Some soiling mainly in margins, pencil inscription in top margin; otherwise very good plus, a bright impression. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was considered the father of German mapmaking, and in 1715 was actually appointed the Geographer to the Emperor. Striking map of the Champagne region in France, with the towns of Compiegne, Menziere and Reims in the north to Sens, Troyes and Langres in the south. Description:
Small 8vo (6x3 3/4), modern half cloth and boards with original spine cloth and leather label, illustrated, 162pp. Some internal soiling and mild darkening, but very good overall. While the author mentioned on the title page is Solomon Bell, that name was a pseudonym for William Snelling. Snelling (1804-1848) was actually a frontiersman that followed his father out west and lived with the Dakota Indians, and became something of an expert on western Indian tribes. He even fought in a campaign against the Winnebago in 1827. When he returned east he did a lot of writing, and became a prominent reformer and social satirist. After recovering from a serious drinking problem, he became the editor for the Boston Herald the year before his death. This work is considered the first American juvenile book on the Trans Mississippi region. It appears likely that some of the material in this work was adapted from his book Tales of the Northwest, which was also published in 1830. This book is a charming little work… Read More

Description:
Original illustrated wrappers, tall 8vo (7 1/4 x 9 3/4), includes 12 full page illustrations in addition to wrapper illustrations. Notes and musical score on inside covers. Wrappers are chipped, and there are a cople of pieces missing from the top of the back cover, but don't appear to be affecting text. Spine is split but holding, thanks to tape spine; some minor soiling. The song 'Ten Little Niggers' emerged from the minstrel shows in the South shortly after the Civil War.These shows became increasingly racist as time went on. They were known as Jim Crow shows and then became coon shows. While 'Ten Little Niggers' would appear in Children's nursery rhyme books, there real purpose was to present blacks in demeaning ways.
