Description:
Constable, London., 1924. First edition. Folio. pp [vi], 183. 16 tipped-in colour plates by Charles Ricketts. One of 750 copies printed on hand-made paper. Designer binding by Gisele Aron executed by Zaehnsdorf probably in the 1950's: full cream and tan calf tooled in gilt and in blind, the title in red morocco inlaid on upper cover. Top edge gilt. Silk-covered endpapers, followed by another set of endpapers with a fleur-de-lys design. Most of the plates are creased at the bottom left corner, but only a couple of them significantly so. This seems to be a common problem with this book - we've never seen a copy where the plates haven't been affected in this way. Spine a little scuffed and tanned. Slight spotting to the prelims. Very good indeed in black buckram slipcase.

The printed dedication reads, ''To Raymond Mortimer - Mercuri - nam te docilis magistro...'' ''Tray'' was the nickname given to Mortimer by Harold Nicolson and his wife Vita Sackville-West. By this time Mortimer and Nicolson had been conducting a homosexual relationship for at least thirty years. The latter was apparently the first person to use the word ''doriphore'' in English. He borrowed it from the French where it means Colorado beetle. On the rear endpapers are a few pencilled notes by Mortimer who has also marked several passages in the text.Edges spotted.
