Description:
8vo. Original green boards with iconic dust jacket illustrated by Ampelio Tettamanti; an excellent, fresh copy.
First edition in the original Russian of Pasternak's beloved modern classic, in which he tells the tragic story of the physician and poet Yuri Zhivago during and after the Russian Revolution. After the controversial work was finished in 1956, it was opposed by Soviet censors as anti-Marxist and rejected for publication. Feltrinelli smuggled the manuscript to Italy and simultaneously published this edition and an Italian translation.
Pasternak (1890-1960) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958 for Doctor Zhivago, but under pressure from Soviet authorities he did not accept it. The celebrated work was not officially published in Russia until 1988, though a number of samizdat copies were made.

Description:
Three volumes. 8vo. Woodcut chapter headings, folding table. Contemporary calf-backed boards, gilt spines; an excellent set.
First edition, possibly the first printing, of Necker's famous work on the financial health of France. A very interesting and possibly unique copy, bibliographically. The collation (iv, ciii, [i], 234; [iv], 374, including errata on verso of table of contents (p. iv); [iv], 332, including errata at bottom of final text leaf) differs from every copy we have examined. These volumes were printed from a smaller set of type and thus contains fewer leaves though the text is exactly the same in virtually all other copies of the first edition found. It is also an earlier printing as many of the other copies we looked at have the few errata items corrected.
Necker (1732-1804) was opposed to raising taxes and instituted loans at high interest rates to help with the French debt. At the time of the American revolution, which was very popular with nearly all the French… Read More

New York: Viking Press, 1957. FIRST EDITION. With two half-titles and detachable "radiation diary" endpapers. Publisher's original blue cloth and dust jacket, slight wear and fading to dust jacket with small tears to rear cover; text is pristine. An excellent copy. First edition designed to tell the "sober truth about the perils of radiation" in daily life. In the wake of the end of WWII, and the detonation of the hydrogen bomb, concerns about radiation and it's affect on the average person were at an all-time high. Schubert and Lapp examine what radiation is, where it comes from, and the potential for harm to the general population ranging from devastating atomic accidents to incidental exposure in medical facilities. Not only do they discuss the short-term effects of radiation exposure and poisoning, but they also touch on the long-term, hereditary effects and the effects on children. They even include a detachable "radiation diary" for the reader to log his or her encounters with radiation.… Read More

Description:
Cambridge: University Press, 1913. FIRST EDITION. With 5 plates and 131 text illustrations. Original green cloth, rubbed; signature of R.T. Beatty on half-title. First edition of Rutherford's last great work detailing the entire up-to-date development of the science of nuclear physics. According to the preface, "in the seven years that have elapsed since the publication of Radio-activity there has been such steady growth of knowledge of the properties of the radiations from active substances, and of the remarkable series of transformations that occur in them ... the present volume is an entirely new work." Rutherford, in describing the atom as a solar system with a mass at the center and planet-like negative electrons orbiting around it, was possibly the first to use the word "nucleus."Rutherford (1871-1937), a physicist at Cambridge, developed the revolutionary theory that radioactivity is a by-product of the transmutation of one form of matter into another. He also detected and named alpha and beta… Read More

Paris: Bachelier, 1847. Soft linen wrappers. A rare report by Alcan on Marey-Monge's publication, Études sur l'aérostation. In 1783, Marey-Monge had proposed a chain of 25 balloons strung together by a flexible cable, each one manned by a separate aeronaut. This train would work itself through the air by the activities of the aeronauts, who were to increase or decrease the fires in the grates of the Montgolfieres so that each balloon in succession would rise or fall, causing a wave to travel back through the air.
