Description:
Viking. First edition published by Viking in 1988. This is a very near fine copy. The jacket is completely unfaded, a very rare attribute with most copies having some sunning at the spine. This copy is the same deep blue tone across all of the jacket. There is tiny amounts of wear to the corner tips. The book is in excellent condition with only a very small handful of tiny flecks to the text block. The copyright page shows a full number line down to 1 as called for, for a first edition. The author Salman Rushdie has signed his name without dedication to the title page. Signed copies have become uncommon in recent times and are scarce in this very near fine condition.  Rushdie's award winning book that has been perceived as blasphemous by some. It has caused controversy and censorship in a handful of countries. Rushdie has been the target of attacks and attempted assassination over it. It was his fourth book where he continued to write within the realms of magic realism. A scarce book… Read More

John Lehmann. 8vo., orange publisher's cloth, with painted green labels decorated in gilt to spine; complete in the original publisher's dust jacket designed by John Minton (9s. 6d. net); pp. [iv], 5-256, endpapers lightly offset; pages evenly, and marginally, toned, a little spotting to the half-title; else a very good copy with slight compression to extremities, the jacket retaining much of its brightness, light nicks and chips to spine ends; verso a little browned; ever-so-slightly dulled along the spine. First edition of Camberton's first novel. Scamp is set in Bloomsbury, Soho, and Fitzrovia, and tells the story of Ivan Ginsberg, who occupies at rat-infested bathroom-kitchen attempting to write stories for a stillborn literary magazine. The novel received mixed reviews upon publication, with Maclaren-Ross claiming that its author "appeared to be devoid of any narrative gift". It was, however, awarded the Somerset Maugham prize the following year. On meeting his… Read More

Nicholas Kaye. First edition published by Nicholas Kaye in 1962. This is a near fine copy. The jacket is crisp and with very little wear at all. There are some handling marks to the back panel otherwise it is excellent and hasn't been price clipped. The book is also in similar condition with only faint foxing marks to the upper text block and handling wear to the first couple of pages. This copy has been signed by BB without dedication to the title page. Overall a collectible near fine copy and rare to find signed.  BB takes a long trip around the remote Scottish Highlands. He has provided 72 black and white illustrations to accompany his recollections of what he saw. A lovely book and particularly so signed and in this condition.  . Near Fine. Description:
George Allen & Unwin Ltd. 8vo., blue publisher's cloth, backstrip lettered and decorated in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket with emblems design by Tolkien; upper edge blue; pp. [vi], 7-365, [ii] complete with folding colour map to rear; five diagrams within the text; spine tips lightly pushed, upper edge a trifle dust-soiled; jacket marginally toned and sunned along spine, with light creasing; very good. First edition, this the domestic issue with the price printed to the front flap (unclipped). Hammond identifies a second issue, intended for export, in which the jacket is left unpriced. The Silmarillion was left unfinished when Tolkien passed away at the age of 81, and so was edited from selected materials and published by his son, Christopher, just four years later. True to his usual style, it is a complex work, divided into five parts, which tells the story of middle earth's ancient history, from the creation of Eä (the world that is), and concluding with an essay… Read More

Hodder and Stoughton. London: Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., 1999  8vo., bright red publisher's boards, backstrip lettered in gilt, with navy endpapers, gold ribbon marker, and unclipped pictorial dust jacket (£9.99) with cover illustration by Andy Bridge, and a brooding black and white photograph of the author to the lower flap by The Douglas Brothers; tiny white mark to upper board, mild compression, ribbon marker a touch frayed, otherwise an essentially fine copy, apparently unread.  Much coveted by Le Carre collectors, this the rare promotional edition, signed by the author to the title page. With full number line 1-10 denoting first impression, this version is the true first, appearing before the release of the trade edition, and with the 'juggling' artwork for the jacket which was later replaced by a gold and black version featuring a spiral staircase.  John Le Carre was the pen name for David J. M. Cornwell, who worked for the Secret Service during WWII as… Read More

J.M. Dent & Sons. First edition published by J.M Dent and Sons in 1911. This is a very good or better copy. The green cloth boards are in excellent shape with no bumps or marks. The spine is lettered in gilt along with a gilt motif. The front board is lettered in black. A first issue copy. The pages have scattered foxing in places and the front and last end papers have lighter square patches where perhaps a wrapper or insert had sat. All illustrations are present.  1500 copies of the author's first travel book were printed but around 900 were pulped, making copies in decent condition quite rare. Douglas documents his journey through southern Italy. He discusses mythology, folklore, ghosts and patron saints along with a history of the region and detailing of the landscape.  . Very Good. The fourth book in the Hitch Hiker's series, the book marks a shift in tone from Adam's previously cynical depiction of modern technology. Adams had purportedly been taken to a computer fair, in which he became enamored with the first model of the Macintosh, and became one of the first people in the UK to own a Mac.
