in Japan. This catalogue, which amounts to a bibliography, was originally compiled by Mon'no Ryorenji (1700-63), one of the most influential Buddhist scholars of the 18th century and 17th head of the Ryorenji Temple in Kyoto. The temple was established in 980 by Genshin (942-1017), the author of Essentials of Rebirth, written in 985 and a central text in the development of True Pure Land school of Buddhism. The first edition appeared in 1741-44 and Tetsujo Ugai (1814-91), has made additions to Ryorenji's text. The catalogue includes descriptions of… Read More
