From Back: Dr. David Elcott, one of the great contemporary teachers of Judaism, confronts the most basic Jewish question of our time; can the Jewish story provide meaning to human beings living in North America at the end of the twentieth century? His book-length answer, an emphatic yes, constitutes a profound meditation on the power of ideas, such as covenant, creation in God's image, and commitment to justice, to shape not only individual lives, but also an entire people, and through them the world. You can feel the tightness of NEW.The Jewish tradition is rich in folklore and story, as contemporary anthologists/ re-tellers such as Howard Schwartz have shown. This new collection, compiled and retold by two rabbis, is the first (known to this reviewer) to be organized by life stages-birth, circumcision, bar mitzvah, love and marriage, divorce, conversion, old age, and death-and is meant to provide background or ancillary reading for the ritual events that commemorate these stages. The often lively tales chosen from a wide assortment of biblical, Talmudic, and folkloric sources do indeed help to illuminate the Jewish life cycle. In the minds of many, his name has come to symbolize courage and vision at the service of our age-old dream of peace on earth. No statesman today seems to have so many of the right admirers -- and the right enemies. But Dr. Paul Eidelberg, writing in the tradition of those clear-sighted observers who exposed the machinations of other dictators, has accumulated startling evidence that Sadat's strategy of "peace" is in fact a preparation for war against Israel. She show that this strategy -- an application of the German concept of realpollitik -- involves the skillful se of Western idealism and Soviet power for Egyṕtian purposes. And he concludes with positive, concrete suggestions on how American and Israel, working together, can counter the Sadat strategy.… Read More

In his narrative, he shows how UNSCOM dealt with Iraq's devious, despotic regime: the early frustrations encountered because of Iraq's lying and obstruction; the techniques and technologies inspectors employed; the personal difficulties and dangers of the job; and their ingenuity in tackling problems. The book also shows how the Commission maintained support in a divided UN Security Council long enough to achieve success, despite the ceaseless stream of international crises unleashed by Iraq to try and break the Commission. Christian Exercises in Eastern Form Truly a one-of-a-kind, how-to-do-it book, this small volume responds to a very real hunger for self-awareness and holistic living. It consists of a series of spiritual exercises for entering the contemplative state -- blending psychology, spiritual therapy, and practices from both Eastern and Western traditions.Anthony de Mello offers here an unparalleled approach to inner peace that brings the whole person to prayer -- body and soul, heart and mind, memory and imagination. In forty-seven exercises that teach things such as awareness of physical sensations, stillness, healing of hurtful memories, and consciousness of self and world, de Mello succeeds in helping all who have ever experienced prayer as difficult, dull, or frustrating. The essential key, he notes, is to journey beyond mere thought-forms and discover satisfying… Read More

"Eric Lee"Although written for an Israeli audience, U.S. readers can appreciate the stories of 18 very different American Jews who served in Vietnam and later emigrated to Israel. Perhaps if Lee, the staff writer at Al Hamishmar newspaper in Israel, had expanded the scope to include Jewish veterans of Vietnam who continue to reside in the United States, the study might have had more impact and usefulness for an American audience. The book remains compelling reading nonetheless. The Vietnam War was the most gruesome experience for each of these men--far more dramatic than any they endured while fulfilling their Israeli military obligations. They are all encouraged by the increased awareness of the Vietnam legacy by both Americans and Israelis, although some have deep doubts that the war will ever be truly understood.
