Sailing Alone Around the World - Voyage of the Liberdade
Author: Joshua Slocum
Collier Books, copyright 1958
Paperback
4.1 x 7 inches, 382 pages

In April 1895, at the age of fifty one, Joshua Slocum departed Boston in his thirty six foot sloop Spray, a derelict boat he had rebuilt himself. Three years and 46000 miles later he returned, having accomplished one of the greatest feats in maritime history- to become the first person to circumnavigate the globe single handedly. To crown his achievement, Slocum wrote this remarkable account of his voyage. An instant best seller, Sailing Alone Around the World is now regared as one of literature's greatest voyage narratives.

Despite having only a third-grade education, Slocum was as gifted a writer as he was a shipwright and navigator. In clear and vigorous prose, he paints a vivid, even poetic picture of his voyage, with its many breathtaking sights and harrowing adventures - including skirting the paradisiacal South Sea islands, braving terrifying storms… Read More

THIS IS A BOOK OF LINED PAGES - NO TEXT, NO ILLUSTRATIONS

The Sandhills, often written Sand Hills, is a region of mixed-grass prairie on grass-stabilized sand dunes in
north-central Nebraska, covering just over one quarter of the state. The dunes were designated a
National Natural Landmark in 1984.

Small ponds and lakes are common in the Sand Hills, such as this one near Antioch.

The boundaries of the Sandhills are variously defined by different organizations. Depending on the definition,
the region's area can be as small as 19,600 sq mi or as large as 23,600 sq mi.

Dunes in the Sandhills may exceed 330 ft in height. The average elevation of the region
gradually increases from about 1,800 ft in the east to about 3,600 ft in the west.

The Sandhills sit atop the massive Ogallala Aquifer; thus both temporary and permanent shallow lakes are
common in low-lying valleys between… Read More

The occasion was the opening of a new exhibition at the Baku Art Museum. Sattar had submitted one of his paintings-a view of the sea-but the work had been rejected. One of the organizing committee members told him that he had "misinterpreted" nature and that his painting needed more work."You people paint landscapes without even leaving your studios," Sattar shot back. "You just copy from postcards and photographs. I don't think you even know what nature looks like!" Suddenly, he kicked his painting, damaging it, and stomped off. This confrontation, which happened in the 1950s, illustrates Sattar's passion to create art on his own terms. The Saxons were a group of Germanic peoples whose name was given in the early Middle Ages to a large country (Old Saxony, Latin: Saxonia) near the North Sea coast of northern Germania, in what is now Germany. In the late Roman Empire, the name was used to refer to Germanic coastal raiders, and as a name similar to the later "Viking". Their origins are believed to be in or near the German North Sea coast where they appear later, in Carolingian times. In Merovingian times, continental Saxons had been associated with the activity and settlements on the coast of what later became Normandy. Their precise origins are uncertain, and they are sometimes described as fighting inland, coming into conflict with the Franks and Thuringians. There is possibly a single classical reference to a smaller homeland of an early Saxon tribe, but its interpretation… Read More
