Description:
New York: N.P., 1975. Very good. 8½" x 5½". Stapled self-wrappers. Publication sequence: Issue #s 13, 14, [15], [16] (December 1974-March 1975). 20-24 pages per issue. Very good: moderate wear, occasional minor spots of soiling. This is a run of several early issues of SMads, a BDSM personal ads service. According to more than one leather history website as well as the Leather Archives & Museum, SMads was edited by Marshall Loeb and was in publication from 1972 to 1987. According to an article in Drummer 41 (November 1980), SMads was, in its time, "the most upfront collection of sexuality available. Every specific sexual desire, from basic S&M to scat and water sports, heavy bondage to shaving and piercing appeared in its pages." Each issue is filled with exceptionally explicit personal ads, but there is much more here for the careful researcher, e.g. an ad for "an S/M ranch in Texas with barn, corral, cattle, gear and equipment has openings for slaves." There are also ads for more than one… Read More

Description:
Austin, Texas: Samuel Huston College, 1933. Good. 13 7/8" x 10½". Newsprint. Pp. [4]. Good: heavily creased at old folds with a few small tears at intersections, removing one word of text; 1.5" tear to front not affecting legibility; edge wear; spotted and toned. This is a rare issue of the official publication of Samuel Huston College, the precursor to Huston-Tillotson University (HTU) in Austin, Texas. It was edited by a young man who went on to become a widely influential African American orator and minister, role model to Jackie Robinson and the youngest college president in the United States, Karl Downs. Downs' life was cut short when he died at the age of 35 after being denied life-saving medical care because of his race. HTU, the first institution of higher learning in Austin, was formed in 1952 when two HBCUs came together: Samuel Huston College (SHC), chartered in 1876, and Tillotson College. A notable alumnus (and former president) of SHC, Karl Downs was the editor-in-chief of this… Read More

San Francisco: Carl E. Jordan, 1972. Newsprint. pp. 15. Very good with light toning to outermost leavs and a tiny tear to the cover page. This is an issue of the short-lived San Francisco Forum which touted itself as "The Independent Community Newspaper" for San Francisco. Its premier issue contained a short history of how the paper came about, as well as its purpose: [i]"the idea of the FORUM was born amid reports of long continuing strife rampant within the bowels of other publications. In addition to the searing dissention [sic] within the management of our community newspapers there exists the counter-productive and egocentric mismanagement of the major social organizations within our community. As a result the public has been exposed to . . . biased reporting and the effective silencing of the distasteful truths. Description:
Berkeley/Sonoma, CA: Ladies Against Women/National Rutabaga Co. (printers), 1985. Very good. 21½" x 21½". Cotton banner. Very good with creases at folds and a few soil spots. This is a humorous, tongue-in-cheek banner or bandanna printed on cotton by Ladies Against Women (LAW), a satirical performance group from Berkeley, California. Organized in 1980, LAW were known as a "political parody troupe" who performed throughout the Bay Area. In 1984 they traveled to Dallas for the Republican National Convention and organized a "deficit bake sale," setting up an ironing board outside a prayer breakfast organized by President Reagan and selling Hostess Twinkies for $9 billion each. The most recent coverage we could find of the group was for a performance in 1992, though their (minimalist) website shows comments as late as 2020. A 1991 newspaper article quoted a male audience member who found them to be "about 15 percent funny. They could have balanced their attack better against men." The banner… Read More

Description:
Boston: Cummings, Hilliard, & Co, 1823. Ninth Edition. Good. 9½" x 6¼". Thin card wrappers. Eight double-page maps hand-colored in outline. Good: wrappers heavily soiled and separated from text block but attached to each other; three maps with chipping to edges, outside map boundaries; map of Europe with a 3" split at fold; light to moderate dust soiling and offsetting throughout. This is an uncommon book of maps, owned and notated by a Harriet Tousley or Towsley, a woman in her 20s in Ellisburg, New York in the 1820s. The book consists of eight double-page maps including North America and the United States. It was published to accompany the textbook, Cummings' Ancient and Modern Geography, and Tousley noted in this copy that she had purchased both. Her other notes include a date (September 1827) and a fact: "Mississippi River is the largest in the United States of America." Tousley also made notes on geography inside the rear wrapper: "New York Philadelphia Boston Baltimore Charleston and New… Read More

Description:
[Dearborn, Michigan], 1971. Good. 11 5/8" x 9" commercially produced faux leather photograph album containing 70 leaves with 49 photographs, 32 items of ephemera, and news clippings, taped or pasted in. Most photos measure 5¼" x 3¼" or 8" x 10". Album good: lacking backstrip and moderately worn and soiled. Internally very good with moderate edge wear to one item, some items loose, and some offsetting from newspaper clippings. This is a scrapbook documenting the first three years of the Youth Group of the Dearborn Association for Retarded Children (YDARC), which formed in 1969. The Dearborn Association for Retarded Children (DARC) was formally established in 1954, following a 1950 incident in which seven children were dismissed from the Dearborn Public Schools Special Program. According to the Arc Dearborn website, after the incident several local families came together to create services and programs for their intellectually disabled loved ones. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings,… Read More

Description:
Houston,Texas, 1929. Good. 39 loose leaves from a scrapbook, 60 pages with handwriting and/or ephemera. Scrapbook includes 17 items of ephemera, three photographs, seven items clipped from school publications and 14 news clippings. Good: edges of all leaves with insect predation. usually impacting text on a page; ephemera generally good or better, a few items fair due to losses. This is a wonderful scrapbook documenting a segregated high school in Houston, Texas that was compiled by a young woman, Eula Mae Cotton. It was compiled beginning just two years after Phyllis Wheatley High School (PWHS) was established in January 1927 and at a time when the school did not issue yearbooks, making this an important primary source. Eula Mae listed the names of all faculty and staff and secured at least 19 inscriptions from them. Several of these teachers later had schools named for them such as J.C. Sanderson and J.C. McDade. McDade wrote in the book, "in every moment of our lives we should be trying to… Read More

Description:
N.P.: N.P., 1960. Very good. 20 film slides, each measuring 1½" x 1½" in mounts measuring 2" x 2". Very good plus with minor wear. This is an anonymously produced set of slide transparencies on hand-colored film that were likely used to train female secretaries. The first slide has a cartoon image of a young woman with a stack of papers and the words "Girl Friday," a known colloquialism for a female helper or office assistant. The remaining slides feature more cartoon images as well as text that depict facets of the job such as "Writes letters," "Dictation" and "Proofread." There are also tips and instructions like "Must use good grammar," "Smile" and "Must be pleasant." An artifact of another era, with a touch of chauvinism, related to training young women in an office setting. We'd like to think their use led directly to the creation of the next item on offer, but we just made that up.

[Mexico]: [Cieneguita Copper Company?], 1900. Very good. 11 photographs, each measuring 2¼" x 7" and mounted on thick card measuring 5¼" x 10½". All but one with extensive detailed captions. Photos near fine, cards very good -a bit wavy with light edge wear and small flecks of surface loss on versos. This is a group of 11 photographs which depict the Chipiona mining district in Mexico around the turn of the 20th century. Evidence in the captions suggest they were prepared by a surveyor or mining engineer with an eye toward further operational development. The images may have been compiled by an employee of the Arizona-based Cieneguita Copper Company (CCC) as the company had a significant operation in Chipiona at the time. According to a 1906 article in The Engineering and Mining Journal, CCC's Cieneguita's operations had: "four wood-burning reverberatory smelting furnaces, two reverberatory roasters and some 50 roasting stalls. A steam plant, gravity incline and several work shops are in… Read More

Description:
[San Antonio, Texas]: China War Relief Association of San Antonio, 1938. 8½" x 7". Initially stapled wrappers, now lacking staples. Pp. [104]. Good: front wrapper heavily chipped affecting title characters; first four pages also heavily chipped costing some text but not significantly affecting readability; 2 inch tear to four leaves; scattered small tears or chips not affecting text; lacks a rear wrapper but we do not know if it was issued with one. This is a rare work created by an even rarer population: Chinese residents of San Antonio, Texas in the late 1930s. It's a relic of China's "national salvation movement" and the organization that created it, the China War Relief Association of San Antonio (CWRASA). The CWRASA in turn arose from a refined system of Chinese organizations in America which supported China in resisting Japanese aggression. Starting in the early 20th century, Chinese in the United States would band together to denounce Japanese aggression towards China, as well as express… Read More

[Poston Interment Camp, Arizona]:[circa 1944-1945]. Cotton shirt measuring 20" from tip of collar to waist, and 16" from shoulder to shoulder. Good: stained and lacking buttons. This is a button down shirt with the embroidered signatures of 46 Japanese Americans we believe were interned at the Poston War Relocation Center. Poston was the largest of the Japanese-American internment camps with a peak population of over 17,000, most of whom were from Southern California. Built by Del Webb of retirement community fame, it was on built on the land of the Colorado River Reservation when the government took control of 71,000 acres. The "227 " embroidered on the back just below the collar is an homage to the first group of Japanese Americans that were forced to evacuate, on six days notice: the 227 residents of Bainbridge Island in Washington state. The island actually held 276 Japanese Americans and those who were away during the expulsion were not allowed to return. Our attribution of place and date… Read More

Very good plus with light wear and light toning at extremities. This is the program guide for the 1993 March. Its first page is a strongly worded reflection of the LGBTQ community as well as its demands, and stating that "every out lesbian, gay, and bi is a hero." It contains a number of full page ads with position statements, a guide to issues that needed to pushed in Congress and a step-by-step guide on how attendees could help the cause. Several pages are devoted to short biographies of all the rally speakers, and around 30 pages are used to detail an hour by hour description of all the different events. Chicago: Bowles Music House Record Print Shop, 1946. Very good. 12" x 9". Stapled self-wrappers. pp. [16]. Very good: wrappers dust soiled and with a few small chips. This is a program for the 14th Annual Session of National Convention of Gospel Choirs & Choruses Incorporated (NCGCC). The group exists to this day, and per its website was founded in 1933 when choir unions from Chicago, St. Louis and Cincinnati came together to adopt bylaws and elected Thomas A. Dorsey its first president. Not to be confused with the big band leader, Thomas Andrew Dorsey was a musician and composer who was also influential in the development of early blues music and served as the music director for Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church for 50 years. Called the "Father of Gospel Music" by some, and sometimes credited with creating it, Dorsey helped create a movement that popularized gospel blues throughout Black churches in the United States, which in turn influenced American music and society at large. This program is… Read More

[New York, New York]: National Dental Association, 1939. Very good -. 12 1/8" x 9¼". Faux leather over flexible card wrappers. Pp. 88. Very good minus: two tears to front wrapper, repaired earlier with tape, remnants of adhesive to spine on wraps and first leaf, the latter with a closed tear; penciled notation to front wrap and small notations of former ownership to one page; a bit of edge wear and a few scattered creases; lightly toned. This is a heavily illustrated program for an annual convention of an African American group, the National Dental Association (NDA). Brimming with histories, photographic images and illustrated advertisements, the book also serves as a great resource for New York businesses, many of them Black-owned. The history of NDA stems from the 1900 founding of the Washington (D.C.) Society of Col*red Dentists, which was renamed the Robert T. Freeman Dental Society in 1907. From 1913 the group expanded to encompass various state societies, and took the national designation… Read More

Detroit, Michigan: Pan-African Congress, USA, 1975. Very good. 15 3/8" x 11 3/8". Newsprint. Pp. 4. Very good: folded horizontally at center, presumably as issued; lightly toned. This is the first issue of a rare publication produced by an African nationalist group from Detroit, the PanAfrican Congress, USA (PAC). We were able to piece together the fascinating history of PAC through firsthand accounts found online of African students, members and relatives of group leaders. PAC was organized in 1969 by Edward Vaughn and Kwame Atta. Vaughn operated a Black Power bookstore in Detroit and was the executive assistant to Detroit's first African American mayor, Coleman Young. He also served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1979-1980 and 1995-2000. Though PAC was a Black nationalist group with PanAfrican objectives, it was considered to be a mainstream organization. They sponsored refugees from Africa to attend college at Wayne State University in Detroit - in 1975 there were about 200… Read More
