Description:
Paris. First Edition Presumed. Near Fine. Racy souvenir from an erstwhile rival of the Moulin Rouge in Montmartre. N.d., circa 1950. Unpaginated, 28 pp., plus wraps, which have a suede or felt surface. 10.5 by 8 inches, 27 by 21 cm. The nightclub opened in 1904 and continued in business until 1953 when it was bought and closed by Moulin Rouge. The club was known for its elaborate thematic floor shows, which mixed ballet, cheesecake and spectacular costumes designed by the likes of Erte. A new show was presented each year. After the club closed, it served as the basis of a 1958 movie entitled "Tabarin". The album features color illustrations, all done with a fluid, loose hand, and black and white photographs, which are set amid monochrome sketch work that captures the theatrical flavor of Tabarin. Also six pages of evocative ads, some of which are in keeping in spirit with the rest of the album in their artwork, etc. From the photos one is easily transported back to the pageantry… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Barend Visscher, 1722. Full Calf. Very Good. 8vo. Unpaginated, but 92 leaves, with an illustration covering about two-thirds of every recto, for a total of 92 illustrations of lives of the early Christians, with plenty of gore, torture, and gladiatorial action to make the blood curdle and speak to those with an aversion for the purely devotional. The imagery is well within the tradition of high Dutch Baroque and in this, transcends the subject matter or not infrequently, ties in the subject matter with contemporary Dutch life. Not in Brunet or Landwehr. Some occasional light foxing but mostly clean. Tight. Calf boards appear to have had a coat of shellac or the like slapped on at some point, rendering an appearance not unlike plywood. Spine has dryness and rubbing along joints. Spine label with small chip.

Description:
London: John Warren and G. and W. B. Whittaker, 1821. First Edition. Full Morocco. Near Fine. Beautifully bound in full straight-grained red morocco by Morrell of London with gilt decoration, raised bands, turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Small 4to, 26 by 17 cm. vii, [9], 184 pp. 26 hand-colored plates. Clever humor verse and illustrations exploring various uses of the work "taking", such as taking bets, taking aim, taking advice, taking hints, taking notice, taking thought, taking courage -- a highly original treatment of a versatile, elastic word that surely is consequently elusive to the non-native speaker. Somehow not listed in Tooley. The artist, Richard Dagley, exhibited at the Royal Academy a number of times between 1785 and 1833. Condition: light wear to binding -- corners slightly rubbed. Light and very occasional foxing and other trivial soiling. Essentially clean and tight, and easily Near Fine.

Description:
NA. FIne. N.d., circa 1900. A shaped sales circular, with a picture of a desk lined with books on several shelves. An interesting triple joint promotion -- for soap, a desk and employment! 19 by 21.5 cm when the folding card is open. On the inside is a two page story and sales pitch to potential sales people. Larkin was seeking direct sellers, and the story conclusion is that if you sell for them, you can earn enough to buy the desk.

Description:
Cloth. Very Good. Imaginative, whimsical verse and illustrations of an upper crust rabbit, Pollux, and his frivolous cares and activities. N.d., early 20th century and World War One era. Oblong 4to, 24.5 by 30 cm. 21 pp. (and leaves) of original pen and ink and watercolored drawings. Each page has a mounted illustration, with inked verse next to it, poking fun at Pollux's dress, his vanity, his helplessness, his manners, etc. Other characters include Jenkins, card players, a pining woman, all of whom are rabbits. While we do not know the identity of the cartoonist, the level of work is plausibly professional, with details rendered meticulously. The various verses and illustrations are somewhat loosely linked -- there isn't so much a continuous narrative as much as an overarching archness. The artist and versifier is shooting arrows at the idle nobility. Also included are 10 additional cartoons on separate sheets, only one of which involves Pollux, and only two with colored… Read More

London: James Wallis, 1805. Full Calf. Very Good Plus. Rare with hand-colored plates. 8vo. 20.5 by 13 cm. xliv, 368, 432 pp. Fourteen hand-colored engraved plates. The coloring was done with great care and precision. Morell claimed to be merely collecting the tales from the Indian subcontinent (thus he is credited on the title page merely as the translator from Persian) when in fact he made up the stories himself, inspired by The Arabian Nights, to be sure. The work was first published in 1764, at a time the public was smitten with exotic Orientalia. Rubbing along the joints, and light wear to the cover otherwise.

Description:
1880. Half Morocco. Very Good. With 14 pages of chromolithographic die-cuts. Twelve of these pages are of flowers representing each of the months, the thirteenth is of an elaborate bouquet, and the final leaf is an assortment of nine die-cuts of flowers and children such as one might find in a more common Victorian album. Each of the monthly floral die-cut leaves is accompanied by poetry entitled "The Legend of" whatever the particular flower is as well as a four-line stanza dedicated to the same month. The thirteenth leaf comes with a long poem called "Nature' Cathedral". Separate from all this are nine leaves of newspaper clippings and poetry. This latter part was done in the 1930s and 40s and thus a good half-century after the principal part of the album. We can date the die-cut portion to 1880, if not a little earlier, by an inscription dated 1880 on the FFEP. This section is an outstanding example of its genre -- the compiler had an overarching conception… Read More

Description:
Decorated Cloth. Very Good. N.d., circa 1900 to 1910. Color illustration on front cover of a Flemish or Norman village, framed by a blindstamped (and gilt impressed) image of a Jugendstil-style picture frame. Endpapers also of a high Art Nouveau pattern. About 40 leaves of card stock for the postcards. The slots into which the postcards are secured appear unused or very lightly used. There are no postcards in the album at present. A few slots have slight damage, but this doesn't necessarily suggest use. Age toning around the edges of the card leaves. Cocking to the binding. Soiling on the cloth binding, but overall, still a handsome Art Nouveau album.

Roma: Stamperia della Reverenda Camera Apost., 1695. First Edition presumed. Full Vellum. Very Good. Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC First Search or elsewhere. 8vo. 24 by 17 cm. Unpaginated. 98 leaves with content, printing only on rectos, 80 of these pages have engraved illustrations. Illustrations appear to be mounted cards, surrounded by inked ruled borders. The illustrations themselves measure 9.5 by 5.5 cm, and positioned in the upper right of the otherwise blank pages. The illustrations present historic highlights and milestones in chronological order, beginning with Augustus and as the title specifies, ending with Rudolf II, the Holy Roman Emperor between 1576 and 1612. The early illustrations are numismatic cameos in their appearance, with six to nine such images per card. By the end of the Roman era, there is one illustration per card, with a fairly detailed explanatory caption beneath. After many illustrations depicting human actors, the final illustrations tend to be of crowns, flags,… Read More
