This remarkable little item is a booksellerÂ’s catalogue titled “SOME FIRST EDITIONS OF ROBERT FROST AND OTHER MATERIAL FOR FROST COLLECTORS”. What renders this catalogue noteworthy is the date – 1937. This was more than a quarter of a century before Frost died, in the year he was to win the third of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry, only half way through the literary career that began with the 1913 publication of A BoyÂ’s Will, and well before he had become “the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century”. The wire-stitched catalogue of bookseller “Thomas B. Hitchcock” of “Brookline, Mass.” measures 5.125 x 8.125 inches (13 x 20.6 cm) bound in and printed on heavy cream stock consisting of 16 pages (including the wraps). This is the second paperback edition of Churchill's third published book and only novel (the first paperback edition being published 49 years earlier in 1908). Condition is very good for a paperback of this vintage. The binding is square and tight. The illustrated covers are bright and clean, showing only light wear at the hinges and extremities. We note no vertical creasing to the spine, indicating that this copy is unread. The contents are inevitably age-toned, but otherwise fine with no spotting or previous ownership marks. When Savrola was first published in February 1900, a very young Churchill was exuberant. Even though Savrola was his third published book, it was actually the first book he undertook and the second he completed. His “Tale of the Revolution in Laurania” is a melodramatic tale of political intrigue in a fictional Mediterranean state. Bath: Cedric Chivers, 1973. Hardcover. This is an elusive modern reprint of Churchill's third book and only novel. This 1973 edition was published by Cedric Chivers of Portway and Bath and is quite scarce. The striking dust jacket bears a color illustration from the story. The binding is dark red cloth stamped in gilt. Here is a respectable but imperfect jacketed ex-library copy, both volume and dust jacket in very good minus condition. The red cloth binding remains square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note only minor wrinkling to the spine ends and a small lower front cover blemish. The contents are substantially clean, a “WITHDRAWN” ink stamp on the front pastedown and some scarring on the front free endpaper recto, likely from some removed ex-library material tipped in. Spotting is substantially confined to the page edges. The illustrated dust jacket remains bright, clean, and unclipped with minor wear and only trivial loss to a few points along the top edge. This well-worn survivor is a rare prize – the first edition, first printing, Colonial issue of Winston ChurchillÂ’s only novel, far rarer than its U.S. or British first edition counterparts. Only 1,670 Colonial editions were issued in this illustrated hardcover binding - and this small number includes the second and third printings. The survival rate was poor given the tropical climates in much of the colonies. Those few examples that do survive are often quite worn and re-backed or re-bound. This is an original, unrestored copy, sound and complete though in poor condition, clearly having endured customary depredations of age and use. First printing is confirmed by the absence of the words "NEW IMPRESSION" on the title page. This is the first state of the 1915 Hodder & Stoughton “Sevenpenny Library Edition” of Churchill's third book and only novel, extremely scarce thus in the strikingly illustrated dust jacket. This is an aesthetically pleasing little book measuring 6.625 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide (17 x 11.5 cm), bound in a decorated bright red embossed cloth, and with a frontispiece illustration. Worn and soiled copies are not uncommon, but since the edition was small, fragile, and printed on cheap paper, collector-worthy copies have become scarce. Scarcer still is the illustrated dust jacket, the front panel of which features a four-color reproduction of the frontispiece on a red background; in recent decades, we have seen only a tiny handful of copies ever offered on the world market and infer that precious few survive. This is the British first edition of Churchill's third published book and only novel in a magnificent fine binding commissioned by one of the worldÂ’s oldest bookshops. The elegant, red, Morocco goatskin binding features a hubbed spine with blind-ruled compartments, gilt-decorated bands, and gilt lion rampant in each unprinted compartment. The covers feature gilt rule borders, the front cover stamped with ChurchillÂ’s facsimile signature in gilt. The cover edges are gilt tooled and the spine ends gilt hatched. The contents are bound with all edges gilt, red and white silk head and tail bands, and striking marbled endpapers framed by generous gilt ruled and tooled turn-ins. With a gun turret clearly visible in the upper background, FDR is seated in a chair on the deck, with Admiral Chester Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur seated to FDRÂ’s left and right. Churchills war memoirs is inscribed and dated by Churchill. The inscription, inked in blue in three lines on the half-title, reads Inscribed by | Winston S. Churchill | 1953. An autograph signed letter from a previous owner dated 12th August 1978 laid into the volume states: To whom it may concern. Normandy, France: U.S. Army Signal Corps, 1944. Photograph. This is an original Second World War Official U.S. Navy photograph of Allied landings on the beaches at Normandy in France on 6 June 1944. This image, with an armada of ships filing the view to the horizon, conveys a staggering sense of the unprecedented marshalling of personnel and material. Particularly striking are the silver, oval-shaped balloons floating above many of the ships, stretching into the distance. These balloons, known as barrage balloons, provided critical protection to the ships and soldiers below them from attacks by enemy aircraft. Churchills first speech to the U.S. Congress on 26 December 1941, weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Americas formal entry into the Second World War. It was after this speech, immediately following the peroration printed on this poster, that the assembled elected leadership of the United States erupted into a cacophonous roar of applause and approval. The poster measures 24 x 18 inches (60.96 x 45.72 cm). Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. This complete, first edition, first printing set features very good volumes in very good dust jackets. The black cloth bindings are square, tight, and clean with bright spine gilt.
