Lloyd George and Winston Churchill draw their bows in a common offensive." In 1904, Churchill dramatically quit the Conservative Party to join the Liberals. Churchill had spent nearly the entirety of the 1930s in the political wilderness, out of power, out of favor, and frequently at odds with both his own Conservative Party and prevailing public sentiment. Description:
London: Jonathan Cape Ltd., 1927. Numbered and limited issue of the first edition. Quarter leather. This is the English first, limited, and numbered edition of Revolt in the Desert - the first version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in LawrenceÂ’s lifetime. This limited edition was distinctly different from its English trade edition counterpart. The binding is larger and features quarter brown pigskin spine over brown buckram boards with a gilt rule transition. The extensively illustrated contents feature generous margins, untrimmed fore and bottom edges, gilt top edges, and green and yellow head and tail bands. The edition was limited to 315 copies. The large size of the volume was dictated by inclusion of colored plates from the 1926 SubscribersÂ’ edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. As a result, the text differs from the trade issue; “In order to justify the inclusion of some of the persons represented in the plates and otherwise mentioned in the text, a few extra… Read More

This is copy 171 of 250 of the publisher's limited issue of the first U.S. edition, hand-numbered thus on the limitation page. This is a large, handsome book. The volume measures 10.625 x 8.125 inches (30 x 20.6 cm), bound in heavy blue buckram with a brown leather spine label, gilt top edge, blue and yellow head and tail bands, and blue endpapers. The contents are printed on large laid paper sheets with generous margins and untrimmed fore and bottom edges. Description:
Melbourne & New York: George J. Hicks & Co. / Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1927. First "Australasian Edition". Hardcover. This Australasian issue of Revolt in the Desert is distinguished by the unique dust jacket. Australian publisher George J. Hicks & Co obtained second printing copies from the American publisher, Doran, which were then fitted with a “George J. Hicks & Co.” dust jacket. The second printing of the American first edition swiftly followed the first in 1927, differing only by absence of a small publisherÂ’s insignia on the copyright page and “Doubleday, Doran” rather than just “Doran” on the title page (the merger having occurred in 1927 after the first printing). As noted by OÂ’Brien (A107, p.83) “at least two copies of this later impression exist which have dust wrapper with George J. Hicks imprint on spine.” This is one such copy. The Australasian jacket is printed black on heavy, ribbed, tan paper featuring a front cover line drawing profile of Lawrence in Arab headdress, a… Read More

Description:
New York: George H. Doran, 1927. Second U.S. edition ("Gift Edition"). Hardcover. Revolt in the Desert is the only version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom published for the general public in LawrenceÂ’s lifetime. This is the second American edition – the so-called “Gift Edition” issued for the 1927 Christmas season. Although it resembles the English first edition in dust jacket, binding, and format, illustrations render this second American edition unique. The text contains 18 black and white line cuts from the famous 1926 SubscriberÂ’s edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom found in no other edition of Revolt in the Desert, and striking Kennington endpapers are also exclusive to this edition. Condition approaches near fine in a good plus dust jacket. The brown buckram binding is square, clean, bright, and tight with vivid spine gilt and only trivial shelf wear to the bottom edges. The contents are clean with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. All illustrations are intact, as are the Kennington… Read More

Description:
London: Conservative and Unionist Central Office, 1949. First edition. Pamphlet. This is the first and only edition of Winston ChurchillÂ’s speech of 23 July 1949. The 19-page, wire-stitched pamphlet bound in illustrated wraps measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches (21.6 x 14 cm) and is bound in coated paper wraps, the front cover with a photograph of Churchill addressing the crowd. Condition approaches very good. The fragile wraps binding remains complete. Both original binding staples are firmly intact with surface corrosion that has not stained the adjacent wraps. The wraps themselves show no loss or tears, despite light overall soiling and some wear and wrinkling to extremities, The contents are crisp and clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting or appreciable age-toning, marred only by a little creasing at the corners and fore edges. This is a partisan speech given at a mass rally for Conservatives in Wolverhampton on 23rd July 1949. Churchill was speaking as head of the Conservative… Read More

Description:
London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1905. Limited, numbered, finely-bound deluxe, signed edition. Vellum. This exceptional 1905 edition of Washington IrvingÂ’s classic tale was notably and lavishly illustrated by Arthur Rackham. This is not just an aesthetically arresting and highly collectable edition on its own merits, but represents both a stylistic and professional turning point for the celebrated illustrator who contributed his art and his signature to this edition. Rip van Winkle was the first book entirely illustrated by Rackham to be issued in a limited edition format and “established him as the leading decorative illustrator of the Edwardian period.” Indeed, it was owing to exhibit of RackhamÂ’s Rip van Winkle illustrations in Leicester Galleries, London, that “J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, commissioned Rackham to illustrate the first edition of his classic children's tale Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906)”. This editionÂ’s 250 copies were bound in illustrated vellum, lettered in… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, second printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, second printing of Churchill's second published work, an unrestored, fully intact set in the striking, original bindings. This second printing is readily distinguished from the first printing only by the words "Second Impression" on the title page and a 1900 date replacing 1899. Condition approaches very good. The dark blue cloth bindings are intact and unfaded, with quite respectable shelf presentation, the spines notably unfaded. We note modest wear to extremities, including wrinkling to the spine ends and some overall spine creasing, including some concavity to the upper Volume II spine – a typical toll of the massive text blocks. The illustrated cloth bindings are substantially clean, showing only minor blemishes. The contents are complete - all of the extensive Illustrations, Maps, and Plans are present, as are the frontispiece portraits and tissue guards. A noteworthy oddity is that… Read More

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. First U.S. edition. Hardcover. This is a superior copy of the U.S. first edition of Churchill's second book in the striking original dust jacket. Originally published in England in 1899, this was one of the few Churchill books that did not see a U.S. first edition concurrent with the British. In 1933 a new edition was issued in both England and, for the first time, in the U.S. with a bibliographically significant new introduction by the author explaining that "A generation has grown up which knows little of why we are in Egypt and the Sudan.” This is one of just 1,040 U.S. first edition copies issued. Per Richard Langworth (p.35), binding was probably done in England, using English sheets and a Scribner's title page cancel, since copies are bound in the identical lilac cloth as the Eyre & Spottiswoode edition of the same year. However, the striking dust jacket is unique to this U.S. first edition, printed in red and black, bearing R. C. Woodville's dramatic… Read More

Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, of Churchill's second published work, the lengthiest from his time as an itinerant cavalry officer and war correspondent during the waning days of Queen VictoriaÂ’s reign. This first edition is not only compellingly written, but also physically beautiful. The two large, lavish volumes are decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Each volume is printed on heavy paper with a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. They are also scarce; there were 2,000 copies of this first edition, first printing. Moreover, this is one of the few Churchill books for which there was no concurrent U.S. first edition. This is an unrestored, intact set in the striking, original bindings. Condition is very good. The original bindings are often both significantly worn and broken loose from their massive text blocks. In this case,… Read More

Description:
London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1933. Hardcover. This is the first printing of the bibliographically significant 1933 edition of Churchill's second book in the scarce dust jacket. Originally published in 1899, The River War recounts Churchill's experiences and reflections concerning British involvement in the Sudan, including ChurchillÂ’s participation in “the last great British cavalry charge”. In 1933, a so-called "Second Cheap Edition" was made from plates of the 1902 edition with a bibliographically significant new introduction by the author explaining that "A generation has grown up which knows little of why we are in Egypt and the Sudan." There were ultimately five printings of this edition with at least seven different dust jackets issued (at least two for the 1933 second printing and two for the final, 1951 printing). Description:
London : Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1915. Third edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the Shilling Library edition of Churchill's second book. The River War recounts the experiences and reflections of a young Winston Churchill – then still just an itinerant cavalry officer and war correspondent - concerning British involvement in the Sudan. Bibliographically the third edition (after the first of 1899 and the second, abridged and revised edition of 1902), this edition was billed as a “cheap edition” during the First World War - a momentous time for Churchill that saw him serve both in the Cabinet and on the Front and that nearly cost him both his political and corporeal lives. It was published in August 1915. Three months earlier Churchill had been forced to resign from the Admiralty after being scapegoated for military disaster in the Dardanelles. Three months after this edition was published, Churchill was serving as a lieutenant colonel, leading a battalion in the trenches on the Western… Read More
