Description:
This is one of a mint-condition set of three matching books by the American author William Faulkner (1897-1962). They are first reissues, by his publisher (Random House) of Sanctuary, Light in August and The Sound and the Fury. They are simple red matte boards with gold lettering on the cover and spine. Lovely paper.
They do not appear to have been read. If you want more than one, let me know. They're listed here under American Fiction.
This is a Sanctuary, the famous novel by the American author William Faulkner (1897-1962). It is about the abduction and rape of a well-bred Mississippi college girl, Temple Drake, during the Prohibition era. First published in 1931, it is considered one of his more controversial works, but it was his commercial and critical breakthrough, establishing his literary reputation. When it was made into a movie in 1933, it was the reason for the Motion Picture Production Code crackdown on risque subject matter.

Description:
Sard Harker is an adventure novel by the British writer and poet John Masefield. It was published in 1924 and was a best-seller, quickly gaining a reputation for being 'hard to put down'. It was reprinted several times; this book is dated 1924, but is the third impression, printed two months after the book's release.
Sard Harker is the first of three Masefield novels set in the fictional South American nation of Santa Barbara. It is a maritime adventure, but also about visions and dreams and the futures men and women create for themselves. For Sard, that entails a movement from a narrow vision of himself as a seaman to a new wider view of the world and life on shore.
This copy is not in the best of shape. There is significant dappling/foxing on the interior pages, there is a small ink mark on the back cover and the spine is faded and a little stained. It's still perfectly readable.

Description:
This is a lovely leather-bound copy of the classic novel The Scarlet Letter: A Romance, a work of historical fiction by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). First published in 1850, it is set in Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642 to 1649, and tells the story of Hester Prynne who conceives a daughter through an affair and then struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. Containing a number of religious and historic allusions, the book explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt.
This copy was published in 1979 by the Franklin Library (Franklin Mint). It is dark red leather with an elaborate gold design on the cover and spine. It has a bound-in silk bookmark.
Inside, the book is perfect. Lovely thick paper, creamy white. Chapter headings are in red. Marbelized endpapers. There are several illustrations but I don't want to pick through the book to count how many there are.
Although it has a bookplate on the inside front cover (which you can remove), it has… Read More

Description:
This is two first American editions from Sir Osbert Sitwell (1892-1969), the British aristocrat who is known for documenting the Edwardian era, and then the War Years. His best-known works include his 4-volume autobiography. This set is volumes #2 and #3 of that autobiography.
The Scarlet Tree, published in 1946, describes the Edwardian part of his upbringing, not sparing his eccentric, self-indulgent and unreasonable parents. It's quite funny.
Great Morning!, published in 1947, covers the period just before the First World War, and finishes with its outbreak. As with the earlier volumes it's a vivid picture of the vanished world of Edwardian excess, told in a light-hearted manner.
The original owner of these books must have been a friend of Sitwell's, or at least a great admirer. In the case of The Scarlet Tree, he has cut out a newspaper photo of Sitwell and pasted it onto the title page. He has also included a review of the book from The Saturday Review, by Charles Rolo, dated June 22, 1946.

Description:
This is a first edition of Scotland's Empire, a dazzling account of Scotland's role in the world by Scotland's bestselling historian.
The Scots had an enormous impact on the global development of the British Empire as emigrants, soldiers, merchants and colonial administrators. Devine's work is a powerful and highly readable contribution Scottish diaspora studies and towards a reevaluation of Scotland's role in the empire. By emphasizing the global spread of the Scots, Devine teases out the impact of the Scots who migrated to the US, Canada, Australia and the Caribbean and the role Scottish culture and education played in shaping the places they went. Furthermore, Devine's background in economic history allows the disproportionate benefits Scotland gained from participation in the British imperial project to be drawn out. Scots participated significantly in the Atlantic slave trade, and Glasgow in particular gained from the funds generated by Scottish control of the Virginia tobacco trade. Devine's… Read More

Description:
This is a first edition of Scotland Farewell: The People of the Hector, written in 1980 by the Canadian journalist Donald MacKay (1925-2011). The book was a best-seller and was re-issued in 2006.
It is the story of the Highland Scots who sailed to Pictou, Nova Scotia, in 1773 aboard the brig Hector. These intrepid emigrants came for many reasons: the famine of the previous spring, pressures of population growth, intolerable rent increases, trouble with the law, the hunger of landless men to own land of their own. Upon arrival at Pictou, after an appalling storm-tossed crossing, they found they had been deceived. The promised prime farming land turned out to be virgin forest. Only the kindness of the Mi'kmaq and the few New Englanders already settled there enabled them to survive until they learned how to exploit the forests and clear land. But survive they did, and their prosperity encouraged shiploads of emigrants, many fellow clansmen, to join them, making northeastern Nova Scotia a true New… Read More

From a review:
I'll give it five stars for the uniquely detailed information on important maritime archaeological digs of recent history. The chapters on Mediterranean finds in the early days of scuba/aqualung exploration were totally fascinating. The details of each dig were completely overwhelming and I had to start glossing over all the technical minutiae if I was ever going to get through it, but the highlights of historical maritime archaeology was well worth the overall read.
