Hardback, bound in black cloth with printed white titling and design to spine. 24 × 15.5cm, 630pp. Signed directly to the title page by Barry Unsworth. Sacred Hunger is a stunning and engrossing exploration of power, domination, and greed. Filled with the "sacred hunger" to expand its empire and its profits, England entered full into the slave trade and spread the trade throughout its colonies. In this Booker Prize-winning work, Barry Unsworth follows the failing fortunes of William Kemp, a merchant pinning his last chance to a slave ship; his son who needs a fortune because he is in love with an upper-class woman; and his nephew who sails on the ship as its doctor because he has lost all he has loved. The voyage meets its demise when disease spreads among the slaves and the captain's drastic response provokes a mutiny. Joining together, the sailors and the slaves set up a… Read More

London: Faber and Faber, 1965. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair / Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 15cm, 333pp. Alison Uttley's Sam Pig lives in a thatched cottage with Tom, Bill and Ann Pig, and also Brock the Badger. Brave, kind, lazy, vain, and optimistic, he is a very lovable pig and the stories about him are not only remarkable for their gaiety, humour and invention but acquire a particular charm from their author's unique feeling for the countryside. In this book, thirty-five of the best Sam Pig stories are brought together, with Cecil Leslie's illustrations matching the quality of the text. Condition: A good readable copy. The book has spotted foxing to the page edges and endpapers but the main body of text is clean. The title page has a vertical crease. The dustwrapper is faded to the spine, with some rubbing and creasing to the edges but is now within a protective sleeve.

Description:
New Haven & London: Yale University Press, 2015. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First paperback edition. 22.5 × 14.5cm, 400pp. For the Makahs, a tribal nation at the most northwestern point of the contiguous United States, a deep relationship with the sea is the locus of personal and group identity. Unlike most other indigenous tribes whose lives are tied to lands, the Makah people have long placed marine space at the center of their culture, finding in their own waters the physical and spiritual resources to support themselves. This book is the first to explore the history and identity of the Makahs from the arrival of maritime fur-traders in the eighteenth century through the intervening centuries and to the present day. Joshua L. Reid discovers that the "People of the Cape" were far more involved in shaping the maritime economy of the Pacific Northwest than has been understood. He examines Makah attitudes toward borders and boundaries, their efforts to exercise control… Read More

London: Methuen, 1914. 4th Edition . Hardcover. Good / Fair. Fourth edition. Hardback, bound in dark green cloth with gilt titling to spine. 19.5 × 13cm, 442pp + 31pp ads. Conrad's Secret Agent is a story woven around an attack on the Greenwich Observatory in 1894 masterminded by Verloc, a Russian spy working for the police, and ostensibly a member of an anarchist group in Soho. His masters instruct him to discredit the anarchists in a humiliating fashion, and when his evil plan goes horribly awry, Verloc must deal with the repercussions of his actions. While rooted in the Edwardian period, Conrad's tale remains strikingly contemporary, with its depiction of Londoners gripped by fear of the terrorists living in their midst. London: Unwin Paperbacks, 1981. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good Plus. First edition. 19.5 × 12.5cm, 112pp. This copy has been signed by Gweno Lewis, the widow of Alun Lewis, directly to the title page. Alun and Gweno met in 1939 and married in 1941. In 1942 Alun Lewis's regiment shipped to India and she was never to see him again, he died in Burma in 1944. Gweno lived until 2016, working to keep her husband's poetry in print, including this collection in 1981. This copy comes from the library of Anne Powell, anthologist, author and historian of both the First and Second World Wars. This collection presents a generous choice of Alun Lewis's best poems, and arranges them chronologically for the first time. The selection reveals Lewis, in the words of Jeremy Hooker's perceptive afterword, as 'essentially a poet of feeling' and 'a tender love poet', as well as a poet with a spiritual quest centering on what Lewis called 'the single poetic theme of Love and… Read More

Description:
London: Penguin, 1975. First Edition. . Paperback. Good. First edition. Paperback. 20 × 13cm, 238pp. Published in Penguin's Pelican Original range. Why does the Western world look to migrant labourers to perform the most menial tasks? What compels people to leave their homes and accept this humiliating situation? In A Seventh Man, John Berger and Jean Mohr come to grips with what it is to be a migrant worker - the material circumstances and the inner experience - and, in doing so, reveal how the migrant is not so much on the margins of modern life, but absolutely central to it. This finely wrought exploration remains as urgent as ever, presenting a mode of living that pervades the countries of the West and yet is excluded from much of its culture. Condition: A good reading copy. The covers are a little creased and rubbed but the book remains in strong readable condition.
