Description:
New York: The Albertype Co, 1897. Sewn binding. Very good. Oblong octavo, 19 leaves, including title page, printed rectos only. With an additional folding plate (as issued) depicting a panoramic view, labeled "Sacramento--View Northwest from the Capitol Dome." Views of forts, museums, office buildings, street scenes, etc. Very good in the publisher's gilt-stamped thin brown boards, side-sewn with tightly secured string. Rubbing to edges and corners, but the contents clean. One neat flattened vertical crease to the folding plate (apart from the fold itself). OCLC lists a few publication dates from about 1892-1908 from this publisher. The holdings for this 1897 edition are nearly all in California. Uncommon.

Description:
[Asheville, NC], 1900. Oblong octavo. Photo album with 50 leaves, all used; 104 photographs in all. Generally near fine, with no notable wear to the album. Images all pasted neatly to individual leaves, with some attendant waviness, and occasional fading or mild discoloration to prints (probably from the glue or acidity in the paper). Each image contains a typed caption, pasted below. Most of these are light-hearted and insular, without specifically naming people or places, however there are a number of identified places. Though undated, there are some clues. The Vance Monument (constructed in 1898) is present in a downtown scene, and there are telephone or electrical poles, but vehicles are all horse-drawn wagons, and there is not a car in sight, so the images could hardly date to later than about 1905. Of partocular interest is a group of perhaps two dozen images of the Winyah Sanitarium, one of the first private treatment facilities for tuberculosis in the United States. Not merely a place of… Read More

Description:
[no place - Ann Arbor?]: [Students for a Democratic Society], 1963. First Edition (?). Staplebound. Near fine. Quarto, 12pp. Stapled at the top left corner, with cover leaf. Very near fine, with only the most trivial fading to extremities. A well-preserved early SDS document, which attempts to reframe the major world struggle - understood at this fever pitch of the Cold War to be that of the Communist East against the Capitalist West - as one of the world's poor against the world's wealthy. Discussions of economic development and the possibility of global action to alleviate misery take up the main thrust of the text. As with the Port Huron Statement, an interesting juxtaposition to later SDS material, which necessarily had to focus on the Vietnam War and the FBI/police agitation against their organization. OCLC records perhaps six physical holdings, all at institutions which were hotbeds of radicalism in the 1960s. Uncommon.

Description:
Pittsburgh, PA: Know, Inc, 1971. Offprint. Folded sheets. Near fine. Octavo, 6pp., illustrated. A near fine copy, not bound (as issued), but folded as a pamphlet. Faint stain at the spine, else a clean example. Offprint of the landmark essay by Robin Morgan included in the "women's takeover" issue of the underground magazine "Rat Subterranean News." Morgan's manifesto meant to break with the men who had helmed the radical movements of the late 1960s, who she argues had used their power in personal and political settings to marginalize women within the movement. The takeover issue was a kind of success; they held onto the magazine for a number of issues afterward, but the project fizzled out by late 1972. This offprint is scarce in commerce, and we note just ten physical holdings in libraries according to OCLC, mostly on campuses which were home to wellsprings of 60s radicalism.

Description:
[Washington]: [US House of Representatives], 1822. First Edition. Un-bound. Very good. Octavo, [1], 2-24pp. Folding chart laid-in. Un-bound; three unopened and untrimmed gatherings, which were likely to be side-stitched or bound into a larger volume, though this was never done. Very good; some foxing and marginal soiling, but a complete and generally clean example of this rare document of the claims made by Tennessee militia members who had fought against the Seimnole tribe in Florida under Andrew Jackson. The legal question centers on whether volunteer militiamen who lose horses and other valuables should be compensated by the government for their losses. A large folding chart is titled "Statement of the number of Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Gunmen in the service of the United States during the war against the Seminole Indians, from accounts filed in the office of the Second Auditor of the Treasury." Description:
(Waynesboro, PA): [not published], 1942. Good. Octavo, bound with two metal tabs at the spine. [5]pp. of text, followed by four leaves with tipped-in silver gelatin print photographs with printed captions. Binding in poor condition, with covers and a few leaves detached, but no content conspicuously missing. Text and potographs well-preserved; overall in good condition. A unique typescript report on the sewage plant just south of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, ust about a decade following its original construction. The text is brief, and ever so slightly juvenile in tone, so this was likely a high school report, or possibly some other kind of research project. Nevertheless, the structure and fuction of the plant is well-described, and the four photograhs clearly show what the author describes as the four "Main Divisions" of the plant, namely: the Screen Chamber, the Digester, the Control House, and the Rotary Distributor. Though fragile, still a great piece of midcentury vernacular photography… Read More

Description:
New York: Grover & Baker Sewing Machine Co, 1860. Sewn binding. Very good. 16mo (about 3.75" x 5.75"), 30pp., illustrated. Very good in the original sewn wrappers. A few minor stains and faint general foxing, but a clean, sound example. Scarce little pamphlet with detailed county-by-county data from the previous three presidential elections, in anticipation of what would be one of the most consequential elections in American history, the 1860 context between Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. The pamphlet's purpose is two-fold, however, as it advertises sewing machines from the Grover and Baker company, including numerous testimonials printed among the election data, and also several engraved images of various models. Primarily an advertisement for the company, produced at their expense, but designed to hook in the politics junkie amid the fervor of the 1860 election. Perhaps a dozen copies located in OCLC, and some of these may be digital holdings. Not separately catalogued by AAS.

Marshall, Michigan: [No publisher given - likely self-published], 1903. First Edition. Staplebound. Very good. Slim 16mo, 32pp., illustrated. Very good in the publisher's red printed stapled wraps. Faint dampstain on the rear wrap, not affecting the interior, and there is a printer's error resulting in some creasing and disjointed type on page 9, which is frustrating to the eye, but still legible with some patient attention (affects only on esentence). A very curious and very uncommon volume of medical quackery, advertising the author's invention, an electric machine designed to "invigorate" the male organs. We found just one copy in OCLC (University of Michigan), and none in commerce at the time of listing. Atwater S-244.2.

London: Barker Motion Photography, 1915. First Edition. Sewn binding (disbound). Good-. Oblong large octavo, unpaginated [35pp.]. A good copy at best in the publisher's swen wraps with yapped edges. Edges cuopped and the sewing missing, thus the book is laid-into the wraps. The contents themselves are in lovely condition, and we presume it is complete, although of this we can't be completely sure. A wonderful promotional booklet for the 1915 adaptation of the story of Jane Shore starring Blanche Forsythe and Roy Travers. Of the 35 leaves (printed rectos only), 29 are comprised of 6" x 5" (150mm x 125mm) photographic prints, tipped onto leaves with black borders and captions. These prints depict shots from the motion picture. The brief text gives the story's background, the cast, etc. We were unable to locate the pamphlet in broad searches in OCLC, indicating a highly ephemeral and scarce document of early silent film. Though regrettably disbound, still wuite clean and… Read More

Cambridge [MA]: Sever and Francis, 1863. First American Edition. Sewn binding. Very good +. 12mo, 107pp. A mildly ex-library copy, with a few discreet marginal stamps and perforation to the margin of the first text leaf, otherwise crisp, clean, and sound in the original sewn binding with perfectbound wraps. Very light dust-soiling to the wraps, and a thin marginal dampstain affecting hte first few dozen leaves; overall very good or slightly better. A scarce treatise analyzing the Old and New Testaments for their views on slavery. The author is clearly against the institution, and naturally finds much in both Testaments that either condemns or at least severely restricts it. Despite this admirable throughline, there is at least a hint of the author's well-known anti-Semitism, and he throws a few punches at the Jews. In any event, a scarce volume on the slavery question, published during the middle of the war by an Anglo-Canadian. Though well-distributed in libraries, we found none in commerce as of… Read More

Description:
[Washington, DC]: (Congressional Globe Office), 1852. First Edition. Self-wrappers. Good. Tall octavo, 7pp. A good copy in self-wrappers. Dust-soiled with the mildest foxing to the front leaf, and some gentle creasing and chipping to the extremities. Some modest, but notable tears alng the folds. A tender, but intact copy. Dust-soil could be mostly removed with careful (and time-consuming) erasure. A scarce pamphlet (Sabin 90237), with several remarks about slavery and "negroes," with the North Carolinian Stanly intending to denigrate Giddings by calling him "[not a free Democrat, but a "free negro Democrat]." Though the subject of the debate largely concerns personal character and personal conduct, the presence of slavery and looming conflict seeps through the procedings. Fewer than a dozen copies lited in worldwide library holdings, and none in the marketplace at the time of listing.

Gazankulu, South Africa: Self-published, 1989. First Edition. Near fine. Quarto, unpaginated [32pp.], illustrated. Near fine in the original presentation folder with plastic covers. In September 1989, this reptile research center in Gazankulu, South Africa burned down due to an electrical fire, and thousands of reptiles burned to death. This "manifesto" is a plea for help to rebuild the facility, and gives an outline of its work and goals. Most interesting are the illustrations, which consist of seven real color photographic prints of the facility both before and after the fire. An interesting piece of South African history, dating from the very end of the Apartheid era. This presentation was likely produced in a small group of perhaps a few dozen or so. Searching by title, we found no copies in worldwide libraries.

[Johannesburg?]: [Self-published], 1944. First Edition. Staplebound. Very good. Octavo, 20pp., illustrated. Very good in the publisher's printed staped wraps, with some mild creases. Very faint tobacco odor. A dos-a-dos pamphlet, in English and Afrikaans, which outlines the aims and purposes of the South African Legion of the British Empire Services League. This organization, which remains in existence today, is the oldest independent veteran's organization in South Africa. Printed during World War II, when South Africa's military allegiance was split between Axis and Allied powers, this pamphlet is a heartfelt call for civility and respect towards South African war veterans of all backgrounds. While printed a few years before the official beginning of Apartheid, the nation was effectively living under white minority rule. Still, this organization was committed to being "non-political, non-racial, and non-sectarian," as stated in all capital letters on page 2 of this pamphlet.… Read More

Description:
Asheville, NC: Asheville Messenger Office (for the author), 1850. First Edition. Disbound. Good-. Octavo, 16pp. Disbound, and clearly removed from a sammelband, though essentially intact. Heavily age-toned, with some abrasions to the text in some places, though it's entirely legible. Some light pencil notations to the first leaf. Wanting wrappers (if indeed issued with same). In good condition at best. Extremely scarce pamphlet, in which the slaveholding but deeply pro-Union North Carolina state Representative John Baxter attacks the rebellious opinions of US Representative Thomas Lanier Clingman. Though printed ten years before the Civil War, the battle lines have clearly been drawn. Carefully tiptoeing around the issue of slavery and abolition (though not ignoring them), Baxter hits Clingman hard on his extremism and hypocrisy; often comaparing his rigidity to that of abolitionists, with whom Baxter had little in common. Later, when North Carolina secedes, Baxter gave up his unionist campaign and… Read More

Washington DC: U. S. Treasury Department Bureau of Engraving and Printing, 1875. Hardcover. Near fine. Small quarto, unpaginated. Bound in full red crushed morocco, with gilt borders, edges, spine title, and compartments. All edges gilt. 144 engravings, plus frontispiece and engraved title page. A near fine example, with some small nicks to the boards, and some mild scattered foxing internally. An extraordinary volume, one of a small and undetermined number of these U. S. Treasury specimen books. These were printed and bound by the Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and presented to a select few diplomats, cabinet secretaries, and members of Congress. The proof engravings contained within were designed for use on official US banknotes, though some of the images were likely never used on actual money. At the turn of the 21st century, numismatic experts had counted 47 known examples. Several more have come to auction (primarily numismatic) since then, but they remain extremely… Read More
