(xxxix), 475, XVIII pp., new intro, index, maps Originally written as a series of monographs on outstanding Chatham County plantations, this work turned out to be, under the sponsorship of the WPA and the Georgia Historical Society, a complete history of the great plantations of the area around Savannah. This is a reprint of the 1947 edition to which has been added as an introductory essay, "Plantation Development in Chatham County," from the December 1938 issue of The Georgia Historical Quarterly. Reviewers have cited this volume as having a "usefulness which extends to students of the plantation… Read More

Orig. pub. Selma, AL, 1879. Reprinted 1978. Print on Demand Edition 2017. xviii, 218 pp., new intro., new index This reprint edition of the first comprehensive history of Selma, Alabama, contains a new introduction to the work and its author and a new index. The history traces the development of the community "from one or two loghouses in 1815 to a populous and wealthy city in 1879." Selma was a center of commerce, the iron industry, and the slave trade and rendered important service to the Confederacy. Chapters concerning municipal government, railroads and manufacturing, churches and Sabbath schools, social organizations, Blacks, and biographical sketches of the founding and leading citizens of Selma are included. As founder and editor of the weekly newspaper, the Selma Sentinel, and mayor of the city from 1873 to 1875, Hardy had a full set of municipal records when he began his work. Most of those records have subsequently been lost or destroyed and his book preserves early incidents in the life… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. 1983.. Print on Demand Edition 2015. Five volumes, 2000+ pages, illus. Available by volume. These four volumes of genealogies of South Carolina families are reprinted from past issues of the South Carolina Historical (and Genealogical) Magazine. Since the beginning of the magazine in 1900, approximately 2000 pages of carefully compiled family genealogies have appeared in the journal representing altogether 75 family history articles of an average length of 20-25 pages. Many of the articles are the work of A.S. Salley and Mabel Webber, both well known as genealogists and the first two editors (1900-1908, 1909-1941) of the magazine. Prior to this publication in 1983, these articles had never before been combined into book form. Many of the articles contain material on more than one family; thus, the decision was made that a new consolidated index was necessary. This every-name index contains approximately 30,000 individuals and 3000 families. Families who are the subject of separate… Read More
