Printed handbill (8.5" by 5.5", verso blank) distributed to the public by the Buffalo Superintendent of Police reporting a safe burglary at the general store of Bates & White in Erie County. Includes a full listing of items stolen, including certificates of deposit, silver, paper currency, postage stamps, and bank books, totaling over $2,140 in losses.

A 10 1/2" x 8" die-cut, embossed, multi- tier valentine is loaded with charm.The first tier has big pink and white flowers in a heart shape design with twolove birdsholding pinkflowers. A resale company has has sent salesman sample pieces of book binding supplies to an art teach as noted in the correspondence below. The first item is a singular sample of "Russet Crepe" which has been adhered to a stiff board. Measures 4 3/4" x 3". The second item is a "Book Cloth" which has thirteen (13) different color small samples of an unknown fabric. Measures 2" x 2" (fabric square), 2 3/4" x 2 1/2" (book). The last item is a single fold booklet, with a total of twenty-two (22) different types of samples. There are six (6) different colored gummed cloth samples, with one (1) super gummed cloth meant for reinforcing items. There are six (6) linen and cotton tape samples in a variety of colors. New York & Chicago: O. L. Schwencke, 1907. Cover wear. A 66 pp. salesman sample of deeply embossed gilt embellished cigar labels produced by O. L. Schwencke. Elaborate and intricately designed. Elegant women, royalty, spotted trout, privileged gentlemen, road houses, cigarette in progress (silver ash), scenes from nature, Indigenous peoples , Cuba, Puerto Rica, Transportation and much more. Each with a label number and pricing information. Measures 6.5 by 9.75 inches. Gilt stamped boards. Only Schwenke and Schlegel were the only two independent cigar label printers who stayed independent from the American Lithographing Company. Schwenke was an important producer of elaborate embossed chromolithographed cigar box labels.

Chromolithograph poster of two young people holding an American flag, with following caption:The Saloon or the Boys and Girls "The American Issue". Measures 17 3/4" x 25" poster size. A poster produced by The American Issue Publishing Co., Westerville OH. The poster was available for purchase through the company. Prohibition - the prevention by law of the manufacture and sale of alcohol, especially in the US between 1920 and 1933.

1930. Separations on the first 2 (thinnest) foil sheets. All present.. A scarce 7.5" x 5" bottom opening sample book for various grades of tin foil. Card wraps. The only indication of maker is a logo of a plumbed cap. Introductory page introduces the various uses for tin foil including tobacco, soap, candy, mouth of bottle, tea boxes and toilet articles. "Tin Foil is used to prevent dampness from penetrating into various articles and for decorating purpose." Each page includes information on the size, quality, thickness and price (no prices included). Each is a combination of Tin and Lead with percentages. Includes eight (8) samples and eight (8) unused pages. Tin Foil was used mostly prior to the advent of aluminum foil.

Chicago ILL: Messenger Publishing Co, 1917. Minimal wear. Light creases.. A seven page calendar, printed on both sides. A 15 3/4" x 7" calendar with medal top binding and braided string hanger printed on polished stock. The front cover depicts a color illustration of a mother peeking through currents at her toddler son playing with blocks It is captioned "My Boy's Future (Home Town State) WET OR DRY? I must decide for him". Each calendar pages have page has a two color illustration juxtaposing a "dry" person or function with a "wet" person. e.g. "He chose temperance and owns the freight" "He chose the saloon and wheels the freight". Each followed by supporting scripture or similar quote. Followed by two calendar months. The reverse of each calendar page contains extensive narrative including graphs and charts on the impacts of temperance vs. intemperance. Much editorializing and opinion. The final back page is the status of temperance by state in 1917.

Damage to printed label on upper cover.. A composition notebook filled with approx. fifty-five (55) hand-sewn samples of stitches, hemming, and embroidery, captioned in ink manuscript by "Mrs. Robert D. Patterson", a student of either sewing or home economics. She received a "B+" grade, marked in pencil on the first leaf. The samples show her progress from simple stitches (back stitch, slip stitch) to more complex techniques (buttonholes, pockets, patching, piping, smocking). Each sample is rendered in red floss on natural linen. Large 8vo (10.25" by 8"), approx. 75 blank leaves with approx. 20 leaves filled with ink manuscript and sewing samples, bound in original composition notebook with printed paper label on upper cover with ink manuscript ("Mrs. Robert D. Patterson").

Addison, New York, 1920. Very good. Toned, extremities rubbed. All samples appear present.. Twelve (12) hand-sewn examples of stitching by a school girl, Catherine T. Flynn, likely made in a sewing or home economics class. Penned in her finest cursive. The techniques used include: running stitch; even basting; two examples of uneven basting; diagonal basting; two examples of gauging; shirring; hemming; vertical hemming; blind hemming; and blanket stitch. Each example is rendered in blue floss on natural-colored linen, and is numbered in the right-hand corner. The first example has a longer caption describing the wide uses of the running stitch. 8vo (8.25" by 6.25"), approx. 30 lined leaves of notebook paper, with twelve leaves used to showcase sewing samples, the remainder left blank. Sewn in original composition notebook covers. Ink manuscript to upper cover.

Paper brittle.. An album of over thirty (30) stitching, sewing, weaving, and tassel samples issued to students of the Brick Church Sewing School in New York c.1880. This example was owned by "Florence M. Dunn", a student; there is at least one other nearly identical album extant, stamped instead on the upper cover with another student's name, "Hermia L. Kallenberg". Each sample in these albums is extraordinarily fine and skilled, and has been clearly been carefully handmade by the instructor(s) for the young girls to copy and aspire to. San Luis Obispo, CA: San Luis Hot Sulphur Springs, 1907. General wear. Staples are rusted.. An promotional booklet for San Luis Hot Sulphur Springs which was operated by A. M. Smith. The booklet contains information about the resort and over twenty-five printed black and white photographs of the resort and surrounding area. The resort claimed that their water had healing properties. The water itself has a "volume of about 200,000 gallons every 24 hours and its temperature 110 degrees Fahrenheit", and that curative properties of the water has helped those who have "suffered for years... thousands, in fact, have been saved from lives of absolute torture, by bathing in and drinking of these wonderful waters." The spa was open year around and claimed that their "prices [were] not extortionate" as it is "a lot cheaper to spend a few weeks at San Luis Ho Sulphur Springs than to be sick half the year." Paris, France, 1890. This paper toy depicts a woman on one side milking her cow and a little girl drinking milk at the table on the other side. Both the little girl's glass of milk and the stream of milk produced by the cow are tissue paper with a capsule of sand behind it. This means that as you turn the postcard over, the sand gives the illusion of milk gushing from from the cow's utter into the pail on one side, and the milk disappearing from the glass as the girl drinks it on the other side. The toy was sold by Printemps, a French department store, sometimes called Grands Magasings Du Printemps, with 'Grands Magasings' (translates to big store) being the class of store it was. The store focused on beauty, lifestyle, fashion, accessories and men's wear. It was founded in 1865 by Jules Jaluzot and Jean-Alfred Duclos. Doors open at 7 o'clock in the morning (don't come before!). Promoting December 15th as "opening day' for the holiday season. Promoted Decorated China, Books, Music, Dolls, Games, Plush, Leather and Celluloid Goods, Writing Desks and an Illustrated Dictionary. Of interest is "an Illustrated Dictionary containing nearly 1000 pages will be given to the school scholar guessing nearest how many times the store door opens during Christmas. A sweet illustrated children's edition of "The Night Before Christmas" published by Pomeroy's Department Store, "The Home of Santa Claus", in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Each page has a half-page illustration, with some printed in red and black. 12mo (7.25" by 5"), pp. 16, stapled in original illustrated wrappers depicting Santa Claus holding a sack of toys.

Shown in demeaning caricature often riding children's toys. Two series of six (6) cards. The first is by "Kash" (Cassius Marcellus Coolidge) that includes Jay Gould riding a dragon headed Western Union pole, Bob Ingersol riding an inflatable dragon captioned Infidelity, PT Barnum riding a circus train led by an elephant, Henry Bergh riding a hobby horse and B.F. Butler riding a stick pony with a ram's head captioned Presidential Ram and finally W.H. Vanderbilt riding a toy train captioned NYC. A 32pp (unnumbered) comprehensive booklet on safety for children, and what parents should look for both inside and outside of the home to protect their children. It begins by telling the reader that there were 65 accidental deaths of children in Milwaukee in the past year, and continues on to state that even if your child survives an accident, (s)he may "be brought home on a stretcher - perhaps crippled for life - perhaps nevermore to speak or smile." Next it takes you through a variety of scenarios on how a child may be injured. Within the house, where 40% of accidental deaths occur, there is falling, scalding, choking, burning (either via cooking or any of the various contraptions used to heat one's house) or poisoning through household cleaners and/or medicine. In the traditional German manner of the day the the set includes two (2) identical 6 3/4" paper dolls and eight (8) two-sided costumes. Each costume is printed on polished paper and involves an activity. Light egg wash finish. The costumes were dubbed Pretty, Diligence, Applications, Patience, Clemency, Mansuetude, Candor and Sincerity. The costumes depict woman with exuberant baby in cradle holding a book holding a satchel and hanky holding a watering can and garden rake holding a pot with a seated shepherd boy on reverse with a dog at her feet holding a lamb with lamb at her feet on reverse. holding a dove Includes two (2) hats. Each of the costumes is numbered. Charming and dear. Information found in Howard p.279 An example of this doll was found in a German museum in the 1960s and included information on the publisher and costume labeling.
